If you get a doctors note I’m 99% sure you can still wear it on the floor. I remember discussing with an old partner that had the same concerns
esaeklsg47 points1y ago
So at least in my area it’s a food safety rule (something about washing hands) to not have anything on your wrist. I don’t know that’s technicaaaaally overridden by a doctor’s note, but I do know a barista with a similar situation, and everyone let him wear it. I had a doctors note to let me wear a wrist brace because work was giving me repetative motion injuries and my DM eventually saw it and would not allow it. So YMMV.
Once upon a time I saw heart rate monitors that go around your chest, but idk how comfortable those would be with a binder, or what kind if read-interfaces are available. Or what the price points are. But might be worth looking into.
esaeklsg32 points1y ago
Alternative option, thinking of how I handled this situation, suddenly acquire shirts with sleeves longer than where your apple watch sits. And then forget to ever take off the apple watch.
rio8envy75 points1y ago
I would be afraid all the washing of hands and how messy things get destroying my watch or getting it sticky.
esaeklsg11 points1y ago
Apple watches are designed to be water-resistant (not waterproof, but you don't have to worry in the rain, etc) I wear mine at home doing dishes, etc, without worry. It's also easy to nudge it an inch or two up your arm. It's still a valid concern, esp around all the starbucks sugar syrups spraying, but for a medical reason it's probably worth it. I could see buying several cheap off-brand bands to wear so you can change it if you spill something, but I don't know if it'd damage the actual watch.
melodiic_11 points1y ago
you're right, it is a food safety violation to have jewelry or watches on your wrist at work! but here's how i see it: if the barista comes to you because they have to wear a heart rate monitor on their wrist or they have a medical bracelet they are required to wear at all times, that very likely falls under a reasonable accommodation under the ADA, as long as they are able to bring in a doctor's note that says it's medically necessary
esaeklsg2 points1y ago
"Very likely" does not mean "does" and also does not mean "will be allowed without a complete hassle." Whether or not I agree with any position on this, it was a problem with one DM at the time (and never escalated because no one at the store-level cared so...) and I was told someone asked PRC/PCC/Whatever on the wrist brace subject at some point (which I would consider same argument) and they said it was not allowed.
If someone wants to escalate / have that fight I wish them the best. For a heart monitor case I wonder if they'd just get told they need to wear a version that goes around your chest or an ankle version or something- I don't know if they specifically would have to accommodate a wrist monitor.
use-that4 points1y ago
The ADA requires reasonable accommodations which can mean a lot of things but typically means compromise. from my experience with the ADA i agree that the most likely outcome would be telling the disabled person to wear a different form of monitor like a chest monitor instead of a wrist monitor, because that allows the ADA to both meet the accommodations and needs of the person (being able to track their heart rate) & the need for general food safety (bare wrists and hands). I have no idea what the ADA would do in the case of something that can’t be moved off the wrist like a required wrist brace though.
I’m not really planning to bring this to the ADA really or seek an exemption for the wristwatch rule because it’s easiest and safest for me to just wear it somewhere else, but that’s how I’d imagine it would go if I did!
lewabwee1 points1y ago
I’m not saying this is a good thing but the ADA is much less likely to be enforced than food code is.
kqs1325 points1y ago
You can wear it on your ankle! That's what I do, and that way you can still get your heart rate. I know its harder to see with it there, but it works. It's a food safety standard to not have anything on your wrists so that's why unfortunately! You could also try to get a doctor's note.
use-that7 points1y ago
I’m gonna try out wearing it on my ankle and in my binder and see what works better, I wear boots and have large calves so I’m not sure it’ll fit around my leg haha. Thank you!!
kqs139 points1y ago
I have large calves too! I found a band for my watch that is a scrunchie (target or amazon has them), and it was stretchy so it was able to fit!
use-that3 points1y ago
So I just got back home and tried fitting it around my ankle with my boots on, it’s a super snug fit but I can secure it without needing to change my straps since my straps are already pretty large. I’m not sure if i’ll end up putting it on my ankle or my upper arm most often- I feel like upper arm would be easiest to see and check frequently since with it on my ankle or in my binder I need to pull out my phone to check it with the Health app. Thank you for your suggestion!!
depressoroast24 points1y ago
Get a doctors note, and ask your manager if they can file an accommodation. You have to have an accommodation. Not trying to be mean or aggressive but, do you things have to be documented in case anyone tries to retaliate or call you out or whatever. Protect yourself you have a documented and ask for an accommodation that’s filed through the PRSC.
use-that5 points1y ago
Thanks! Once I’m eligible for health insurance thru starbucks I will see about getting a note
tumnasty15 points1y ago
You can also get a elastic strap and slide it up your arm under your sleeve 👍
Sarahthelizard2 points1y ago
Yeah there's chest versions, strap versions, sooo if ya really need it OP...
But there are legitimate reasons for not wearing a watch on the floor.
use-that7 points1y ago
Oh don’t get me wrong, I totally know why we can’t wear a watch on the floor and as soon as my manager pointed it out to me I removed it and put it in my pocket right away. That’s why I’m looking more into alternative ways to wear it rather than an exemption that allows me to wear it on my wrists. Today I kept it in my binder and it did okay, I’m gonna bounce around the next couple days to figure out if my binder, my ankle, or my upper arm works the best for me and gives me the most consistent & comfortable readings
ElijahLordoftheWoods-1 points1y ago
The ADA supersedes health code here.
xenfoes4 points1y ago
Incorrect! They work hand and hand, but typically health code is above ADA even though they’re both at the federal level. For example, people who use service dogs at a pool still cannot have the dog in the water because it’s a health violation. And people who use service dogs in grocery stores cannot place them in the cart because food also touches the cart and it’s a health violation. This is what “reasonable accommodation” is. And with work, the restrictions are even tighter. Source, I have a family member who is blind and uses a service dog.

Like others are saying, get a doctor's note and most likely , you'll be fine. The whole no watches, nails, rings with engravings or diamonds thing is not actually a food safety policy in most states. It's just a Starbucks thing.

"In most states." I wasn't talking about Canada.
Edit: thanks for the downvote, hun
Pylon-Cam5 points1y ago
At stores where they enforce the no watch rule, I’ve seen partners buy an arm band and wear it on their upper arm.
GlorisSkates5 points1y ago
Sounds like POTS. I struggled not wearing my watch some days, but I knew if I started feeling bad to hydrate and sit down.
use-that4 points1y ago
I’ve been told dozens of times that I should look into POTS. I’ve been out of health insurance & unable to be seen by a doc for years now so once I’m eligible for insurance benefits thru Starbucks I’m definitely taking the opportunity to see someone about POTS specifically and checking in on my heart in general as almost everyone in my immediate family has some kind of serious heart condition (thanks genetics /s)
kitsustar173 points1y ago
As someone who was just recently diagnosed with POTS, I would suggest finding a heart rhythm specialist (once you’re eligible for insurance of course). I was bounced around 3 cardiologists before the last one thought of POTS and referred me to a heart rhythm specialist. One tilt table test verified POTS and I’m on meds that help so much.
alphonse11215 points1y ago
Are you able to tell when your heart rate spikes by the way you feel? Maybe you could keep the watch on you and if you’re feeling like you need to check the heart rate you could put it on and check. I know it’s a food safety issue but your health is more important than any job so maybe if you explain to the manager you have a health condition that requires monitoring they may allow you to bring a doctors note or something. Maybe they’d allow you to wear a glove over your hand and wrist??
esaeklsg3 points1y ago
Gloves aren't technically a fix for the handwashing issue, as you're still required to wash your hands properly before putting on / taking off gloves. Whether a SS/SM/DM thinks about that rule is up in the air. But I'd say be prepared for that to be no'd if the watch is no'd for handwashing reasons.
alphonse11211 points1y ago
Ah I see. Don’t they have to make some kind of accommodation for someone with a health issue though?? Also OP I wonder if you can track your HR if you wore the Apple Watch on your ankle?
use-that3 points1y ago
If there’s no working alternative way to wear it I’ll see if my manager will let me do the gloves! Thank you. And yes I can tell, I feel weak/dizzy and lightheaded and in the worst scenario I will pass out lol
theshortbarista4 points1y ago
I have the same thing and it is a food safety violation for having it on your wrist. But I found an arm strap that is like a bigger version of the wrist straps for Apple Watch on Amazon just type in “Apple Watch arm band” and I just wear it on my arm. Still super accurate and within code. Hope that helps!
use-that3 points1y ago
Thanks!! This is similar to what a lot of people have recommended, I am planning to try a few different places to wear it since my straps are big enough to fit around my ankle and my upper arms and I’ll just have to see which spot is the most comfortable.
ElijahLordoftheWoods2 points1y ago
If you request reasonable accommodations that would supersede the no watches rule. You’ll have to get documentation from your doctor and submit this form:
https://sbpcc.custhelp.com/app/ACCOM
theshortbarista1 points1y ago
I already tried to do that. Went through my dr and paperwork and everything but food safety overruled it. So I can have it on my arm but not wrist
ElijahLordoftheWoods1 points1y ago
Did corporate say that or your manager? Cuz SMS overstep their bounds on this kind of thing a lot.
theshortbarista2 points1y ago
Sedgwick did. I had to make accommodation requests and they had me do it through Sedgwick and Sedgwick denied the watch being able to be on my wrist due to food safety.

use-that2 points1y ago
Oh I’m very much aware of why this is a violation of food safety- I’m not wearing anything on my wrists at work now and I’m moving my watch to my upper arm where it can be tucked into my shirt sleeve, don’t worry!

I had a partner who was diabetic and he needed to wear a watch to track time more easily so he could track his eating / drinking. 100% you can get a medical exemption
Chemical-Less3 points1y ago
Just tell them you have it on for medical reasons (and you can explain why if you feel comfortable with it, but I don't think you're required to), they might ask for a doctor's note, but I think that's about it ! Best of luck
use-that2 points1y ago
thank you!! I did explain to my manager about why I was wearing it when i took it off and she seemed understanding, she already knows I am disabled in other ways than my heart bc I disclosed that in my interview and has been pretty okay about it so far. I know it’s a food safety thing having it on your wrist so I’m gonna be seeing if my chest, upper arm, or ankle works best for me instead- that way I’m in dress code but still get my heart rate data saved for my time on the floor!
mechagothicsalmon2 points1y ago
One of my partners wears a medical bracelet and it’s never caused any issue. I’m sure a doctor’s note would help your case but you should be fine as long as you say it’s for a health condition!
CapriSunEnema2 points1y ago
My manager doesn't have a problem with me wearing my Garmin watch, as long as I take it off when we have inspections. I think it depends on how flexible your manager is.
That being said, it's technically a health code thing. You could wear a chest strap heart rate monitor. I have a Garmin one for runs and bike rides and i really don't notice it. I put the strap on and it fits snug Unger the band of my sports bra, that is definitely an option and they have been shown to be more accurate.
use-that2 points1y ago
This specific manager is nice but is very strict on company policy. I don’t think any of my other managers or shift leads would care, but I also don’t think it’s a huge deal for me to keep it on my wrist since it’s definitely viable to wear it elsewhere haha. Is the garmin monitor expensive? My watch was a hand-me-down from a family member who got the newer version, and I can’t really afford an expensive monitor. Thanks for the suggestion, I’m interested in the higher accuracy for sure :)
CapriSunEnema3 points1y ago
They can be a little pricey, it looks like the Garmin brand are $100 to $130 ish range. However, i honestly don't know if Garmin is the best brand, İ mean İ use them for most of my exercise gadgets. i suggest maybe doing some research on chest monitors and the. Looking on ebay for a deal. For example, right of the bat i see a Garmin chest monitor in ebay for $45. I know generally chest monitors run in at least the $100 range and up, but you can either find a deal on ebay or make a lower offer for something that is listed.
If you do some research you will find a lot of running and exercise related article that talk about why chest straps are more accurate, i can't remember the details now. All i really know is that watches use pulsating lights to gather heat rate data and more chest straps don't. That coupled with the fact that chest straps sit closer to your heart makes them more accurate.
Happy to be of help!
imhereforthegossip892 points1y ago
The Apple Watch is pretty great and I use it too for both health and exercise purposes. However, it’s not very accurate when it comes to measuring heart beats. The chest strap is actually pretty great for that and you can connect it to your phone via Bluetooth to monitor your heart. It’s also pretty comfortable and rather cheap. You can find a good quality strap for 20-30 dollars on Amazon. When I do more intense exercises, such as riding the bike, I use the chest strap to measure which zone my heart rate is at.
use-that1 points1y ago
Another commenter mentioned that they use a Garmin chest strap for measuring heart rate during exercise bc it’s more accurate, so I may wind up just buying one of those somewhere down the line when I have some more money available. Right now though my watch or taking my pulse manually are my only ways to measure my heart rate. I’m going to try wearing my watch around my ankle/upper arms instead of the wrist for now
rio8envy72 points1y ago
Maybe an anklet? They make Velcro pouches that you can put Apple Watch and stuff in. I used it all the time for my Fitbit. Does your manager know about your condition?
use-that1 points1y ago
I’m thinking of wearing it just strapped around my ankle with the regular straps used for the wrist, it needs good skin contact to be able to measure my heart rate so I’m not sure putting it in a pouch would work unless it was a tight pouch with a cut out back window for the sensor. My manager is aware of my heart problems but I have had no health insurance for a while now so I don’t know exactly what is going on, I just know my symptoms & have an idea of what it might be, so I’ve just quickly relayed my general symptoms to her and explained that sometimes I may need to sit down for a second in case I feel like I may faint. She seems like she gets it & made a joke about it with me haha
rio8envy72 points1y ago
The arm strap is a good idea just make sure you’re able to find one that fits and doesn’t cut off circulation. I tried with my Fitbit and it just didn’t work but Apple may have better/sturdier straps than the knock offs I bought. I actually have another idea. There is this silicone holder I used to have for my Fitbit that stayed together via a magnet and kept it on my bra strap. I would see if you can find one for an Apple Watch. The silicone would probably be thin enough to get an accurate reading and you can keep it hidden on the inside of your shirt.
I’m glad your manager seems to understand your situation. I would suggest talking to partner services about getting an accommodation. I figure it’s worth a shot.
AdministrativePen9811 points1y ago
Get a note from your doctor, email it to accommodations department, and send copy to your SM. I did almost a year and a half ago, and am able to wear on my wrist, due to ongoing health issues. This was if health department comes, your SM has it on file you’re exempt.
chiile-anyways_uhm1 points1y ago
I would suggest getting a bigger band and putting it higher up on your arm. Ask your manager if this could be acceptable since it won’t be on your wrist / near your hands
Kailikesplants1 points1y ago
A lot of people at my store when I worked at Starbucks wore it around their biceps or ankle
mcr04141 points1y ago
Doctors note and being excuse thru pcc. Call pcc. They will work with you and tell you everything cause Reddit isn’t as reliable and pcc will tell you exactly what to do. Xox
AndrewtheRey1 points1y ago
I’m a former barista. Is this a new rule? Nobody ever said anything about me wearing my Apple Watch.
use-that1 points1y ago
I have no idea how long it’s been in the dress code but apparently it’s just not enforced very much. My manager is strict about rules so that’s why she said something to me specifically.
mls913141 points1y ago
You can call and ask for an accommodation.
tired-barista1 points1y ago
i work at a starbies and at a grocery store, and one of the best things i have discovered are watch armbands! i keep it higher up on my forearm so it isn't a violation but i can still see my heart rate or if it gives a heart rate warning
capsule_of_anxiety1-10 points1y ago
You could always loop it around your apron, where you’d put it around your neck :)
Notlikeothercatmoms7 points1y ago
This tracks steps but not heart rate unfortunately
darkwolf5233 points1y ago
That doesn’t work like that
ElijahLordoftheWoods1 points1y ago
A heart rate monitor has to be touching the skin tho so no
