New hire... but ready to quit? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sugar_bnny
I'm going to be honest, its been a little less than a month and I'm ready to call it quits with this shithole.

A brief explanation I guess. (I bit long I guess?)

I graduated university recently but had no luck getting a job in my desired field so in order to just not do anything I decided to get a job. I was able to land a job on Starbucks, and at another company that I worked at previosuly but that doesnt offer as good benefits as Starbucks, and only starts offering them at 36 hrs, but they pay me much more because I already have experience there. So I decide to keep them both but I was planning on dropping one at the 3 months mark and the other at the 6 months mark, in the meantime I would also keep looking for the job in my desired field and if I get it before that time frame? Great.

So, I got hired in Starbucks but I ended up working at a store different than the the I applied to, which is a little bit farther from my house than the other, thats fine. Whatever. The first week of training was pretty good, I was trained at the store I originally applied to and it was much more calm than I expected. I am told that the pace should be pretty similar at the other job so when I get there I should have time to get some hands on training there.

Makes sense. That store is smaller and dont have the newer machines so they can't teach me how to use them. Fast forward to the following week at the new store and the pacing is much faster than the other store (but this one has a drive through so kind of understandable), but things still look good even though I have to get up at 3:30 am to help with the opening shift cause of course I cant pick other hours. I am the only new hire so people around me are able to keep and eye on me while I am on DTO and DTR alone until peak hour when someone else gets there. They also taught me how to to stock the fridged and the food cart thingy. So far so good, I was avle to get used to the pacing of those two stations and I am kinda learning where things are on the menu.

Fast forward following week.

There are 2 other new hires, all of them are basically shoved with me in the DTR and DTO and we shuffled around in those positions but the manager expected ME to help them in stuff that I dont even know how to do snd got annoyed that I didn't know how to do so the 3 of us kinda all tried to make it work but I ended up having to be in both DTR and DTO at the same time but was kot allowed to have a headset so I had no idea of the orders (but was still expected to help find things on menu) while charging people for their orders while delivering food and making sure the drinks were done properly (which BTW I still have no ofea how to do and only have a basic idea). Forst day this happened I was told that it sould be a 1 time thing, but it keeps happening and so far those other 2 hires still seem to be stumbling around on the stations (they are or at least seem much younger and I am so I kinds get it) and its so hard to learn the responsabilities of the job and each station while I have to also make sure that food is put through and charged correctly, not to mention deliver. Ther is also an issue of our monitor (the one for the hot and cold bar) sometimes showing completed random orders that literally belong to no one and niticing too late so I have to go back to the orders and make sure I charge them for the correct orders and this is killing me already. Especially because I am expected to fullh take the blame and accept any haesh comments I get from the costumers. I am also finding it very hard to get along with my coworkers (new and veterans) when it feels like I am getting no support whatsoever but have to constantly fake being okay wkth everything and I can't even take a breather on other days because of my other job.

Like I mentioned before my plan was to drop the other job at the 3 months mark (or a little later cause during christmas time we would get paid even more and money is money) and then I wiuld drop the bsrist job at the 6 months mark so that I would get the stocks, but at this point I am already regretting everything and constantly faking being okay while at the job while making sure my English is understood (it is my second language and my accent comes out when I get tired or angry) is making me me wonder if it is worth or if I should quit now. At this point I am also wondering if they are actively discriminating against me cause I am very clearly an immigrant, or if its because I look young (baby face) and easy to bully, or something else all together?

On a side note, my parents have really set ideas of what one should and should not do (job related) and since I am living with the due to the pandemic I guess it is also another factor that its adding even more stress into this whole situation. So I havent really wanted to get their opinions cause a part of me feels (and fears) they are just going to tell me to suck it up and go throught witht my original plan.

Does anyone have any suggestions? About what I should do and even other jobs options?

If I were you, I would quit. If you decide not to I would absolutely take it up with your SM or DM. Nobody should be training when they’re new, it’s not fair to anyone. Next time they try to pull that crap tell them you aren’t comfortable training when you have t even had full training yourself. Refuse. If they don’t have the resources to properly train new baristas at your store then they need to either train the newbies themselves, find a store for them to train at, or just not hire more people than they can train.
