Advice for sudden lack of hours ):(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by indiemads
My store just hired a plethora of new green beans, which we haven’t been successful in doing for a while, but now we have so many… and I went from working four or five days a week regularly to now working two. I checked my schedule for next week and my stomach dropped. I can’t pay my rent or any of my bills or expenses on two days a week. Should I talk to my manager? What should I say? I’m so scared that with all of the new partners this is going to be the new normal.

I know in my district there is a facebook page for shift swapping! when I want more hours I look on there to see who’s looking for shifts to get covered or I post “hey I need more hours, looking for shifts on *blank day*” ! I would type in your city and then starbucks shift swap or smthing like that

I have a question about this. So in a different district I have a friend whose story regularly has someone call out, could I just take their shift? Would I have to tell my manager and get an okay? I'm not familiar with it. My friends shift said she would, but doesn't know if she'd have to talk with my manager or anything.

If it’s a different district you might not be able to, but same district you should be able to no problem

I've worked in a different district. Your numbers won't work to check people out on a register, but you can do everything else at that store. (:

You do have to be careful it isn't in a different area/pay rate though. Just a different district by itself isn't a problem, but there is a certain limit to where you can work.

if you want to cover their shift, call the store and let them know you’re taking the shift and then tell your manager, so they can let the other store “borrow” you ((so you’ll be in the system)) ! but talk to your friend and confirm everything

Talk to your manager!! If it gets really bad, I'd recommend transferring.

Tell manager, "I've noticed my hours have been severely reduced, may I ask why?" No real reason/fitting in new people. "My normal schedule is what my life is budgeted around. Are there any more hours to be had? Maybe a few clean plays, or come in while green beans do computer module training? (Or just to help at peak times. I'm 3 weeks new, no computer time scheduled yet, and seriously feel thrown to the wolves). Also I'd like to post a note on the schedule to see if anyone has hours they're willing to give me." If yes, great... Do some random stuff for 2 weeks. Next, "can I expect x hours moving forward? If not, I'll probably have to transfer to a store that needs me more."
Good luck!

Definitely talk to your manager and tell them you need more hours. They may be able to accommodate, but maybe not.
Someone mentioned using the time off to make money through other means. That's great!
Another idea is to tell people at your store that you can pick up shifts. With so many people working, esp green beans, how many can you truly expect to show up to every single shift? It may be annoying, but look at it as if you're now "on-call" and be ready to go in. This may not be easy if you have other commitments, but you know your situation. Do whatever works best for you.

Two things. Get a second job that’s part time or ask for more hours and explain why.

I second this! Be very vocal about looking for a second job and tell them that if you don’t get the hours you need you’ll be finding something else.
Another option is to give your number to any stores in your area that you’d be willing to cover shifts at.

Look into your state or city’s labor laws too. Here where I am, they can’t decrease our hours by more than 20% without violation, I’ve been told. Worth looking in to as well, best of luck!
