I hate using our names (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by distraughtcato
I’m not sure if it’s the same everywhere but my SM is very big on using our names and our customers names, to create relationships and whatnot but I hate it. I don’t mind the customers names because it makes it easier to call out drinks but it makes me so incredibly uncomfortable when some random person I don’t know uses my name. It just feels so uncomfortably personal to me, does anyone else feel like this?

This old dude in dt read my name tag then looked me in the eye while I handed him his drink and said “Thank you [real name here]” and I wanted to retreat into the back room so bad, I hated it. But then when my SM is one dto she’ll say stuff like “[real name here] will see you at the window” and I know most of the customers probably don’t notice or care but it just unsettles me for some reason.

I can't say I love it either, it feels oddly violating. Does your store allow you to do "preferred names" or nicknames on name tags? I feel like that should be an option for all customer-interacting employees.

Yeah we can use any preferred name, which I guess means I could use a nickname ig

I would say this is the best course of action. I am allowed to not wear my name tag (unless the DM or something is coming in) because of how uncomfortable it was becoming. It makes it better if you choose a nickname that has no meaning to you and you’ll no longer have that personal connection forced.

Honestly I change me name every few weeks and maybe one person notices.

I had a seasonal name winter, spring , summer and autumn never told customers what one was my real name 😂

this is why i changed my name in the starbucks system. these customers don't need to know who i am

I know exactly what you mean.
It’s unnerving.

Some cultures don’t allow others to use your first name unless you allow them to. It’s seen as disrespectful.

I hate it too. I’ve hated having a name tag at all my jobs. It just feels really uncomfortable having someone you don’t know call you by your name which is something personal. One time a customer even called me a nickname version of my name right after meeting me 😵‍💫

I think of it the opposite way. So many customers treat baristas like trash, I’ve always used my coworkers names when referring to them around customers as a reminder to customers that we’re human

My first rule on my shifts as shift supervisor was allowing partners to change their names. We had a lot of sex-pest customers asking for female staff names, and when I couldn't step in or serve, it was somewhat good to know they didn't have their personal information

I straight up refuse to wear my name tag, fuck em
lewabwee 7 points 1y ago
Yeah, it’s really fucking weird they want it to be so personal. Starbucks really isn’t okay.

But yeah we could probably just make up names.

I hate when people ask for your name specifically like when they’re pissed and want to write a complaint.

But yeah I used to not mind the customers knowing my name and calling me by it, but more recently it does irk me and I just seem to hate everyone in general 🙃

Alot of child care facilities use fake names cause parents are crazy might be worth using a fake name as ur "preferred name"

This creepy flirty guy I don't remember ever seeing or talking to called me by my first name... I want wearing my name tag... He belongs in jail I was so uncomfortable 😭

Agreed. Even if people in the service industry/fast food have nametags, it’s impolite to actually call them by their name without asking first, imo. Remember that wherever you shop at, you are there by choice; the employees are not.

Well, it makes me feel better than when people call me miss/ma’am because 🥴😬
