Imagine This (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Momo-ko_the_Fox
Imagine a world where customers tipped us instead of paying for the car behind them… Just a random thought that passes through my head every so often because a lot of customers that come to my store pay for the car behind them. Mrs. Cadillac back there can pay for her own drink.
thefoolwitch 116 points 1y ago
I had a guy give us $100 to pay it forward with and it’s like……. That’s a lovely sentiment dude but all of these people were fully prepared to pay for their drinks! Like idk feels like a waste of money compared to just… giving it to the workers who are making all of those drinks…
howdudo 65 points 1y ago
and then they beam at you like "but Im really great right? arent I really great?" and u just deadpan expression reply "okay you got everything you need? bye"
capsule_of_anxiety1 24 points 1y ago
Dead ass, like they want you to praise them for being such a kind person. Like fuck outta here and leave my window lol
dorybunz 49 points 1y ago
whenever people hand me cash to pay it forward, im tempted to just put it in our tip jar and not tell anyone lol
capsule_of_anxiety1 22 points 1y ago
Done that once or twice 🤫
fookyall 17 points 1y ago
I 100% would tbh! That’s a way of paying it forward too right? A random act of kindness is $100 tip too so 🤷🏼‍♀️
LZARDKING 10 points 1y ago
Last time someone did this I bought myself a new cup and Madelines and gum ☺️☺️ and some of my coworkers were like ugh it’s for the customers and I was like “you wanna see how many stars I have I’m a REGULAR this applies to me too” didn’t and don’t and won’t feel guilty and I love my cup❤️
liquidcoffee110 5 points 1y ago
I'm only mad that I didnt think of it
katieo1122 2 points 1y ago
You're my hero haha ❤️
Hola_soymilk 2 points 1y ago
uh oh
LZARDKING 1 points 1y ago
What?
throatsofgoats 71 points 1y ago
Exactly. Like what do you think you’re accomplishing by paying for a $6 drink that someone was in line and prepared to pay for anyway? Meanwhile me & some of my fellow baristas are wondering how we’re going to get hot meals now that they’re cutting food markouts on our days off.
GreyGreyson 14 points 1y ago
They say we can still get all 7 food mark outs you just have to do it on your days on, go with this information and make their pockets hurt!
ClassicListen 10 points 1y ago
It’s still a nice gesture and they mean well by it even if it’s annoying. They probably don’t realize how irritating it can be for person at the window. I’d rather direct anger at someone other than people who do this.
coldcatsoup 67 points 1y ago
I think about it every single time they wanna "pay it forward"

I always wanna say, "You know ten years ago we used to get great tips, but now because of this 'wanna do good for another' we suffer."

TIP your Barista, TIP anyone in a service industry that requires or takes tips.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 16 points 1y ago
For this very reason, I always carry at LEAST ten $1 bills in my bag at any given time. That way, if I get something from somewhere, I can tip the server.
coldcatsoup 9 points 1y ago
I do the exact same. I remember while being a Barista in school. I would bring home anywhere from $ 80-$120 every week. Now I'm happy if I get an even $20. It was how I survived while in school. It's still nice to get that little extra and there are still a lot of great people who tip to show their appreciation.

Short story if you wanna read it: I was working bar (espresso machine) on the floor by myself as it was probably 5:45, we open at 5:30. A young girl maybe 18-20 comes in to pick up a mobile order and immediately hands me $20. To say I was amazed is an understatement. It was really nice of her.
A_Will_Ferrell_Cat 14 points 1y ago
So maybe it's not the most ethical... but someone here once suggested to tell the next car "your order is taken care of have a wonderful day!" Or something similar instead.... works like a charm plus they'll usually tip US for their comped order and no chain starts!

I feel no shame for doing this. It gets confusing with the larger chains and keeping track of orders...
coldcatsoup 6 points 1y ago
A\_Will\_Ferrell\_Cat

Absolutely genius! I have always tried to think of something to say to maybe bring tips in.

This is simple and perfect. I don't care if it's ethical or not haha. I will remember this.

\+ it definitely does get confusing trying to make sure we don't mix orders up. Especially with all of the green beans still training and getting the feel of being a Barista.
deeciphered 48 points 1y ago
We had a guy come through our drive thru and ask how much the order behind us was and we told him and he was like "that's not bad. They can pay for their drink. Besides you guys are doing all the work." And he gave us a $20.
LegendOfJakelope 27 points 1y ago
You love to see it.

My store had one of our regulars go around and give each of us, individually, a five dollar bill. She was very insistent, "I see y'all in here every day, working hard. That's for you! Don't put it in the tip jar, that's for each of you!"

She didn't realize someone was in the back when she was handing them out, so she ran back to her car and got another five for him as well. Bless that woman.
LZARDKING 2 points 1y ago
That’s the way
sofso 20 points 1y ago
Literally think about this every time I'm in the middle of trying to sort out one of those pay-it-forward lines and the customers are willing to shill out $20+ for the orders behind them. Like, dang, y'all have that much to spare and can't toss a couple dollars our way too?
narviat 17 points 1y ago
I'd just tell them the next car is a mobile order
capsule_of_anxiety1 5 points 1y ago
Same 😂
hailvy 4 points 1y ago
Customers in my area would go ‘nevermind then’ and keep the money they were about to spend
narviat 6 points 1y ago
I'll take that over a chain of "pay for the guy behind" since it fucks up drive thru times (not that i care) and the orders on the screen stop matching up with the people in the window and that's where I get frustrated
hailvy 3 points 1y ago
And the ppl that don’t understand and insist on paying for their own stuff
narviat 3 points 1y ago
ugh, it's like "it's paid for, go away"
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 3 points 1y ago
People in my area would be like “well how much is the car behind _them_ then?” Ugh!
Sirmarchboy22 11 points 1y ago
Tbh management at our store always did put it in the tip jar. Like if it's the person behind them, fine. If it's a hundred bill with 'pay it forward' it always hurt drive times so much more then it needed too so we used it for tips.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah but people at my store almost always pay with the app or a credit/debit card.
SyerenGM 10 points 1y ago
I agree it is a dumb practice.. just a way for starbucks to still get money by making people feel good but also not supporting their own staff.
mrhammerant 8 points 1y ago
I am now even more grateful for the guy who comes in and throws a $20 into our tip jar every week just because. Oh, and he's a total sweetheart and knows most of us by name. He's just too pure for this world.
ricsanc 7 points 1y ago
I'll never forget when this super nice dude paid for 3 cars back. I told the last person that they had been paid for and they were so fuckin ungrateful. She rolled her eyes and said "must be nice having so much money."

I didn't know how to tell her the guy paying for everyone was in an 30 year old, rusted out truck and extremely worn clothes while she whined about being paid for.

Anyways, I hate pay it forward chains
ElectricPsychopomp 1 points 1y ago
sad :(
LZARDKING 4 points 1y ago
I’ve had multiple times where someone has left a like $500 gift card to pay for everyone for the night or morning and I’m just like…these people were already budgeting this coffee trip into their day…my gas tank has 30¢ worth of gas in it and I have holes in my shoes but sure. Make sure the rich people around here get a free latte. And one time it was a pastor????? And I mean this was a RICH neighborhood (that I commuted 45 minutes to) and I was just like ??????? SO confused!!! All that free money!!! For rich people!! This was like 6 years ago and I’m STILL pissed off. Wrecked our tips for the night too because no one had change to put in the jar! And of course the bastard didn’t tip and left looking so proud of himself.
mcr0414 4 points 1y ago
I have been saying this for the 8 years I have worked here. The person can pay behind you. We worked thru a pandemic. :)
paladin-miraak 4 points 1y ago
I’m like maybe a month in to working here and I HATE when people start those chains in the drive thru. It gets super confusing super quickly and it’s also just awkward for the customers who don’t want to continue it.
Able_Ad2652 3 points 1y ago
People at my work only do the pay it forward because they get pissed someone else got their points, so they take the person’s points behind them. I seriously watch this people get angry angry about it.
Snuggly_Chopin 3 points 1y ago
How do you guys get the in-app tips? I’ve done it a few times when I don’t have cash and I always worry it goes to some Starbucks abyss.
liquidcoffee110 2 points 1y ago
It gets dolled out to us in our paychecks! Cash is of course preferable to any person who receives tips because taxes and whatnot but the sentiment is always appreciated so thank you!
Snuggly_Chopin 2 points 1y ago
You’re welcome! You guys deserve ALL the tips!
SisterAndromeda2007 3 points 1y ago
Paying it forward is just a flex.
Razza_ma_tazza 3 points 1y ago
One time I got a drink paid forward and I just thought it was good karma. But usually that makes me tip the money I was going to spend so. Different strokes different folks
chinfox 3 points 1y ago
“sorry! they mobile ordered 😭” and onto the next car
Sirmarchboy22 2 points 1y ago
I wish the app stopped hiding the tipping option. It's kinda frustrating
ElectricPsychopomp 1 points 1y ago
rhey probably turn off notifications. My tip reminder pops up anytime my husband or I use the app (same account.)
Sirmarchboy22 2 points 1y ago
Well, working at a high paced drive through, at least 60 percent of my customers started to complain about the notif nolonger appearing after an update. And then tbh, mine doesn't doesn't appear till 4 hours later, and ill buy at least one pastry a day.
ElectricPsychopomp 2 points 1y ago
that makes sense. my husband and I have been curbing a lot of calories lately so if it's relatively recent that makes sense. that blows. I'm sorry :/
