NOT a latte (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ladyludgate
This woman ordered an iced doppio in a venti cup with a splash of cream. I give her that. She says, “you need to fill it more! To the TOP.”

I say, “oh, okay - so a latte! :)”

she says “No. Actually. That’s NOT a latte. So FILL IT.” The light in my eyes dies as I remember that I’m not paid nearly enough to argue with this woman over 9 ounces of milk. Fill that baddie to the brim.

She is my mortal enemy.
blackclad_ 173 points 1y ago
i hate when people do this, you want it filled to the top? apply then! & see the shit we have to go through for stingy people like that. it’s always regulars too, like they’d save so much money just buying their own espresso machine & making their LATTES the way they want. because that literally is a latte. im not trying to complain about the job, i love it. i just dont understand why people think we know nothing because we get payed minimum wage & besides thats what they payed for.

I once saw a starbucks barista from god knows where come to our store and tell the new person to remake their drink multiple times. They said 'this texture is wrong, mine never looks like this' creating unimaginable stress for the poor green bean who wanted more than anything to be good at her new job. I was called over to help her out. The solution was to shake it up because the oatmilk had separated. Didnt even remake it just shook it up. I will die for my partners and am stunned when Im battling these customer/partner/karen mutant hybrids
rosegoldhiips 45 points 1y ago
So they can torture a green bean but not explain to them how they want the drink made? Other partners should be able to tell who's new and who's seasoned so this just infuriates me.
IfuDidntCome2Party 3 points 1y ago
Did you remind the green bean to shake her alt-milks, **before pouring**?

Separated milks are gross looking in a drink. Looks **spoiled** when chunky and you get chalky bits.🤮
LadyLechuga 18 points 1y ago
It doesn’t matter how much you shake the soy milk, if you’re at the end of the container, it’s getting soy chunks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
philosopher_cat_lady 8 points 1y ago
But then they wouldn't get to go on a power trip with a barista who obviously knows a hell of a lot more how to make lattes than she does
lattecat124 96 points 1y ago
oh idgaf if it says a splash theyre getting a splash especially if theyre rude about it. ill fill it to like the first line and then ice all the way so it looks like its filled to the top lol
ladyludgate [OP] 50 points 1y ago
DUUUDE I’m so with you. That’s what I did and she still went off on me lol. It was only two of us on the floor and a lobby full of people so I just did what I had to do to get her out of my sight lollll 😂
kobo15 26 points 1y ago
I tend to pack the cup with ice first and then put the milk after. To be thats the difference between “a doppio with cream” a latte, or at least how I can control it better
yeeterskeeteryall 8 points 1y ago
Lmaoooo this is what I do 👀
BaristaWoosa 73 points 1y ago
Me and my partners stuff that bad boy with ice so we can fill it “to the brim” 🤣 and as the ice settles when we had some liquid WE ADD MORE ICE 🤪
*petty gang*
CriticalSheep 24 points 1y ago
This is what I used to do. Fill the cup to the brim, pour shots over, add more ice and then splash the milk in.
lilpanita 2 points 1y ago
genuine question but i thought pouring shots over ice shocks the shot? my trainers were both coffee masters and they were unbelievably strict when it came to bar training so for iced espressos with cream i was told it was shots first, then ice and then cream? the only ‘exception’ to this was shaken drinks
LZARDKING 9 points 1y ago
This is how it’s supposed to be made so
ephemereaux 43 points 1y ago
I haven’t run out of steam yet so I’ll sit there and argue with people til I’m pulled away or they leave LOL
here_forthefun 4 points 1y ago
Same lol
tinysleepycryptid 39 points 1y ago
I always tell customers that their cup is not going to be full when they order shots over ice, it usually either makes them change their order to a latte or they confirm that thats actually what they want. We still get idiots but atleast im minimizing stress where I can
givemeapples 33 points 1y ago
I would have responded "No. Actually. That IS a latte. And I will have to charge you extra for the milk, as we charge for more than 4 ounces" and watch as they either snatch the drink and leave or give in 😉
throatsofgoats 18 points 1y ago
Exactly. If you try to pull this crap on me on bar I’m going to send you back to the register to pay for your latte, and if I’m on register I’m going to make it very clear that you’re only getting a splash. If you argue, I’m just going to shrug at you and be like “Them’s the breaks,” then move on to the next customer.

Like, in the grand scheme I don’t even care how much milk you get or how much you paid. But don’t treat me like I’m fucking stupid!
givemeapples 9 points 1y ago
Precisely. Some people might see us as petty but honestly I'm only doing it for the future baristas. By shutting down this kind of behavior now, it spares another barista in the future. If you keep entertaining their idiotic requests, they get comfortable and complacent and become even more entitled over time and start stretching their ask more and more. I honestly don't care about Starbucks as a corporation benefiting $0.70 more from you, their profit margins are not my agenda. I care about my fellow baristas, and their mental health, both present and future, and protecting them from abuse and harassment...
FfierceLaw 26 points 1y ago
Well now you’re the other Starbucks because we have been told by our SM NOT to fill it if someone just buys shots and he’s promised to back us up
LilacFlores 12 points 1y ago
Its not OPs fault though
[deleted] 10 points 1y ago
I’m saying! My last SM would back us up always but our new SM absolutely will not. It’s kinda out of our control unfortunately
philosopher_cat_lady 19 points 1y ago
Fuck that bitch. She gets four ounces. I don't care how much I'm paid. She doesn't get to force me to steal from the company I work for and give her the stolen milk. And she doesn't get to tell me what a fucking latte is. I don't get to steal from Starbucks. So she doesn't get to.
46patisse 3 points 1y ago
This times 1000
SaevioAvis 18 points 1y ago
I learned a fun fact when dealing with customers like that. The shot glasses we use for the macchiatos, holds about 5 shots right? Five shots = five ounces. Anything more than a shot glass full of milk, I charge for. I get being on a two man and not wanting to fight it, though. Just very much enjoy telling them I actually gave you more more than standard for this drink, if I have to remake it, I unfortunately have to charge for it.
laughingashley 13 points 1y ago
Maybe ask her what makes a drink a "latte," and try the whole exhausting "teaching moment" process to "help her order exactly what she wants in a way that she'll never be disjointed in its consistency." Or whatever. I bet she thinks cream vs milk. BET.
humiddefy 7 points 1y ago
She knows damn well it's a latte!
laughingashley 5 points 1y ago
I know, but sometimes making them explain it forces them to admit it
nioyakult 10 points 1y ago
clock in since you know so much🙄
hgfdv 8 points 1y ago
"She is my mortal ennemy."

I'd watch this movie...
cringeqween13 6 points 1y ago
Oh how nice it would be to set the cup on the counter and start pouring and keep pouring until milk is covering the counter
ladyludgate [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Writing this down for my last day lol. Pure petty energy. I love it
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
Look them dead in the eyes and just keep pouring.
TheFriendlyFeminist 6 points 1y ago
I would just be like “no problem, but next time we’re technically supposed to ring you up for a latte, because anything other than that isn’t supposed to get more than 4 oz of milk because of inventory purposes!”
-beam-me-up- 6 points 1y ago
Lol I like to overfill it ~~so when I put the lid on it spills~~
LeahMCopsey 5 points 1y ago
I would have gladly done it and charged her ass for it
TheOnesLeftBehind 5 points 1y ago
We are only allowed to give sample cups or half a shorts worth for free. Do that and tell them that that is all you can give them without charging, per company policy.
juliaandy99 3 points 1y ago
J would’ve remade it into a decaf so she could calm down. Girl you do not need the caffeine if you already have that much energy. Goodbye with you venti cold milk
BookDragon1996 3 points 1y ago
I have a partner that delt with a lady just like this and we will literally not give it to her and she'll let the lady call corporate. I was shaking cause of adrenaline and I generally shake and she was like I'm not mad at you honey you didn't do anything wrong and I'm like it's not that in my head I say go away. But yeah anything over 4oz is a latte
ayakowantsmemes 2 points 1y ago
I'm petty enough to do a refund and have them charged for the difference 😂 yeah I don't play with that manipulative bs I will not break standard just for you karen. Totally understand not having the energy to argue tho
ittybittybakerkitty 2 points 1y ago
I'd charge her for the extra
narviat 2 points 1y ago
let the shots die next time lmao
Due_Ad_6793 1 points 1y ago
Ok, so I literally put in the shots ,then ice, swirl it so that the ice melts a bit, add MORE ice and then cream to about the top indents. Looks full but is just a ton of ice. Cause FU.

What’s worse is when you give someone a latte because that’s what they ordered and they tell you it’s too milky and watered down they wanted light milk so you give them a new latte with less milk and they say you’re skimping them because the cups not full. Like if u want a stronger latte then pay for extra shots smh
Mooncat1999 1 points 1y ago
“cAn YoU fiLL iT tO tHe ToP?” ummmm no YOU can at yo house tho bish do it yoself 😤
TuraChi 1 points 1y ago
Today’s my last day and this man who 99% has dementia comes in ordering an “espresso macchiato in a tall whole milk whip. And make sure you got that, whip” and when I charge him as a latte macchiato not realizing thinking he just said the name wrong, he flips out. I changed the price to a single espresso shot so he could calm down because he was delirious and at the end of handoff he opens it fuming saying why is there whipped cream. I’m so glad I’m done

Commented this on another thread but yesterday was my last day at Starbucks and a woman ordered a venti dragon drink with no ice, but then ice on the side. So I gave her the measures our proportions of if I gave the drink a shake with the ice but I didn’t. So venti cup of ice, venti cup with the proper proportioned on the shaker cup, minus ice aka it doesn’t fill the cup. Woman grabbed it and went ‘oh are you guys not filling it to the top anymore?’ I just snorted and turned around and let my coworker deal with her, sorry I know it’s rude but it was my last day and we were understaffed during a sidewalk sale conducted by the city meaning we had a line out the door all day. I had assumed why she wanted ice on the side was so shaking it wouldn’t dilute the base and milk, making it watery quickly because our base isn’t refrigerated, it sits on our counters. Long story short I wasn’t annoyed at the girl for wanting free product, i honestly don’t care if you scam the siren, it’s a multi million dollar corporation, my store has an old mastreno meaning we can’t can’t pull odd number shots, aka we waste a lot of espresso! Free product is great cause hey at least someone is enjoying instead of it being thrown out. However, if you inconvenience me in order to get your free product, I don’t care I’m malicious compliancing that. I followed the ticket as policy states. (Another story I have from this past summer working at Starbucks had to do with me burning myself from malicious compliance and making an extra hot cappuccino too hot and accidentally tipping it on myself. Didn’t hurt myself too bad but helped expose a problem with allowing customers to order impossible things)

Literally dealt with this same exact thing x3 yesterday :)
xalaskarose 1 points 1y ago
I just ask them before “do you want it filled up to the top or not?” And if they say yes, then I just add the dairy charge. It’s still cheaper than a latte, so they normally don’t argue because hey, I asked beforehand!
Honey_girl_ 1 points 1y ago
I transferred to a new location and lots of the regulars order drinks like this. The partners here have let them get away with their BS mods for so long that I can’t even correct the customers on standard. This location apparently “has their own standards”

No. No. This is the worst barista complaint ever I’m so sick of hearing it. Watered down espresso and extra ice plus milk is not a *f**king* latte!! It’s extremely different and if I ordered an iced espresso with extra milk and someone made it as a latte I’d be pissed.
From a barista who has been very confused by this complaint for ten years. Just make the drink how they want it!

****BTW if you want to be petty about it that’s what the ADD DAIRY button on the milk page is for. But it’s a different build than a latte and needs to be rung up and treated as such.
