No, We Cannot Wash Your Reusable Cup For You. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Aspire145
Had a man demand we take his dirty cup to the back, wash it/sanitize it and then put his drink in it. What part of "CLEAN CUPS ONLY" do people not understand?
knit_von_purl 105 points 1y ago
I'll make the drink in our cup and hand it to them and they can pour it in their bacteria infested cup.
Aspire145 [OP] 106 points 1y ago
The cup had moldy milk in it and something unidentifiable crusted over the sides of it. It was absolutely disgusting
knit_von_purl 132 points 1y ago
Throw the whole customer away
pinkraisin 49 points 1y ago
Had a lady try that on me, it noticeablely had something in it still and she asked about it being cleaned and I told her we can't wash it for her. She asked if she could rinse it out in the bathroom. Me being non-confrontational, I was like uhh sure? Luckily we never had to touch her cup at all because she took forever in the bathroom and they already put her drink in a regular cup lol
Aspire145 [OP] 66 points 1y ago
Idk, maybe I'm weird but I'd never go to an establishment and demand they wash MY cup for me. Lol.
pinkraisin 13 points 1y ago
Same! Thats just wrong
marianagbs 32 points 1y ago
I can’t believe there’s people who actually expect this, it’s beyond me
Aspire145 [OP] 26 points 1y ago
I could understand him asking if we could pour a little water in and then out before putting the drink in. Ok no big deal as the bars have a little sink next to them at my store.

But I'm not going back, washing/sanitizing and then putting a customer's cup in the Hobart. Idk what kind of service he thinks sbux offers, but it's not this lol
YorkTownBratty 12 points 1y ago
We don’t get paid enough for this lmao
fuckthisshit____ 5 points 1y ago
It’s the same people who roll through the drive through without saying a word even when we try to be polite, they’re just plain entitled and rude
philosopher_cat_lady 16 points 1y ago
He thinks we're his maid
Royal_Concentrate_00 13 points 1y ago
Duuuuuude. I went to the mat with a guy over this.

*Customer purchasing new cups after annoying me with "how many ounces in this one and that one"*
(Sufice to say an asshole from the jump)

Gets to register, places order, and asks that I put *both* drinks in *both* of his *new* cups

Me: I'm sorry, sir. I can't do that unless both cups are clean

C: (with attitude) excuse me

Me: repeats previous statement

C: that's actually not true

Me: (don't engage)

C: you're misinformed

Me: (DONT ENGAGE)

C: aNoThEr StArBuCKs diD iT

Me: (ENGAGES) Well sir you must've put up a hell of a fight and wore the barista down because that is against STARBUCKS policy

C: so you aren't going to wash my cup

Me: Nope, against starbucks policy. Still want the cups?

Customer: I WANT MY DRINKS IN THE CUP, YOU CAN DO IT. YOU JUST DONT WANT TO.

Me: Against. Starbucks. Policy. Your total is $$

Customer: blah blah blah

Me: okay, your total is $$

Customer: (scans app) continues to blah blah blah

Me: thank you sir. Your drinks will be ready at the end of the bar. *walks away, leaving the ranting lunatic to rant in lunacy*

Thankfully this was during a rare slow time. I went to the back and told my ssv what happened. He backed me, thankfully.

I really dislike how other starbucks stores do things that we aren't supposed to do. It makes it harder for the rest of us
Royal_Concentrate_00 15 points 1y ago
I think it boils down to 2 types of partners. You either don't allow customers to walk all over you. Or you're fed up and don't care to deal with the drama. I relate to both.
msvl419 1 points 1y ago
Honest question- not trying to be rude: Are customers not allowed to buy new cups inside Starbucks and have them filled with a purchased drink? I assumed the cups being sold are clean.
Royal_Concentrate_00 2 points 1y ago
They can be purchased. And in theory are clean because they have never been used but people have touched them, opened them and looked inside, touched the straw and not to mention the dust inside from the packaging. It also wouldn't be practical for us to wash every new cup and if we do it for one we would have to do it for all
Berry_Barbara 11 points 1y ago
Can we rinse the cup for customers? I had a lady ask if I could just rinse it and it looked generally clean so I did a quick rinse under the sink and put her tea in it since I wasn’t sure
Aspire145 [OP] 16 points 1y ago
There's a big difference between you putting some water in it and then rinsing it out vs you cleaning an incredibly dirty cup... if it isn't clean, don't bring it to the register.
SelocAvrap 6 points 1y ago
If it's actually clean iirc you can put hot water in it for 20-30 seconds then rinse out with cold
rukittenmerightmeow- -8 points 1y ago
NO jfc

Years ago we’d offer to clean it for them (instead of them rinsing it in the bathroom sink. Cmon people) . we had a green bean was super nice, but the most aloof partner I’ve ever trained, write on the customers travel mug in permanent marker!! When our shift saw it she freaked out and ran to the back to try to clean it off. I guess this post wasn’t about the dirty mug but washing it out reminded me of that story lol. People are nuts.
narviat 6 points 1y ago
sugar free vanilla might've removed the permanent marker lmao
dayahorne 9 points 1y ago
I'll only wash your cup if you bought it off the shelf. Anything else, hell no.
Aspire145 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
How about a cup covered in crusty stuff with moldy milk and possibly coffee still in the cup? (:
Theotar 8 points 1y ago
Washing cups for customers was standard for a time, did they change it because of covid?
Aspire145 [OP] 11 points 1y ago
Clearly they have.

"What part of CLEAN CUPS do people not understand?"
Theotar 16 points 1y ago
I happy they did. It felt really odd taking someone cup into the back to wash it. I don't trust people not to be putting bio hazards into their cups.
Aspire145 [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Per my manager, he said we've never been allowed to wash a customer's cup in the back. So it appears, it varies store to store? Idk.
looker009 14 points 1y ago
Your manager is wrong, prior to Covid we absolutely took it to the back to wash it and sanitize it if it was that dirty. It was in resource manual that if the cup was dirty that you must wash it.
Vosstonmass1 5 points 1y ago
Yes they did. I mean it’s a pandemic. We stopped allowing personal cups of any kind for almost 2 years now.
kIose 2 points 1y ago
Was it? I always remember them wanting us to only accept clean cups only. Rinsing with hot water at the most.
Theotar 1 points 1y ago
They have jumped around on the subject. I remember a rule coming out we cannot use a personal cup unless we wash it, to make sure it was clean and safe.
acnh1222 2 points 1y ago
The only time I have ever (as a customer) asked in the slightest about washing a personal cup was when I was getting a second drink after sitting in the cafe for hours and I said “do you want me to rinse this out before I give it to you? And if so, where?” And the barista said they could do it. But I would never assume or be angry at a barista if they said they couldn’t wash or use personal cups.
Saradigm 2 points 1y ago
Be like I’m not your spouse lmao
anitasdoodles 1 points 1y ago
People are so lazy they won’t even wash their own damn dishes.
Aspire145 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Or those people who try and give you their stale/moldy plastic sbux cups at the DT like you're their personal maid. "CaN yOu ToSs ThIs FoR mE?! No, Sarah. I cannot
Paul-Michel 1 points 1y ago
I mean if yall have a sign up that says that, no excuse. But I went through the training a month ago as a rehire and it's in the current training modules to clean the cup then make the drink in it. It doesn't specify what is meant by "clean the cup" so I guess it's at the discretion of the barista taking the order/making the drink.
Aspire145 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
We have a sign that says "CLEAN REUSABLE CUPS ONLY". Also, this man is a regular and knows it's currently clean cups only so no excuse on either end for him lol.
chungabungalung -27 points 1y ago
Pre pandemic it was always the policy to wash dirty personal cups before we put the drinks in them.
Aspire145 [OP] 54 points 1y ago
We aren't in pre-pandemic times any longer so this isn't an excuse. (:

If a sign says "CLEAN CUPS ONLY", it means clean cups only. Not that we will wash it for you, not that you can pass us your crusty cup with molded milk and coffee in it. It means CLEAN.
jazzysoranio 13 points 1y ago
Actually, it wasn’t. Official policy was that we rinse it out with hot water from the hot water dispenser. They clarified this back when we first launched the reusable hot cups years ago. Not really sure why you’re getting downvoted though since all you did was specify what used to be and didn’t present it as some sort of excuse. But yeah, maybe your individual store always did it, but company policy was never to wash customers’ personal dishes.
imeanitpeanut 9 points 1y ago
Not in my area it wasn’t, we never did more than fill it with tea water and dump it.
