Did I do the right thing by calling out sick? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by No-Dimension-1035
Important background info: I work at a licensed store, have been for a couple months. Okay, so longish story, hope it’s not confusing- I got food poisoning and started vomiting late last night around midnight. My shift was supposed to start at 7:00 AM, we need to cancel at least 2 hours before a shift. I texted my manager immediately and waited for a response, but ended up falling asleep after getting sick again a couple times around 3 AM.

I woke up at 5:30 to a text for manager saying that she was off today (I should’ve known, I know, I know) and to call the store managers and tell them but that proper protocol is at least two hours notice. I called, the store manager said he’d take care of it but that there is always someone available to call at the store, basically no excuses. I am now worried about the consequences when I go back to work on Tuesday. I think it’s just a verbal warning, especially as this is the first time I’ve called out at all, but I’m truly regretting even calling out in the first place.

You did the right thing. If you’re throwing up you’re not supposed to come in, and you can’t call the store at midnight when no one is there. If they are upset with you, they are in the wrong

I could be wrong, but I believe the “calling out two hours before your shift” thing is like just a courtesy so they have more time to find coverage. I don’t think you can have any action taken against you over it. Also 100% yes you did the right thing calling out.
