Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

I don't understand why customers expect me to agree when they rag on poor people (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee
Like you're really gonna come to your starbucks barista and say that people who didn't pay rent during the eviction moratorium should be evicted and "dragged to court"? You're really gonna come at me saying people on unemployment are lazy and there are plenty of jobs? Who do you think I am? Where do you think you are?

I'm so sick of this

Does anyone have good ways of responding to this BS?

“I’m sorry. I can’t comment on the exploitation of marginalized people here at work. I hope you have a great day and find a compassionate person to talk to. Here’s your drink. Thank you.”
throw-Swimming-9516 36 points 1y ago
i fucking wish LMAO
cancel94 137 points 1y ago
When they complain about rent, I usually say "I made sure to pay my rent first before any other bills, usually means I don't get to eat unless I'm at work, but it's a good thing Starbucks gives me 1 food item per-shift, otherwise I would be going without food"
The_Septic_Shock 17 points 1y ago
I've done that
tryingtobecheeky 3 points 1y ago
What do they reply?
AUserNameThatsTaken1 6 points 1y ago
Save money or get more hours
morgz18 6 points 1y ago
Wow what a great idea!! /s
Mr_rhasophy-mew 5 points 1y ago
I have to pay for food working there 😑
sagataurcan 94 points 1y ago
If you want to keep your job?

"Here's your latte, (you uppity bitch) have a nice day."

End scene. Quotations is obviously because that's the quiet part you say in your head lol
star_pants 69 points 1y ago
"Here's your latte, have the day you deserve"

I guess I'm micromanaged my my store less than some of yall are. There's a line, obviously, but I tend to stay juuuuust inside in.
ryzzostar 16 points 1y ago
I only want to say what was in parenthesis...
rudebii 67 points 1y ago
I always just did the Jim Halpert face without a word. Saying anything keeps the “conversation” going more times than not, in my experience. An ambivalent look leaves doubt whether you agree with the customer’s bullshit opinions.
lelo5356 37 points 1y ago
honestly, I'd say "I rather not comment due to my views against yours, But would you like a straw or napkin?" its quick and you hit them with a question so they can't carry on
Random-Brunette 34 points 1y ago
Might need to practice in the mirror to make sure your face isn't showing contempt but you could try making them uncomfortable. "Ma'am/sir, you're talking about people I know and love."
The_Septic_Shock 29 points 1y ago
I had a person pull the "why are you understaffed all the time does no one want to work?" I told them "no, we have the money to pay people and resources to bring them in, they just don't want to spend money on the labor."
ElectricPsychopomp 7 points 1y ago
ha ha ha ha. Starbucks has been playing the fuck around and find out understaffing game LONNNNNG before covid.
The_Septic_Shock 7 points 1y ago
I know, I never said it was new for covid. Its just my response to any "lazy people", "understaffed", or "barista isn't a real job, you don't deserve that much" a-hole customers
ElectricPsychopomp 6 points 1y ago
oh yeah, I didn't take that as *you* saying that. I just didn't want people to feel sympathetic with starbucks the company-- that ridiculousness has been going on for yearrrrs, or think that somehow this "labor shortage" is *actually* a labor shortage.

Eviction Moratorium ended, approx 12 million people’s house will be on foreclosure, Chinas housing market and stock market has already collapsed. Winter is almost here and our stock market as well as housing market is on the brink of collapse.

Millions of people will lose their jobs, pensions, retirement funds, 401K’s, and homes. It’s 2008 all over again but 3x worse, Starbucks is underpaying everyone and I plan to quit soon.

With the market collapse right around the corner, you can profit off of it by participating in the once in history event MOASS. I’m never going to work at this shit job ever again and you can too, MOASS is a financial freedom ticket. Choice is yours.

🦍🚀🙌💎

P.S feel free to ask questions

What’s moass?
ItzBoogieMan 9 points 1y ago
An acronym for Mother of All Short Squeezes. A financial event that will only occur once in history due to how absurd GameStop is manipulated.

In short, massive hedge funds like Citadel LLC got greedy and stupid and shorted GameStop beyond oblivion. Shorting is borrowing and selling shares of a company hoping that the price will fall and you can pocket the difference.

They borrowed and sold more shares than there are officially existing and since they borrowed those shares, they have to purchase them back all of those shares. At minimum it is shorted 226% percent. So if you had a total of 10 shares, they borrowed and sold 26.

Purchasing all those shares back will result in a massive increase in the price ( short squeeze ) as they start to buy back those shares. You can profit off of this by purchasing GameStop shares ( GME ) and holding onto them until the price reaches 5 to 6 figures. Yes, FIVE to SIX figure prices.

DGAZF had a 40% Short interest and went from 400$ to 25,000$ in 4 days just to give you an idea, and that occurred in august of 2020 I believe.

The only thing you should absolutely not do is purchase them with Robinhood trading app, because they suspended purchasing back in January ( illegal asf) and sold off peoples shares without permission.

Edit:typo
bringitonlife 7 points 1y ago
Hi, thanks for your comment. I was wondering, should I purchase GameStop stock right now? And how much?
ItzBoogieMan 6 points 1y ago
As much as you can afford to lose, the only way the MOASS does not happen is if GameStop goes bankrupt. This is never happening because they have 1.7B in cash, a hand picked team of professionals with serious background experience, a lot of them are from Amazon btw and the chairman is Ex CEO of Chewy (#1 online per store in the world).

With that being said, if you buy 1 share, you only have 1 share to sell at 5 / 6 figures. So naturally the more you buy, the more you have to sell at different prices, 10k, 20k, 30k and so on.

Right now is a great time to purchase because the US is about to default on its debt and that is when the market collapses. Keep in mind the price can always go down but in the end, the result is the same, MOASS always happens. You only lose money if you sell your shares, so if the price goes down, don’t panic, it will always go back up.

There is a subreddit called Superstonk that has hundreds of thousands of other people all participating individually in this event. Feel free to join.

Last but not least, the government and these massive hedge funds do not want you knowing this, they own 95% of all media outlets. So whatever you hear in the news is false. Since February they have posted 600 articles telling people to Forget GameStop, that’s more than 4 per day. The public found out once in January and they shut down the game, if the public finds out again that it’s not over in fact has barely started, it’s game over for them :)
RyusuiJL 1 points 1y ago
What would be your suggestion for the best resource to learn about stocks? I literally know bugger all.
ItzBoogieMan 2 points 1y ago
I would have a recommendation if the market wasn’t so rigged against the retail investor. GameStop is the only stock I’m invested in right now, and is the only one I will be invested in until the market is either restructured and or the people responsible are behind bars.

For now, join Superstonk to find the latest updated news about GameStop :)
RyusuiJL 1 points 1y ago
Well like I said, I know nothing. Like even how buying or selling stocks work. To sell your shares, doesn't someone need to want to buy it? My assumption is that if the shares hit like an insane price, if there are more people selling than buying, you could end up holding onto your shares past the current cost. Then if it drops ridiculously low you're now stuck waiting either for the next boost or just tossing them after waiting long enough and trying to recoup as much of your purchase as possible.

Again, that is only pure speculation on my part so please feel free to correct me.
ItzBoogieMan 1 points 1y ago
Well part of your speculation is correct, for every buy there must be a seller. Once these hedge funds are margin called and liquidated, it gives the controls to a computer which is built to balance the books.

The computer will purchase every share on the market that is available, then it will move to shares that are highly priced. The upward movement of GME will be in big blocks, these blocks are smaller hedge funds being liquidated first, then moving onto the bigger ones.

Selling all your shares at peak will be hard because no one knows when the peak is. But it’s above 100k I’ll tell you that. So sell your shares in portions.

As for buying and selling, open a trading account with fidelity if you’re in the US and connect your bank account, then transfer funds to your trading account by using the designated button on the trading app.

You can then purchase shares by typing in GME in the search bar, it’ll ask if you want a market order or limit order. Market order is the next available share, could be a few dollars below or above the price of GME. If you want a stricter purchasing price then use the limit order button.

There was a total of 1.5B shares traded in the span of 3 days in January. So my guess is the total number of shares circulating is around 2B.

The official number of shares existing issued by GameStop is only 75M. So you will have plenty of time to sell, the MOASS will be over a period of 2 weeks maybe even more.

And if you are wondering where this money will come from, it’s the market they abuse, Derivatives market worth over 1 quadrillion.

Hope this helped.
wonderess221 16 points 1y ago
you can either completely disregard what they say and continue the “script” we usually follow. like “your drink will be down at the end” “your total will be…” “what can i get for you” or you can add in something like “i’m glad you feel comfortable sharing your opinion, we are inclusive to everyone here at starbucks” (some corporate bs they tell us to say to customers every time they know customers will say something insensitive to our faces about human rights). its always like the same three quotations you can look it up on partner hub if you want more “conversation points” or whatever they call it lol
reclusivegiraffe 5 points 1y ago
i always do that — just carry on like normal and only as work related stuff
sailorgrumpycat 9 points 1y ago
Just tell them they are talking to a service worker and to read the room.
coldcatsoup 6 points 1y ago
Any negative conversation that arises at the store and in which the customer tries to drag me in... I just always say, "Oh I leave the outside world, outside. I only concern myself with Starbucks and Coffee when functioning as your Barista."
TurtleeSam 5 points 1y ago
I worked window a lot and got a lot of this behavior. Whenever someone said something like this or equally as ignorant I always said, “What do you mean by that?” Because then they have to explain their own ignorance.
ChemicalBarnacle 3 points 1y ago
I would just say, “yeah okay, here is your latte have a nice day!”

Then talk about it with the other partners later.
drinkliquidclocks 3 points 1y ago
I literally just say "no comment" 👨🏻‍🦯
Motor_Owl_1093 2 points 1y ago
They do it because they know service workers arent normally allowed to disagree with them. They use their baristas, waitresses, etc to dump.
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yup. You're trapped and they know it. Total power play.
metrokid_98 2 points 1y ago
One time a regular named Karen (literally her name) came in to my store to pick up her mobile order. She pulled me aside while I was on cold bar to tell me that a homeless woman asked her for some spare change in the parking lot and when she said no she also told her to get a job and that she worked hard for her money so she shouldn’t have to give it to “lazy people like her.” The only reason Karen told me this was because after she said that, the homeless woman was “upset and agressive,” and that I should do something about it.

… *takes a breath* …

Before I could even respond another partner who has worked there for less time than me came up and told her to call the cops next time because you never know what’ll happen or some bs. I was on cold bar and I didn’t have time to debate the ethics of calling the police but like 1. That’s not Starbucks policy and 2. Maybe don’t berate and shame homeless people Karen. I was so upset and I was having a panic attack on the floor. I told my shift and the manager and they talked to the other partner but jeez that was a stressful day.
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Jesus christ that's awful

We had a customer call the cops on a homeless man who was sitting in our lobby once. I don't get it, man. If you don't want to give some money then fine but it costs zero dollars to not call the cops on someone for no reason
metrokid_98 2 points 1y ago
I’m slowly realizing a lot of partners at my store have anti-homeless attitudes. Like when i was hired I learned there’s a chronically homeless guy who came in every day and we would give him a tall coffee with cream (nothing fancy). I always found him to be friendly and appreciative and he’d sometimes smoke cigs outside with a few partners. I work mornings though, and apparently in the evenings he’s done some questionable things like use our bathroom sinks to bathe and he’s clearly been on drugs a few times. Every time though a shift or a manager would talk to him and say hey maybe don’t do that here and he always understood and apologized. Last night though apparently he did some “really bad” but no one would tell me what, and because of it we wouldn’t give him a free cup of coffee anymore because “we don’t want to encourage that behavior anymore.” He came in this morning with a case work, and he was in a torn up hospital gown and some dirty pants so he likely ODed last night. I understand where my manager and the shifts are coming from, but geez it’s one cup of coffee; one stable thing in his life. The whole thing just made me sad, but there’s not a whole lot I can do about it.
SelloutDude 2 points 1y ago
“I don’t get paid enough to make coffee let alone engage in economic discussions. I hope you have the day you deserve.”
46patisse 2 points 1y ago
“I hear — Peet’s, Dunkin Donuts, Tim Horton’s — makes really good coffee”

Just listen. You don't have to side with what they say. Someone probably views you are an intellectual person, who understands their conversation and feels they won't be conversing with a wall.

Some customers are more vocally opinionated than others. When you gain more experience with the public, you will learn more than you ever learned from students in highschool. At first you will be blown away by what you are told. After a while, it won't phase you. Just when you think you are an adult, you get blown away by open conversations from strangers.

At first you'll run to your favorite partner, and spill the beans, then you'll see you've been living in a bubble, and eventually not shock the other person with your newfound experience.

If you ever become a bartender, you're going to hear a lot worse.
