Advice for applying (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by zixms
Hello! I’m 20 and in college, this’ll be my first job. I’m thinking of applying to the Starbucks across the street from my house, it has a drivethru and lately always seems a bit chaotic. Any tips for the application process? And if I get accepted, anything I should know?

Make sure to compare pay rates for other jobs in your area. I've seen stories of areas where Starbucks is \~$4 behind similar fast food jobs, because everyone is upping pay rates because of the labor shortage. Even if you really want to work at Starbucks, it can be a substantial difference.

You did note already that the store you're applying to seems a bit chaotic, but just emphasizing, Starbucks is not the cozy cafe job you think of a coffee shop as from movies, etc. New hires often take 3 months to feel comfortable, even if "Training" is 1-2 weeks.

You could probably say anything semi generic for the interview tbh. You love to work with a team, you love to learn new things, you love getting to talk and connect with other people (aka customers). Just make sure you're coming off put together, friendly, and approachable. Decent availability is good. When I was hired they wanted people who at least in theory were planning on working there at least a year or two - anything less wasn't worth the training time- but with the labor shortages I'm hearing of I doubt that's a criteria in many locations anymore.

Thank you so much for replying! I never knew about the wage thing that’s insane!

Yeah, I have no confirmation, and it's very likely location dependent. Starbucks used to be competitive to my knowledge, but every other post I see anymore is saying their closest McD's or Target is paying more. Starbucks /does/ have some good benefits. ASU, but since you're already in a college, you most likely won't be using that.. The food and drink markouts are nice, but also not the healthiest things. I can't speak for what competition offers. If you get insurance from parents you don't need to worry about the medical / dental / vision insurance either.

But in any case, definitely worth looking into.
