Long story short, me and another barista got told we’re not allowed to talk like make conversation with each other when not on break. He was sweeping and I was making a refresher, not rush, not a bunch of drinks lined up, an actually casual part of the day. I’m so fucking furious I wanted to cry right there on the floor. I feel like I’m working myself to exhaustion every fucking day, I stay later than my schedule every day cause they need coverage (9.5 hours today) and the shifts are in the back gossiping when they want, but the second we dare to ask each other how we’re doing while still working it’s “are you on break, you’re not supposed to talk” and funnily enough like 10 minutes that same shift started talking to another shift about football. I have so many issues with this job and this was just the last straw like I know it might be a silly complaint but it made me feel like I’m not human. I wish I could afford to just not show up to this job ever again.

I didn’t realize we worked at Amazon

wtf??? that sounds insane to me!is it only one person who enforces that or is it all of your shift supervisors? at my location we’re always making conversation on the floor and my supervisors are fine with it as long as it’s not distracting us from our tasks or serving customers, even join us sometimes! it’s a big part of the reason our store is one of the best in our district, because we’re all friendly and work so well together. you deserve so much better and aren’t paid nearly enough to be told you’re not even allowed to talk while working. if it’s a common occurrence I’d just quit tbh, teamwork is one of the main reasons I love my job and if I wasn’t allowed to goof off a bit during my 9.5 hour shift with my coworkers it wouldn’t be worth it

That’s garbage, as long as we are promptly attending to customers we are free to converse. Goes without saying, appropriate topics, inside voices, yada yada. But that SSV is a jerk and just plain wrong. Your SM needs to know before he bums out any more valuable baristas. They literally can’t hire enough

still have conversations. i’ve never heard of someone getting written up or fired bc of talking. what’s the first amendment for???
StillEmotional2 points1y ago
The first amendment doesn’t protect you at work. It’s a private business. The first amendment protects you from the government

This is NOT a silly complaint. Whoever told you this, tell their immediate superior about it. This is definitely not something they are supposed to criticize you over.

Yeah, I definitely agree with the other user’s comment as it relates to my store as well; teamwork is what keeps us going when things take a turn for the worst. This sounds like it’s just that ssv in particular but it could be the store environment itself idk. If your sm is nice and you feel like you can talk to them about it, then you should, and maybe they can give you some feedback on how to work with that ssv or hopefully they’ll offer to coach the ssv about how to approach other partners on the floor in a respectful manner. I’m sorry they did that to you since it’s not right at all, and I hope you can figure out a way to make it better. Good luck w everything!

I would start small talking 24/7 just out of spite 💀 where in the job description does it say you aren't allowed to talk, fuck that person
Not very third place of them eh?
rasperries4 points1y ago
Lol if they ever try to talk to you about anything unrelated to work at all just ignore them and when they ask why you’re not answering say you’re not allowed to talk
RyusuiJL2 points1y ago
That's not right. Talk to your SM. If they don't deal with it, talk to your DM. Go to HR if your DM doesn't address it.
First off, jf you're not having inappropriate conversations, I don't see a problem. Second, if you're still attending to your tasks while conversing, I don't see a problem. Third, if the SSV is doing EXACTLY what they told you not to do, I SEE A PROBLEM.
Don't let one bad SSV spoil it for you. But be sure to be tactful when talking to your SM/DM/HR. Just deliver the facts without bias and without whining. I'm not saying you're doing that here, just trying to make sure when you bring it up that you're able to be heard properly.

You aren’t allowed... to talk??? To your coworkers??? Jesus Christ this company has gone downhill.
StillEmotional1 points1y ago
I had a store manager like that (chain bookstore) if she saw you talking you got chastised and told to get back to work. She would also hid behind bookshelves and listen to your conversations with customers and then critique them if you didn’t talk to the customers her way
