Dropping school for promotion (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SBUXBaristaLA
Hey guys, I've been doing a lot of thinking and I wanted some advice. The degree program I'm in right now just really isn't what I see myself ever wanting to do as a career, and I was just offered the training to become an ASM over the next four ish months. I'm torn on what to do because school is important, but I really enjoy what I'm doing right now at SBUX. Are there any SMs, ASMs or really anybody else who would be able to give me some advice on what to do? Thanks!

I literally just had the same exact dilemma. I ended up dropping school for a semester or two to stack that good ASM bread and then go get my degree later on or find online programs. Education isn’t linear for everyone and this might be a great time for you to unwind from school and figure out what degree program you’d like to pursue when you pick it up again :)

How much longer have you got before you finish the degree? If years then it might not be a bad move. If it's less then two, stick with the degree.

Having a degree isn't only about the career you want, but about your future options. Want to eventually get a Master's? Then any degree will do. Many jobs including Starbucks management love any degree.

Also, while you love being a barista, you might not be so in love with the pressures of being in management. Been there, done that with McDonald's. So wish I have stayed with my degree.

I took an ASM position for 3 months and then stepped down to barista because I didn’t like the job. I missed barring, interacting with customers, hanging with my coworkers on the floor, clocking out and not having to worry about my job when I went home.

Plus sides of ASM: bonuses, pay rate if you’re only making shift supervisor salary right now (I was making shift manager salary so it wasn’t really much of a pay raise), personal days, decisions you make can change the store for the better (or worse) and potential to move up to store manager (if you want to work in retail management, I did not), getting to make hiring decisions.

When I was younger I felt a lot of pressure to do things in the "right order" and kept disappointing myself going in and out of colleges while working. I wasn't in the right head space, liked too many things but couldn't decide a passion... I can relate to you. You could probably muscle through the degree, but if there's a good chance you'll be miserable and feel like you're wasting time and money doing it... Don't. There are tons of higher education opportunities with community college, online, trade schools, you can jump back in whenever your ready. In the meantime, make money and gain life experience.

Only a Barista, but I've known multiple SMs who finish their degree - you can always pause ASU to do ASM things and then restart when you feel comfortable in your new role or if you want to step down ! I would prioritize whatever you feel the pull to most, and recognize both opportunities will probably be there at a future point.
