What to do while waiting to give someone their order?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Artsybbb
So I’ve been hired at this Starbucks and I’ve literally only been there for about 5 days now. 3/5 of those days I’ve been handing out orders through the drive thru window, it’s the only thing I’m efficient at since those mf’ers act like they don’t want to train me on anything else. Majority of the time after I ring them up, I’m just standing there… literally just waiting for their drinks or food items to be made and sometimes it takes a while. I hate it, it’s boring and it makes me look awkward but I have no idea what to do 😬 What can I do to make myself look busy? And please 🤦🏽♀️ don’t say to spark up a conversation with customers, I try 😩 it’s just so awkward

Respectfully, your job is to connect with the customer. Making yourself look busy takes away from the customer experience and makes them feel unattended too. It takes practice for sure and hard to ease in to but easy topics like weekend plans holiday plans and occupations are a simple questions to ask as well as compliments on their outfit, hair, nails, etc. unfortunately during busy times it is the best place to put someone new. Maybe talk to your shift about asking for more bar time during slower hours for practice so they know you’re interested

If you're making backups while on drive you can connect with the customers through that. For example, "Did you know we make our whipped cream in house? I had no idea until I started working here". It engages the customer and allows you to work on backups. Plus, I've found that people actually find it really interesting.

Usually what I do (I get stuck on window a lot too):
1. Conversation. I know you said don't say this, but it is part of the job, AND I have a tip! Come prepared with 2-3 conversation sentances. A few of mine: a. "Where are you heading to today?" b. "I saw you ordered XYZ. Do you like that?" c. "How's it going today?" After I ask one or two of those, I use the line "Let me check on those items for you." and shut the window.
2. Inform. Let your partners know which items you're waiting on so they can prioritize those.
3. Refreshers. Refreshers in my store are right by the window, so I'll work on those if I see there are some in the cue. It's out of my other partners' way and allows me to help them get ahead.
4. Check on warming. Go walk down to warming and offer to bring the food up to the window or the Mobile Order stand.
5. Preparing for drinks. Get straws cued up. Get drink carriers if you see you'll need one. Get napkins ready for food. Put stoppers and sleeves on cups if the drinks are coming to you out of order. Make your job easier later.
6. Cleaning. Wipe down surfaces near where you are or tabletops not in other partners' way.
This is how I do it, at least. I've been complimented on my customer service, and I think it's because I give myself 20 seconds of preplanned conversation and then give myself permission to step away as soon as it gets awkward. Hope that helps!

Customer connection as per the other comment but you can also check around hot and cold bar and take care of restock duties if there's no one else taking care of it already
