Just got hired as a Barista! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by blackkmirror
Hey all,

Just waiting on my background check to complete and then my SM said I will get a formal offer/update! I'm coming on as part time only for evenings/weekends as I have a full time day job rn. I'm excited though since I have always wanted to work at Starbucks and love the brand/coffee. Have a few questions that I probably should have asked in the interview but I was so nervous by the end of it because I thought I had bombed it. (I didn't.. yay!)

1. How hard is it to take time off? I have a 2 week vacation planned in December to go to the UK to visit my SO (boyfriend lives there for school temporarily.) Can I still maintain part time status and take off 2 weeks? I told the SM that hired me I needed that amount of time off but wasn't sure if she fully understood?
2. Is it possible to choose your hours? I would prefer early mornings.
3. Any tips for starting out with zero barista experience? I'm super nervous and have never worked with food/beverage before. I'm a graphic designer by day.

Thanks in advance for any info!

give yourself time to figure it out. work as much as you can the first 2 months because getting good as fast as possible is what will make the job tolerable. study at home. people are going to be intense when they talk to you but its called "coaching" and "creating good habits" and they are taught to be that way.

choosing hours and taking time off will depend on your stores needs and your managers willingness to schedule what you want 100% of the time

enjoying coffee is a plus in your favor whether anyone admits it or not

Time off has to be put in 28 days in advance. If not then you'd have to talk to your SM about it. Get the teamworks app! Ask for it and they should be able to print out the steps on how to get it.
You can kinds of choose your hours. Give your availability and then your hours will be given within that time frame.
Like someone else said, try and work as much as you can in the beginning, especially in the first 2 weeks with your trainer so you have the greatest chance of retaining all the informations because it is a lot. But don't worry! Have faith in yourself, you got this! Remember to always ask for help if you need it, communication is key!!

You can choose your hours and request availability in the partner hub! I say request availability and request time off ASAP so you have the quickest notice to your manager. In terms of advice, you’ve got this, put your well being first, and remember at the end of the day it’s just coffee :)
