I'm sick with an IBS attack, throwing up from the pain and all that. I let my shift know, and I'm told that I have to find coverage, and the shift sends a pic of the schedule and the phone list. SM also texts me and tells me I MUST find coverage, no ifs ands or buts. Call other stores, blah blah blah.
What angers me is that I know the policy. I'm not responsible for coverage per the handbook. Yet my SM ignores that policy and places the onus on the partner. Of course I can't call her on it, I'd probably get written up for standing up for myself. She's a lovely SM otherwise. I've already texted everyone in my store that's off, and no bites. I hope I don't get in trouble because I can't get it covered.

No. It’s not your responsibility to find coverage (if you’re a barista). It’s a COURTESY to try and find coverage. Your manager is either stupid or lazy or both!

It's their responsibility to find coverage if it's just a regular call out. But OP is sick and when a partner is sick then it becomes the responsibility of the SM to find coverage.

Wait it isn’t? I got written up a few years back for this once.

You don’t have to find coverage if you call in SICK. any other reason, you have to find it.

That makes perfect sense. Wish I had known that before.

Do you have your schedules posted on a long plastic sheet? Cause on the sides of it it even says that if you know you can't make a shift you are responsible for finding coverage. BUT, if you are SICK, as you are in this case, then it is on your SM to find that coverage for you!! Refer her to that. She should not be guilting you when you're sick, she is wrong.

Just call out. If you’re that sick you’re not responsible for finding coverage. I would literally call your store and say I’m not feeling well I’m not coming in and hang up.

When I moved cities last month i transferred to another starbucks, however, my manager scheduled me for a few shifts AFTER my moving date (which I told her several times). When I confronted her about it a week before, she got upset and told me that I had to find coverage for the shifts I couldn’t make because she “didn’t know I was unavailable.” I was so mad. Luckily I found coverage quickly as I had taken several shifts for a bunch of my co-workers. But at the time I didn’t know it was HER responsibility. Turns out she was just lazy.
