if you get 30+ hours a week, are you okay at your job? i am a curious green bean who has been here for about a month now and my hours jumped from 25 /wk to 35.25 weekly (self.starbucksbaristas)

I used to be scheduled 20-25 hrs max a week and then suddenly my hours jumped to 35-39 a week and it’s been that way since march :( unfortunately my store is so understaffed i can’t change my availability or find ppl to cover shifts (considering 70% of our employees ncns basically everyday) we’re also one of the two highest volume stores in my district, so..

at first it was nice because extra $$$ but it’s broken my body down so bad. there’s been days i’ve actually fallen asleep while driving bc my body just shuts down from exhaustion (and caffeine does the exact opposite of waking me up, lol. i try to avoid it until i can get home and chug my pre-nap iced hazelnut oat milk latte)

I was a green bean who went through exactly this, and yes. I started in March in a very high volume cafe only. I had to move in June and when I changed stores to a drive thru with partners who ONLY worked 20 hours or less, I realized that my experience really set me apart, I right away went to drive bar consistently and was one of the strongest partners at that store. I had to move again (husband is going to grad school) and just started at my new store. It’s a quieter downtown cafe only and is very nice. Everyone there is pretty experienced and I fit right in. The biggest thing it helped me with is honestly just being able to have standards really cemented in my mind. I was working 40+ hours at one point and I had experience at every position and seen a lot of different situations that I’ve learned from.

Generally I would say yes, but there are quite a few factors that play into this. How understaffed is your store? Is your SM competent? I would consider myself to be decent barista, and I get approximately 32 to 36 hours a week at a somewhat high volume drive-thru store. Our SM is usually adequate enough at getting people in the right positions/times, but has made questionable placements. We had someone who up until they got fired for starting shit was in the ballpark of 25-30 hours a week, not sure what their availability was at the time.

I'm a blonde roast bean and last week I hit 42 hours. By the end of that last shift I was NOT okay. Thankfully someone was able to cover a shift for me the next day so I could have a day off, but since Sunday evening I've been fighting getting sick. Not going to do that again. 32-35 hours seems to be ok with me as long as it's 5 days or less. Even short shifts multiple days in a row is hard.

I made it up 🙃 it basically means I'm still new (at least I feel new) but can't call myself green anymore because A. a lot of the partners at my store are newer than me and because B. ... *stares into distance* I've seen some shit, man.
