Be prepared for chaos. I’m sorry I don’t mean to be a downer but it’s just not the best place right now.

I got 3 half days for training and they went so fast I was hella confused. Tossed in drive through before I even knew the cup sizes. Survived, but almost walked out.
rio8envy75 points1y ago
I’m sorry that happened to you. We’ve been partially training some of our new partners so they can help us on the floor. We’re going to finish training them but we’re not going to throw them on bar. Plus we don’t have the staff to have someone be off the floor for a 2 week training. It’s a shit show right now. I’m just realizing how bad it is. I mean I knew it was bad but I kept trying to be positive. I just don’t think I can handle this much longer.

Starbucks is a good place to emotionally grow but it's a place of commitment for that. We basically get emotionally abused by customers and sometimes other employees. Don't let them drive you off. But you really do have to have a backbone to work at starbucks, because things move fast and you don't always have time for emotion.

thanks for the heads up :)

if you work mornings and it’s overwhelming and just not the vibe… asked to get switched to evenings! or mid shift! that’s what I did and I can tell you I loveeee it there now. i’m on bar everyday it’s not as busy and so much more relaxed!

Something that I literally just mastered is.. if I have to clock in at 5:30. I can’t leave the house at 5:25 and expect to get there on time if , I live 10 minutes away.

LOL thanks for the tip

Im seeing a lot of people on here saying how bad it is! I just wanted to let you know you absolutely can have a great time working here. I absolutely love my job and while i have had some rough experiences here, its overall been super great.
You’ll probably have to advocate for yourself especially at the beginning. Ask for bar time to practice. Ask as many questions as possible. Ive been here for almost a year and still ask questions sometimes. Its okay. Its way better to take 10 seconds to ask than it is to have to take 10 minutes trying to fix a mistake.
Make a cheat sheet. I kept a sheet in my pocket for my first six months with all the different recipes on it. It really helps.
Good luck! Dont let everyone scare you and try to give yourself a chance to learn the job. Ive always heard it takes 3-6 months at Starbucks to feel like you really know whats going on and that really is true.

Ask all the questions, even if they seem stupid. Also ask multiple people, and find out what the “Starbucks standard” is for everything so you know how to properly do it as well (partner hub is good for this, you can search just about anything). Seek out training always, it will help you improve and help you help others in the future.

Congratulations! Don't be afraid to ask questions. Your partners are there to help you! It can be very overwhelming at first, but take a deep breath and give it some time. Remember that you are one person and can only do so much.

thank you! ill be sure to ask questions. everyone on here is kind of scaring me though, i was super happy to get the job but it seems like a lot of employees are struggling rn ...
Puzzled-Pianist-42270 points1y ago
I actually love it. I started at the beginning of June and start as a SSV this week. Don't anyone get you down. Enjoy being happy for getting the job and form your own opinion once you start 💛

I just got hired too! Tomorrow is my 3rd day of training. From the sounds of it I am lucky to have a very helpful trainer! I’m definitely going to make a cheat sheet I can carry with me because some drinks are weird.

Hey, I just got hired at the end of August, so I’m pretty new too. It’s true that just about everywhere is understaffed, so everyone is working really hard to keep afloat and it’s very stressful right now. My advice for you is to stay calm, stay patient, and more importantly, STAY POSITIVE. I cannot begin to stress how important a positive attitude can be at work. When you come in with a shitty attitude, not only does your day suck, but you’re going to drag down everyone else with you. A negative attitude can literally drain the energy out of your coworkers where being positive can be really helpful! Every smile and laugh counts during this exhausting time, and that’s the most important thing to remember. Everything else comes with time, practice, and Reddit cheat sheets :)
aloveconfession- [OP]1 points1y ago
thank you so much. it was such a downer seeing everyone so negative abt starbucks cuz i was actually very happy to get this job so thank you for being positive about it
TSOHG-A-MA-I1 points1y ago
Ugh, ikr? Yeah, it’s minimum wage food service, and sometimes customers can be rude and fussy, but that’s the same wherever you go. But having a piss poor time at work is really down to how you decide to feel about it. It’s a choice. Make the right one. Every day. For you, for the customers, and everyone you work with. $1
Get this idea out of your head asap. You are a fast food employee, and will have to deal with all the shit that comes with it.
Also rn most places are understaffed so you’ll be asked to work faster and faster. Starbucks is behind in pay compared to other fast food places, some in my area like del taco mcDs are at 18 an hour with starbs still at 13, so dont give too much of yourself to the company. Hold onto your soul

(I work in a licensed store so if you don’t take this as you will) Ask every single question you have as soon as you have it. Your trainer is there to answer your questions, but sometimes simple things fall through the cracks. Also, if you’re going to be steaming milk, ask for a lot of practice until you feel good about it. I still get it wrong sometimes and I wish I’d asked for more practice than I got.

It depends on how you handle stress, but prepare yourself, physically and mentally.
Perhaps you won't feel like it is rough on the first week because they might "baby" you and show you how thinks work (if you are lucky) for after the training/modules are done and you start to actually be on the floor things will get much, much harder.
Keep a sharp eye around you once this happens, see how your managers and coworkers handle situations with rude costumers. Do they let them get away with beign rude to you? Do apply the "costumer is always right" excuse even if they aren't? If this is the case, dip quickly. In my opinion, if they are willing to let them get away with minor things, they might also do it for more dangerous ones including assaulting or harassing you.
Above everything, don't let them get away with stuff you otherwise wouldn't let other people. Don't let them manipulate or guilt you into working more/less shifts or hours you didn't sign up for. Eventually, it might become to hard to say no to them even if you are too tired or don't have enough time for other things, it might make leaving if needed harder than it needs to be.
Remember, of they don't let you feel like they will have your back, they don't deserve you. Being a barista is a job, not your life.
Sorry if this was really heave and negative but it needed to be said. Good luck with everything.
