The new pay raise is a joke(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nightkat89
Having new baristas with 0 experience getting paid the same as baristas that have put several years into the company is a slap to the face.
My Sm said “Want a higher wage? Move up.”
Yeah, about that. Same thing is happening to new shifts versus shifts who have worked for the company for years.
Absolutely a joke
lisarista161 points1y ago
I will never ever complain about pay raises that bring someone closer to a living wage. We all deserve to be paid way better for how much we do. That said, as a 16+ yr partner, hearing that experienced baristas’ raise is only 1% more than new partners’ raise makes me think they want us all (2+ yr partners) out. I don’t think the raises for new partners should be any less, because we all deserve more. But tiered raises and performance-based raises should probably be a thing.
I remember when yearly raises were about 3% standard, 4% if in good standing, 5% if consistently rated as going above-and-beyond. That had its own problems, though, as managers often refused to give the highest percentage at all, to keep costs down. Now that it’s out of their hands, perhaps a tiered raise system would be a better idea.
But, think about this, too… The new partners we’re hiring have to learn about 3 to 4 times the recipes I initially had to learn way-back-when, AND with increased volume, less training, and less staffing. Pay up, Starbucks. You’re putting your new staff through HELL.
nightkat89 [OP]44 points1y ago
Please see another comment I made. I believe ALL partners at Starbucks should be paid a living wage, period.
However there needs to be a difference in pay between New hires and people who have put the time in. It’s insulting on both ends when they can’t even gives all baristas 15 minimum,
ashleighbrazell24 points1y ago
that’s literally what her comment said
nightkat89 [OP]-28 points1y ago
Can be taken either way with one of her first lines. I was clarifying.
lisarista21 points1y ago
Oh, I definitely wasn’t trying to imply that you were complaining about pay raises for newbies in general, just saying (maybe not eloquently) that I love that they’re giving semi-decent pay raises to new baristas, while also lamenting the fact that really long term partners’ time has not been very valued.
BeardiesRule1121 points1y ago
It’s hell every single day. I’ve run out of excuses to call out with and I just hope they fire me at this point.
Agartha3369 points1y ago
Don't tear others down. Look up towards those who are paying you pennies in the first place. Everyone deserves better pay.
nightkat89 [OP]71 points1y ago
I’m not tearing others down at all.
I believe those of us who just started should get a living wage and those of us who put time in should get more
jazzysoranio29 points1y ago
Yeah, I don’t think you said anything hurtful about new people. We were all new once and they deserve better pay just like everyone else. But yes, it’s insulting to raise starting rates to the point that new people are making the same as experienced ones. It really is a slap in the face to those who have put in the time. And the new people who are just starting out can look at what’s happening now and think “why would I commit to more than 12 months here if I know it’s not worth it to stay?” And they would be right.
Starbucks is doing this on purpose. They don’t want us to stay. They’re literally trying to push us out any way they can without actually firing us. They’re just slowly taking away any perks of staying little by little just hoping we’ll get the point and excuse ourselves out. Soon they’ll start reducing the increased vacation hours you get the longer you stay. Just watch.
nightkat89 [OP]24 points1y ago
I was just discussing this with another shift today. This method is literally used to force out experienced partners and cycle the work force. It’s about the bottom dollar.
If I wasn’t scared of losing my health benefits I’d say unionize. This is bullshit
jazzysoranio23 points1y ago
Yup, it’s cheaper to just have new baristas all the time rather than paying experienced ones. And new baristas are less likely to put up resistance to anything and are more likely to just go with whatever they’re told to.
nrrfed14 points1y ago
They'll take my 120 hours of vacation time from my cold dead hands.
Right after they poison me with urnex.
jazzysoranio8 points1y ago
Don’t give them ideas
-beam-me-up-6 points1y ago
They literally explained that the veteran baristas should be getting more because they've worked here for longer, how is that even close to tearing others down lmao
FragrantWin943 points1y ago
When I first started at Starbucks- I tried SO HARD. I wanted to impress- I had gotten raises within 3 months at all of my previous jobs, it was kind of my thing to walk in and show them how great I was. When we had meetings with our dm, I was so excited to tell her how great I felt about my performance and how quickly I had learned things. So I told her, I had prepared for this. And I confidently told her that I deserved a raise. She replied “Starbucks doesn’t DO performance based raises. You’ll be evaluated when the time comes” I immediately stopped trying. Do what you can to keep your job- and not make your coworkers work harder.
I left and went to tarbucks and guess what? Got a raise in 3 months.
meloscav10 points1y ago
I left corporate and I’m about to start at a college Starbucks lmao. It’s so bad when the non-corporate stores do better because they have a second company involved.
Angryslugs3 points1y ago
Honestly though. I work in a licensed kiosk and I think it’s so unfair that corporate partners don’t get paid equally.
Accomplished-Claim942 points1y ago
Do you still work at tarbucks, I’m contemplating leaving Starbucks for this exact reason
Razoriya6 points1y ago
Working at tarbucks is much better. You get paid much better and it’s less stressful than an actual starbucks tbh. I also get 2 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch in between for every 8hours I work.
FragrantWin94 points1y ago
I forgot about how awesome the longer more frequent breaks are at tarbucks. Starbucks breaks suck.
BackHarlowRoad1 points1y ago
What is that tarbucks 😃
FragrantWin95 points1y ago
I do! I like it. A lot of times we get left alone-it can get kinda busy and stressful at times but it’s still not as bad as regular bux, where every day was/is a shit show. There are no mobile orders. If you’re not relying on Starbucks insurance I recommend trying it out.
shimmyeatworldpeace29 points1y ago
I am thankful they helped me/are helping me graduate college. After that, it’s crappy we can’t all make enough money to feel appreciated.
Downtown_Asparagus7126 points1y ago
And that is reason I am counting down my days. So unimpressed with Starbucks Corporate
Starbucks management whining they can't find and can't keep people. Well - the ones that have been here for a year, show up on time, work and sweat .... so sorry you need to wait until year 3 or 4.
The cost of training new v. the cost of retaining No brainer.
thatoneblondee18 points1y ago
The irony for me is that Colorado is raising its minimum wage in January… to as much as Starbucks will be paying me with this raise 🤦🏼♀️
nightkat89 [OP]6 points1y ago
Damn that sucks
kqs133 points1y ago
This happened to me 4 years in a row, every time we were supposed to get a raise. You get used to it unfortunately
I_love_stapler13 points1y ago
I agree that its a slap in the face. Starbucks thinks a 2-3-month-old partner is as valuable to the company as a 10-year partner.

Instranet9 points1y ago
This is the main reason I quit
SewOnAndSewForth8 points1y ago
Yeah, it’s very frustrating. As a shift, I’m only getting MAYBE $1 more than new shifts. I’ve been a shift for a few years and am the oldest shift in my store. And I’m getting only $1 more than the new shifts hired a few months ago. And all of my raises have been as a shift as well. Ugh.
(I’m not saying they don’t deserve money as well. We all deserved to get paid more. The raises here are just a freaking joke.)
Very-_-Disappointing8 points1y ago
100% agree. I make starting pay now as someone who has been there for years with no issues on file. What a fucking joke. We should all be paid more in general, but veteran partners should not be making base pay.
haydensidun4 points1y ago
Still not enough to pay the bills
nightkat89 [OP]2 points1y ago
You’re absolutely right
LatterRooster3 points1y ago
This is the exact conversation I had last week. Such a slap. I’m a 281… and someone with 394 gets the same pay as me🤨
nightkat89 [OP]1 points1y ago
Yepppp
Random-Brunette3 points1y ago
Sounds like position dictates the pay, not skill.effort, or time. Someone can sit at the same position with no ambition for years. It's a good way to make sure mediocre is the most prevalent employee management's ever going to see.
jpnotaru153 points1y ago
Why should those who just put in the time be paid more, rather than having pay be based on performance? Some of the people I have worked with who have seniority are actually the worst and have *completely* checked out from their jobs, doing less than the bare minimum and making things harder for everyone around them with their toxic attitudes. I've seen a 17 year old working 4 months perform better than an SSV who has been with the company for seven years. There is no reason why that SSV should get more pay.
Start everyone at the same level and then raise pay on the basis of **merit**, not seniority.
rukittenmerightmeow-1 points1y ago
So they don't get fired? Seniority doesn't necessarily mean your job is safe, especially nowadays. There should be raises based on both...performance and time. There is value in both.
nightkat89 [OP]1 points1y ago
Yeah so it’s completely okay for those that have the time in to get paid the same as a brand new hire? No thanks.
Pay everyone a living wage and those who have put in the time more. Merit wages aren’t a thing currently and their current setup is bullshit
jpnotaru151 points1y ago
My point is that "putting in time" is not enough alone. You need to put in time, and through that experience also perform better in the job and earn better pay. In many cases it just doesn't happen. Sometimes, the complacent are the ones who stick around longest.
There is no reason why someone who is relatively new and performing better in the job should make less than a person who has just has been there a long time but has totally checked out.
nightkat89 [OP]2 points1y ago
There is plenty of reason, such as the literal time and showing up each day.
You can literally give raises on anniversaries while also doing merit raises.
Based on how personally you’re taking this I’m betting you’re at least a 290

Don’t be like OP. We shouldn’t resent eachother for these things. There is nothing wrong with people below getting a pay raise, but yes you should absolutely expect your pay to be raised further as well.
nightkat89 [OP]4 points1y ago
I am OP… you realize that if you even took three seconds to read through my comments that I believe ALL partners, regardless of time invested, should get a living wage? Period.
Partners who have time invested SHOULD be paid more than new hires though. Period.
How is it that hard to comprehend?
depressoroast2 points1y ago
If it makes you feel any better, I’m a tenured partner (11 years) and manager, my raise was bare minimum and my supervisors make nearly as much as me.
nightkat89 [OP]1 points1y ago
Supervisors make 15. How do you make as much as them?
depressoroast2 points1y ago
I’m in Seattle, my highest paid top two shifts make about $26, plus tips and OT.
nightkat89 [OP]2 points1y ago
Ah damn
depressoroast1 points1y ago
Yeah. Trust me I’m happy for them, but it just feels disrespectful for all the work I’ve done during the pandemmy.
kqs131 points1y ago
Wage depends on where you are living too, so it varies from state to state!
nightkat89 [OP]1 points1y ago
True. My wage is lower than some state’s minimum. I’m more annoyed with tenured partners getting paid the same as new hires
nioyakult2 points1y ago
your anger seems to be directed towards new baristas/shifts instead of the billion dollar company. everyone deserves a livable wage and like the other comment there should be a tiered raise system in place cuz why is someone who’s been with starbucks for 15+ years not making 20 something an hour
nightkat89 [OP]2 points1y ago
Read my other comments and stop assuming.
adriansmommy1430 points1y ago
Hey SM here, new hires are not making the same as tenured partners. Tenured SSV’s also make more than newly promoted SSV’s.
kqs133 points1y ago
I only make 30 cents more than a brand new ssv at my store (they were a rehire, not a promotion), and I've been with the company 6 years and a ssv for 2. Doesn't seem fair. I appreciate the raises but I just wish I made more than newbies.
nightkat89 [OP]2 points1y ago
I’d love to see the breakdown because my pay conversation with my SM went as follows:
“Here is your new rate.” *shows 12/hr*
I’m a three year partner.
Also in our market baristas start out at 12 abs shifts start out at 15, so it would be quite hard for a barista to make more. I’m curious what market you’re in.

Y’all will find anything to complain about. I like working for Starbucks and and grateful for a raise. Who cares if new people are making the same as partners who have been here awhile. It’s not like someone who has been a shift for 3 years is doing more work than a new shift. I’ve seen on other comments you said Starbucks health insurance is paying for your life saving medications and your schooling. You won’t find those kids of benefits at other part time jobs so maybe get over it… it’s also a fast food restaurant it’s a job that requires no skills and no experience.
nightkat89 [OP]1 points1y ago
What flavor is the leather tonight? I’m curious.
mgordon14-1 points1y ago
Well then quit if you don't like it. The job market it excellent rn, and you could definitely make more somewhere else. I'm tired of people complaining about "how bad the conditions are". I've worked for sbux for four years, and there's a reason I'm still there. If you don't like it, then shut up and just quit.
nightkat89 [OP]1 points1y ago
Wow. I wish it were that easy my pissed off friend.
You see I have life saving medications that I can afford due to health insurance which happens to be through them.
They are also paying for me to go back to school so eventually I can become less bitter than you and leave the field entirely.
You realize 99% of the people who are commenting agree with me, right? You are the odd duck out here.
Go lick boots elsewhere.
mitcheze-1 points1y ago
want a higher wage? get a different job. Unless you wanna be a manager/corporate, Starbucks should only be a short-term option
