Bean hoppers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Emotional_Laugh_322
How do you all actually clean your bean hoppers? Some people have been wiping them down with water, others rinsing them in sanitizer or wiping them down with a “bar towel” wet with sanitizer.

We have the masterna ones and we throw them in the dishwasher...?

We aren’t allowed to because “it gets too hot and will break the plastic” but a shift today said the sanitizer needs to be wiped dry off the hopper or it’ll affect the flavor of the beans. Even though they’re dry by the time beans get put back in them…and I’m not buying that excuse.

If your dishwasher gets hot enough to break plastic, you need a new dishwasher. Also, you can just let it cool down before you put it back so it doesn't warp? I don't understand logic lol

I don't buy that excuse either! Sanitizer doesn't change any taste whatsoever, except maybe makes it tastes better since it's the final step in the wash cycle? Your shift is weird.

You’re wrong! Check the equipment manual, any of our thin brittle plastics shouldn’t be put in the Hobart because of warping and cracking.

Ours does just fine? I don't do it. I hand wash it. I was just stating that the only time I've seen it warp was when my dishwasher decided to only work at 200+ degrees and then die. That was a fun time, waiting for a new hopper.

I don’t recommend putting mastrena parts in the Hobart. They might break/warp. Hoppers technically are only supposed to be done once a week, during clean play. Hand wash, and sanitize.

We haven’t had a clean play in….a since right after the remodel in early summer. Our manager does insist on cleaning them out every night, not just emptying the beans.

I’m also only at this store for two more days before moving states so it won’t be anything I have deal with for much longer.

You can take them to the back and hand wash them in the sink, but do notttttt out them in the big sanitizer- it's not standard and gets too hot for them. It also works to wipe them down with a clean sanitizing rag and go over it again with a dry rag to get it streak free.
