why apply for the job if you are incapable of working(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Short-Suit-3374
I work with too many teenage girls that don't listen, can't follow guides, rules or dress code, and think that the green apron makes then *so* cute. Don't get me wrong, I like that as individuals but as my coworkers I am frustrated 🙃 they went through training and yet, its like they never learned.
pettyanon12192 points1y ago
Or they don’t want to learn how to bar or do anything besides window or front count..
groovydoll48 points1y ago
I like people like this.
spongepants1965 points1y ago
Same because I want bar to myself 🤣
The-Great-Shapeshift3 points1y ago
What’s wrong with those positions?
Short-Suit-3374 [OP]32 points1y ago
I think that those positions are boring. Like, I wanna be CS for my 5hr shifts so I can get shit done lol
The-Great-Shapeshift7 points1y ago
I don’t get paid enough to do all that extra stuff but hey, more power to you that you enjoy doing it! We all have our positions we love ❤️
boopsbittie24 points1y ago
It’s not extra when it’s in the job description
rosesandthorns1710 points1y ago
minimum wage=minimum effort
allmailtothethief2 points1y ago
CS is the best position in the store hands down
pettyanon120 points1y ago
Well at my store no one ever wants to grow and learn how to do bar because they’re so scared they’re going to mess up or don’t even put in the effort to TRY and learn but instead just want to stay at window so they purposely avoid it YK? Like it’s part of your job you got hired.
rudebii135 points1y ago
I used to break those kids in on my closing shifts. Nothing like cleaning bathrooms and pulling mats to dissuade anyone of the notion that this job is “cute,” ahahahahahahahahahaha
LilKaySigs46 points1y ago
Tasking is a humbling experience
CasqueeraColdFoam22 points1y ago
My SSV asked a new partner to clean the bathrooms and she said NO. He was like uhhhh okay do some dishes then. I would’ve lost it if I was the shift on
airernie10 points1y ago
Why I could never be a shift. I would have told the partner " that wasn't a request' then wrote their ass up.
melodiic_10 points1y ago
this!! i do this with my green beans, except the one girl who somehow manages to make the floor dirtier by mopping it lmfao. i think maybe i'll try assigning her to do the drains next time i close with her 🤔🤔
Hoax_Pudding_Cup107 points1y ago
My last trainee called me a "fucker" because i wouldn't directly tell her how many shots the drink got. My purpose is to make you confident in knowing recipes, not to be a punching bag but whatever.
-beam-me-up-27 points1y ago
What the heck did she get in trouble??
Hoax_Pudding_Cup42 points1y ago
No, but she did get a stern talking to for vaping in the back.
kikiorangutan12 points1y ago
Pretty much everyone of my coworkers vapes in the back. I hate it.
-beam-me-up-3 points1y ago
Smh some people
philosopher_cat_lady8 points1y ago
Wow.
frenchsilkywilky3 points1y ago
noah fence, but aren’t you, the trainer, there to help her when she doesn’t know stuff? because she’s new and hasn’t made the same drinks 1000x like you have?
considering the amount of conflicting information online about shot and pump amounts, as well as conflicting info from new vs old partners, wouldn’t you want to make sure she knows how to do it right instead of “testing” her?
i would have called you a fucker too tbh, being condescending towards someone asking for help is a fucker move.
E-X-P-A-N-D94 points1y ago
Yeah this is totally my girlfriend. She’s been working at my Starbucks for the past 3 months and has not moved from register the whole time. Then complains she hates the job
LilKaySigs90 points1y ago
I mean I’ve seen people who want to be on any other position besides register but because they’re new and incapable of working a bar on their own the supervisors stick them on register or window, which in turn makes them hate the job. And sometimes they’ll be stuck there for months because the hours they work (probably a peak morning or midday) doesn’t allow them to practice. The best bar partners in my experience always start off in the night shift where they can get the most practice
potatopoisoning32 points1y ago
My last store did almost all the initial onboarding and training at night, even if that wasn’t the person’s final availability, because it was slower and gave them more time to actually train instead of being used as an extra person in a pinch. They’d get an intro to peak near the end, and then they’d go to whatever shift was within their availability. It worked better than trying to train during peak/mid.
cyan_reynolds10 points1y ago
This is really the play, although your manager should be making sure to stack coverage a bit more on the night in this case. I was always frustrated as a shift because most of the time half of my team was green beans, which just put way more work on my plate because I now had to train them AND pick up all the slack myself on top of my own duties. Then the morning crew would complain about things like lids not being stocked in the morning. :(
potatopoisoning9 points1y ago
I definitely prefer when the trainer *and* the trainee are both scheduled as extras rather than the trainer being scheduled as a person on the floor. It’s really difficult to train while also being solely responsible for a position. I always hated shifts where the trainer and/or trainee were not “extra” because it almost always meant that I had to put them in positions most of the time rather than actually let them train. Surprise, this is *not* what training hours are for. I had an SM at one point that either didn’t get it or didn’t care (more likely the latter) and would schedule people training that way so she could use their training hours to pad the labor budget and come in under par so she’d get her bonuses 😑
keskobalt3 points1y ago
Mines the complete opposite bc our nights are so busy and everyone orders 6+ drink on average our mornings tho dead especially weekdays
potatopoisoning3 points1y ago
My first store was a Mallbux (still corporate) and we did most of our training in the AM because our peaks were reversed so we were slow in the morning and then picked up around 3pm and were busy through close (especially on the weekends). It was a very interesting switch moving from that to the second biggest DT store in the district and having normal peaks, although they were even busy later than usual because we were right across the street from a huge hospital so every shift change we’d get a small rush.
rlogranite5 points1y ago
I only want to be on register or cleaning. I hate every other job at sbux. But alas, it's only wishful thinking.
cxbar9 points1y ago
yyyup. well rounded partners are the strongest partners, even if you don’t like the position
drinkliquidclocks58 points1y ago
Mom said they need to get a job and they want money to spend at H&M 😂
NeonCloudAstro36 points1y ago
This is so frustrating as a barista trainer. They never want to pay attention to what I’m teaching them.
IthacanPenny8 points1y ago
I’m a high school math teacher. Yuppppp.
TemplarSensei730 points1y ago
At first, I read the title and was offended for physical “incapable.”
But then, I see you meant work ethics.
In which case, they should be working, not be doing selfies.
mrhammerant16 points1y ago
OMG THE FUCKING SELFIES. PUT THE TIKTOK DOWN.
furyathome3 points1y ago
Do green beans really? I've had some experiences with pretty lazy coworkers but that's just flagrant disrespect lol
Spare_Cauliflower91728 points1y ago
Maybe your manager shouldn’t just hire any of them? They also have a right to fire them if they refuse to learn bar within an appropriate time. I am the only teenager at my store but I do just fine. It’s also your shifts responsibility to get them more out there and put them in positions because training isn’t helpful, being hands on is
shikiP38 points1y ago
Stores are desperate for workers and hiring anyone tbh
Koalastars00919 points1y ago
This is so the new guy they hired. Everything is ok but he started wearing AirPods while working on register. I went ahead and asked if the policies changed that we could do that now. Mostly because I would love to listen to an audio book while working. Of course they said no and he was confronted. He spent the next few days giving me his sassy attitude
Roolita36 points1y ago
AirPods???? On REGISTER?? I’d snatch those bitches right out of his ears stg
Koalastars0095 points1y ago
Yup.. I wish I could have
Lasagan13 points1y ago
Because they are kids who have no idea what they're getting into. Sounds like your SM needs to be more discerning with their hires. Imo a mall or grocery store job is much more suitable for a kid. I was definitely not mature enough for this job at 16-19.
sadilg6 points1y ago
I started on my 17th birthday (yay me) and almost a year later this job has been incredibly draining. I sometimes wish I got a job at a local store or something similar
SnooPredictions5201 points1y ago
I was the first 16yo hire at mine in 4 years (2 years ago), so it seems to be a fair point. But we’ve been hiring younger lately and jeez do I miss SM’s being hesitant about hiring teens.

cxbar10 points1y ago
dude. the last 3 or 4 people to be hired now call out every. single. week. at least twice. You haven’t even worked here two months and now you want to call out of opening shifts? bruh
Short-Suit-3374 [OP]6 points1y ago
One new hire did two days of training then put in her two weeks cause *it's so difficult* 🙄
cxbar5 points1y ago
honestly i’d rather that happen, than work with some whiny brat who doesn’t want to do anything other than reg or warming.
allmailtothethief1 points1y ago
Warming at my store is *hard*. I mean, the only times we have someone on warming is during peak when it's sometimes too much even for our leads, was just wondering if warming was easy at your store? Also its hot because ovens which most people don't like
cauliflowergorl5 points1y ago
good for her though lol
giuseppinameurer8 points1y ago
Some of them don’t even like coffee… yet they work at a cafe and don’t wanna learn how to make it. 😭😭😭
chinfox7 points1y ago
this but my SM
kikuuq5 points1y ago
We have a girl like this at my store I think she's improving, but one thing that really bothered us all was that she would like, not stay even a few minutes late to finish a task she started, or if she saw others struggling she'd be like well im off
Which is, tbf you're off when you're off, but its always at the worst time for the rest of the floor. Let me give an example:
Once it was a 3 part floor during rush with our shift on lunch break. She was on register and I was on bar, of course drowning in drinks, but our shift couldn't push out his break any longer.
He was off the premises to take an important call, when our girl was like oh im off, (literally she set an alarm on her phone) and was like im clocking off :) she still had people on the register, I couldnt take and make either because of mobiles and curbsides
I told her she might have to wait because i legally cant ve alone in the store and she was like well im off now and just straight up walked into the back and clocked off. I had to call my shift during his meeting to come back so he could atleast be in the back of the store
Shit like this man :)
Mr_rhasophy-mew3 points1y ago
We get written up for not following dress code but after our shift we get wear whatever we want(as long it's not inappropriate). Usually I know how to make drinks customers ask but one thing haven't taught me yet is Frappuccinos and some ice shaken drink(due to never having time to train me😒). I took job because I was at need of money, school, and wanted to support a family member but management hasn't been that great or the fact we don't have enough staff to cover some shifts.

Short-Suit-3374 [OP]1 points1y ago
It really is
scarlettmuffin72 points1y ago
What a mood. Ive known lots of people that i liked as a person but would HATE working with/ coming into a shift knowing they had closed the night before. It sucks but its important to remember that you can still like someone and think they need a better work ethic!
xiew2 points1y ago
Sounds like it’s time for them to bar during peak to either force them to learn and move faster or just make them hate it enough to quit. Usually works.
Accurate-Bumblebee142 points1y ago
That's your manager hiring the wrong people tbh.
rio8envy72 points1y ago
At least yours show up and don’t ask for coverage on what are essentially the 2 or 3 days a week they can work. I agree btw. They don’t follow dress code. I don’t really need to see someone in short shorts.
greenbeanfridge1 points1y ago
We have one in highschool that can’t work past 7pm and can only do 3 days a week I’m like, okay what about this says HIRE ME!
official_koda_1 points1y ago
Recently my store has had so many teen girls hired and half the time they just lean against the counter and don’t do anything unless asked
BookDragon19961 points1y ago
Super frustrating and inconvenient for everyone
DannyMae1 points1y ago
Preach 🙄🤦🏻♀️
lleuque_tree1 points1y ago
my store had one girl, she was right down the street, but called SM 10 min before her shift started to tell her she couldn't come?? And we couldn't find a replacement for hours. Safe to say she got fired within 2 weeks of joining Edit: she did this on other days, citing reasons like her father died and her dog died?
sad_days191 points1y ago
This is crazy. I was running the whole shop by myself like 2 weeks after finishing training. I was in a little one in a Fred meyers but still
greenteaforme2211 points1y ago
I mean the aprons probs do make them ✨sooOo cute ✨
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
With baristas like that, I don't bother to criticize them because it's pointless, first of all. Secondly, I got told to stop being "disrespectful" to my coworkers. Anyway, I will tattle on them to my manager, but there's really not much you can do about shitty baristas if you're just a barista yourself. Just hope they get fired, I guess.
Playful-Imagination24 points1y ago
I think that’s such bullshit. As a shift, I highly appreciate baristas that help me police policies. As long as it’s respectfully. And our sm is supportive in this. Before I became a shift, I had a talk with her about some stuff that was going on and she let me know that it’s definitely okay that if I see something, I should say something regardless of position.
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Well, of course, I agree with you, but it seemed to me that my manager's problem was not that I was being disrespectful but that I was simply bothering my coworkers because no one wants to be criticized at work or learn how to do things better or the correct way.
What happened was my manager told me that she saw that I care about Starbucks standards but that she had been told that when I communicated about them to my coworkers that I wasn't being respectful. I was completely confused by this because I had already been fussed at by my coworker and by my shift supervisor for that very same thing--being blunt, not being respectful, etc. So I thought I had stopped communicating in that way or making criticisms left and right. And honestly, the criticisms I was making were important ones. For example, not to pour the coffee while it's brewing. My shift supervisor had said that the type of coffee brewer we have uses extra water to dilute the coffee or something so if you don't wait until it's done brewing, the coffee will be bitter and won't taste good. And to use the correct temperature for the sanitizing solution so it'll actually kill germs. Anyway, my manager then told me that she wanted me to continue upholding standards but that it was important that I do it in a respectful way. I told her, "I don't know how I'm being disrespectful, so I'd rather just stop criticizing my coworkers to prevent this drama in the first place." (I said it in a more formal way, though.) And she was fine with that.
The thing is that not every one of my coworkers gives a shit about Starbucks standards like I do. And I certainly can't make them. And I have to work with them. So I've learned at this job that it's a much better idea to keep my mouth shut than to risk bothering people. I already feel like most of them don't like me, and it's honestly a good idea to not rock the boat when the boat is this really complicated thing with a lot of moving parts that need to function quickly.
