Tips on politely reminding a green bean not to pull your stickers/take your drinks? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bjorksbutthole
I’ve had a bit of an issue recently when I’ve been on bar with one (or more) of the green beans at my store trying to pull my stickers without asking or start making my drinks without asking. I get it because we were all new once and wanted to be helpful. However, it really does mess up my sequence and annoys me tbh. Even though I’ve worked here for over half a year, I still want to refine my bar skills. Any tips on how to politely tell a green bean not to do this and to stay on their position? Thanks ;)

“Hi, I appreciate the thought but I really don’t need the help on bar.” If they get upset, that’s on them.

Hey. I appreciate your help but can you please stop pulling my stickers it messed up my sequencing.

Okay so I have a follow up question here—we have an Shift leader who, no matter how many people are staring at us from the lobby for their cafe/mobile drinks, will pull about 50 stickers to get to the single drive through ticket. Then insist that that ticket must be made immediately.
Like I get it, drive times are important. Bullshit, but important. And we have a pretty busy store. We have a constant line in drive from open to close pretty much.
So by her pushing every drive order to the front, throws off my sequencing because I have to stop whatever I’m doing to make her drinks.

How should I ask her to stop? I’ve tried similar ways as mentioned here but she just always says drive is it important, regardless of whether or not we are 30 minutes behind on Mobile orders.

Oh sorry, forgot to mention, all our tickets come out of ONE printer. We have 3. But they come out of one. 🙃

I don't think asking her to stop will be productive, unfortunately.

The less likely to work option would be to frankly (and loudly) state that mobiles are 30 minutes behind, there are too many orders for how many people are barring and it's not fair to the mobile customers to be prioritized behind a fresh drive customer. If that confrontation is uncomfortable, I've sadly told customers, again quite loudly, that they probably would receive faster service through the drive through since that's what we're graded on.

A potential fix that's more likely, but based on your emoji maybe not, is to actually split the tickets??? Like that's what you're supposed to do, she's wasting time manually doing a job the printers will do for her. You're still woefully understaffed, but you can now grab drive whenever it prints or argue for another bar partner.

tbh I'd just talk to your manager, since you've already tried to work with her to find a solution.

We have 2 bars that are supposed to be dedicated to mobile and cafe in the mornings. Our drive bar gets opened only during morning peak if we have enough staff. So there are 2 people doing bar-both pulling from the same machine-she’s simply the DTO. She only ever DTOs. That’s a whole mother issue

Yo. That's a ticket routing issue. Period. There's no reason to have them all coming out of 1 printer when it's so easy to fix. You could even do it from the POS bruv.

Yeah it is. We’ve done everything we can to try to fix it from our point of things PLUS we’ve had people come out and try to fix them. I’m convinced we have trolls living in our store messing with the wires.

Interesting, unless it's a green bean who's still in training and there's multiple drinks to be made at once, then at my store they make sure we know to never take a ticket without asking if they want to help.

(Of course with green beans which includes me the aim on bar is still to make as many of it ourselves but 4 drinks one at a time when you maybe know how to make a single one of those without being told what goes in it? That takes a lot of time and it's just easier to minimize the load at times)

Sorry forgot to add my point: honestly as a green been, I'd say just to tell us to ask before taking tickets and to explain why.

You are right that we feel bad if we are standing there because we are on till for example and have nothing to restock or clean while waiting for a customer, so it also alleviates the pressure if we know you aren't going to mad if we *dont* immediately help either.

We aren't going to know if you are slammed or doing fine on your own very easily till we get more familiar with everyone's pace and stuff.

Just be honest and stand your ground. They probably think they are helping even though they aren’t. Let them know why it is problematic and suggest an alternative thing they can do if they think you need help, like asking me first if I need my cups stickered. If they can’t figure this out tell them to take over you station and go to the bathroom for twenty minutes and find out why they need to stay in routine

Are they usually in another position (register, CS, etc?) and trying to make drinks? You could gently be like “hey, since you’re on CS, could you restock these cups for me?” Or “since you’re on ____, can you [do something that is over near that spot and will keep you busy and not near this]?” As someone who is new (about 1.5 months in), while I was excited to start making drinks, if someone told me something needed to be done somewhere else, especially if you phrased it as “we really need someone to do this,” I would go do that, but also I’m a people pleaser 😂

Find them an appropriate task, annoying sometimes but effective. I have a barista, not green at all, that loves to wander from wherever they should be directly into my way and not doing what they should be in order to "help" me. If they're at POS, I'll thank them for the help but tell them that prepping the next batch of pike/restocking my lids/whatever would be more helpful right now.

It requires more mental labor on your part, but it also trains them out of doing it because it's a very mild reproach packaged with a solution you'd prefer instead. They get to be helpful, you get to not have your space invaded every micro rush.

I would just approach them nicely. “Hey dude Im really happy you want to help I just have bad memory so let me grab some of those stickers for you and I will give you some drinks to work on! Thanks for helping”.

Same 😭

I would kindly ask them to stop, but if they insist on at least pulling the stickers let them know the order you want it in. If they get pissy then just drop what you are doing once they start and let them figure it out
