Tips (self.starbucksbaristas)

Do new hires usually get tips? How would I go about collecting them? Im still in my first few weeks of training so I dont want to step on any toes but I havent been told much about the process of receiving them.

Yes, even during training you’re part of tips. In our store, they’re done Tuesday afternoon and are ready either that evening or the next day. There are envelopes that are labeled with names of employees. Tips are counted, put in the envelopes, and then put in the safe.

When you want to get your tips just come into the store, approach a shift or whoever is on front and say “I’m here to get tips, how’re y’all today?” The safe does take 10 minutes to open no matter what. Also consider the time of day; if it’s popping off and the line is around to building, expect a delay. I wouldn’t leave and come back, I’d just expect it to take longer.

Biggest thing I remind partners, tips are money you have already earned. Do not feel any type of way about coming and getting money that is already yours.

Oh no. I was told when I was training that we don't get tips...but I did get a big first tip so maybe they still put it in there? I'm not sure but I'm not too butt hurt considering it was just training lol

Pretty sure that training hours do not fall under tipable hours.
audiob1ood 19 points 1y ago
This is false. Training hours are tippable.

Proof?

I got tips from my store even though I trained at a different store
misslyss231 10 points 1y ago
It’s on the partner hub.

“Proof?”

This isn’t how you prove a point. You’re looking for someone to prove your point for you because, I guess, you can’t do it for yourself. Please don’t do this in the future, it’s annoying and doesn’t make you look good. It also comes off about the same way that I’m coming off now: rude.

They randomly just told me to collect my tips one day (maybe like the second week working?) They should teach you how to log your tips soon too
sh3nan1gans_ 1 points 1y ago
Log your tips? I’m starting Monday so I curious on this
audiob1ood 3 points 1y ago
"Virtual" tips (tips from customers tipping via the App) are added to your paycheck automatically and thus reported to the IRS. Cash tips are NOT reported by Starbucks, so you need to log into MyPartnerInfo every week to report how much you got that week so that your income is accurately reflected to the IRS.
Brownbaristahh 2 points 1y ago
You’re supposed to put the amount in my partner info???? 😳 no one told me that
audiob1ood 1 points 1y ago
Yeah you are. It was part of the weekly update when they first moved to having virtual tips on paychecks (rather than pulling cash from the drawers at the end of each day), and your manager should have ensured that everyone knew how to do it.
haydensidun 3 points 1y ago
All partners get tips, even if you’re new and still in training.

Thank you guys for the feedback!

I'm almost certain that training hours don't fall under tipable hours. If you've worked regular coverage hours though you will get tips, it just depends what kind of shift you've been alloted for.
audiob1ood 7 points 1y ago
Training hours absolutely fall under tippable hours.
kIose -5 points 1y ago
I remember pulling the tip reports and a new barista wasn't on them because they were coded in under training hours.
audiob1ood 4 points 1y ago
I do the tips every week at my store, and have been doing so for 3 years. Every new barista gets tips for their training hours, even for their first sip. I work at a busy drive thru, so I have seen a LOT of new baristas in that time.

We've even had new hires trained at other stores (for our store) and the new barista AND their trainer (from the other store) still got tips from our store because their hours are part of our labor.
audiob1ood 3 points 1y ago
Yeah IDK what that is about, but it's definitely not supposed to be like that. Either your manager did something fucky, or the new barista was using the book to log hours and your manager hadn't updated their timestamps yet - training baristas are DEFINITELY supposed to get tips.
Boundtoloveyou 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, time worked is time paid. That barista would have been due tips. It might have been a glitch, because I don't know that there's is a way in the system to single out specific partners from the tip reports. If you're clocked in you get paid.
Maybe they had to use the book and their hours hadn't been put in yet? Managers can get in trouble for that especially if it results in wage theft...
