I would like this to stop, but it probably won’t.(self.starbucksbaristas)

I’ve had three customers this week “thank” us for “actually showing up and working” and try and chat with us about how the government should cut off unemployment so people can get back to work darn it! And god, I just wish I could tell them what I really think straight to your face. If customers actually appreciated the people who provide them services they’d understand WHY people aren’t willing to put up with low pay and absolute dog shit treatment and want that to, like change????

Also my coworkers who agree with them (like actually agree wholeheartedly and not just entertaining them for the sake of an easy interaction) who say “Oh I suck it up and work and I don’t complain, I’m fine” - girl, you radiate pure misery. We are not okay.

That does bug me. If someone takes out a million dollar life insurance policy and dies a year later, paying a mere fraction into the company by way of premiums, no-one speaks ill of the beneficiaries taking the million. Contracted promise paid into, just like unemployment insurance. People need to stop vilifying those that choose to take what they are promised. As a stay at home mom since before the pandemic, I of course didn't qualify, and going back to work now is a shit show. Other than my 4 year job gap, my resume should have me earning decent hourly, and everyone is hiring. Problem is, everything I browsed on Indeed is handing out poverty wages.

The only person who would say something like this \[the government should stop paying unemployment\] is someone who literally doesn't care about people.

> I personally know at least two people who went on unemployment and made absolutely zero effort (and openly so) to look for any kind of work starting from March 2020 all the way through now. Instead, the money was used for vacationing and hotels.
So what? It's their money to be stupid with. I know so many more people that are actually using the unemployment money how it should.
ElectricPsychopomp2 points1y ago
not to mention that money was to keep the economy afloat. the government doesn't really care about people as single entities. They care about what those single entities do in relation to the economy. Poor people spend their money. Well off people save it. Spending it is better for the economy because it keeps it moving a lot faster than parking it in a .3% interest savings account.

If people stopped spending money, the economy would die. More stores and manufacturing would close, more people losing jobs, it would snowball so badly. Regardless of what that money is spent on, it needs to keep circulating. Of course it could have been better regulated but it's the same as anything... A few will make everyone look bad.

I was so excited to go back go work after 4 years as a stay at home mom. I'm only 2 weeks into working for Starbucks now and seriously rethinking my decision. It hurts to hear people say - what they think is supportive, "thank you for showing up today."
kell031329 points1y ago
I feel the same as when they say “thank you for being open today” on holidays. like you don’t think I’d rather be home with my family???
SyerenGM1 points1y ago
I understand but I will also play devils advocate here, as many times I have seen baristas on this page put in a picture with a sign for people to be thankful for the people who actually showed up today or during pandemic. You can't fault the customers trying to be caring, thankful, and courteous. Fault the company for making it more stressful than it needs to be.
Random-Brunette1 points1y ago
I know they mean well so I shake it off. I wasn't prepared to hear that so the emotions that came with were unexpected.
philosopher_cat_lady14 points1y ago
Ugh. We're not working because we want to, asshole. I don't want to catch COVID from your stupid maskless self. Starbucks literally took away my right to refuse service to you. Go fuck yourself. Hard.
Today a barista from another store who was working at ours joked about how he wanted to quit the other day. I said, "We've all wanted to quit." That's just the reality of working at Starbucks at the moment. I had to go to Walmart this morning at 6:00 a.m. (apparently, that's when they open) to buy whole milk, 2% milk, and nonfat milk. We literally had one gallon of nonfat milk, and that was it.

I like to tell them that no, we’re not understaffed, it’s just taking a minute because there are literally 40 people in the cafe and the drive through line is into the street. Why they chose to join that line is not my problem. (We are a little bit understaffed but fuck them)
Random-Brunette5 points1y ago
Omg, and mobile orders? The invisible evil of orders for people not even there yet.. Ugh.
clumsycalico3 points1y ago
Oh my god. Oh my god. Mobile orders were my personal hell today. Today we WERE extremely understaffed because of call outs and miscommunication, and I had a whole lobby full of people staring at me calling out mobile order after mobile order. It was the worst thing ever.
Our bigger problem than being understaffed right now is just that we have literally been 4x as busy as we used to be just kind of out of no where since like August and it hasn’t stopped since. We had orders going from the moment we opened at 4:30am and that was just not normal for us before, we would at least have time to get things set up in the morning and not have our entire site literally flooded with people from 5am until close. I have no idea what the heck is going on with all these people but I need them to stop!!!
Random-Brunette4 points1y ago
The nation is under extra stress, I wonder if more people are "self-caring" and treating themselves to little extras (such as an expensive coffee drink) these days. Too bad it's at the baristas' expense.
You'd think the technology exists to have the computer program regulate how many orders can go through at any given time. The app should be able to suggest a less busy location maybe jus 5 minutes out of the way, or say "mobile traffic is very high and you may wait longer than someone who orders in person." Anything, really.
cyan_reynolds4 points1y ago
You guys aren't understaffed? Do you work in the heaven branch?
clumsycalico3 points1y ago
Haha well, we kind of are, just not as bad as everywhere else. And also, when they ask, their shit is taking a long time just because of the volume of orders and amount of equipment we have. Having extra people won’t help the fact that we only have 2 ovens and 2 blenders and this jackass ordered 8 sandwiches and 8 fraps lmao.
I’m really lucky to be at a store with awesome partners though, most of whom have been there for a very long time. I kinda do work at the heaven branch in comparison to a others, which is why I’m going to commute 20 minutes there after moving instead of transferring to the one across the street lol

We have plenty of people on staff, it's just that corporate will only allow managers to schedule skeleton crews. Sales are up, but somehow we never "earn labor". I don't know a single person who quit so that they can collect government checks. Don't blame the working class, it's corporate greed that's the real problem here.
lewabwee3 points1y ago
If the minimum wage rose alongside inflation and the cost of living then this whole unemployment thing wouldn’t be a problem.
And yeah I like nice customers but I don’t want to be thanked for showing up for less than desirable pay, especially if they understand that pay to be less than desirable.
ElectricPsychopomp1 points1y ago
"It's not a labor shortage. It's a wage shortage."
or
"customers have gotten so much more abusive since the start of the pandemic, I don't blame people for cutting their living expenses so they don't have to deal with toxic workplaces."
They'll probably just nod their heads, absorb *none of what you said* and move on to wait for their drink.
heathermj101 points1y ago
i’m so over comments like these I actually do tell them lol, I tell them how short we are and how tired I am, so I don’t blame people for not wanting to slave away to a corporation lol i’ve also told my management that they don’t pay me enough for my rent (thankfully my bf and I are able to pay it together) so no wonder they have a hard time hiring people, they usually don’t respond 😂😂

I agree with both. People sitting on unemployment is only going to cause more damage long term, and a lot of businesses are struggling because they aren't able to staff. Now \*some\* businesses I can also agree need to pay more. There is obviously a problem if people make more money off unemployment than if they are working. So something needs to be done on the government to business side for the smaller ones that can't afford to pay more in wage, and the larger ones that can afford it need to stop being stingy and pay better. I was making 10/hr at a grocery store I worked at, and in ways I liked the job, but it just wasn't work the physical stress it put me through. There was recent rage too that the store decided to pay nearly 1 mill for a advertisement during a football game instead of back to employees who are struggling. Right now I make nearly $10 more an hour and its not as much physical stress.
Random-Brunette3 points1y ago
If people stopped spending money, the economy would die. Even more stores and manufacturing would close, more people losing jobs, it would snowball so badly. Unemployment is typically a small percentage of what your average wages were. A decade ago when I used it for 2 weeks, it didn't cover my bills - it only fed me and got me to interviews. Now with the government add ons, yes some people are making more than they used to. But that's the demographic of people most likely to spend every penny back into the economy.
Granted, it is about time the extras taper off... Start the countdown so to speak so people are inspired to get back to work. The too frail to feel safe working crowd will need to be handled on a case by case basis.
