Forced to work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by good-for-the-soul
So my store will be closed this week during the hours of my shifts, my temp store manager said that I have to work at a neighboring store. I told him if I’m not working at my store, I would rather not work and he said that I have to. Is there policy to back him up? Is he just trying to scare me? I will be contacting PRSC but they’re not open until tomorrow morning

If you don’t go work at that store as scheduled the attendance policy will be enforced the same as if you missed a shift at your home store. If you don’t find coverage it will be considered an absence that will count against you. As previously mentioned by other commenters, you are an employee of Starbucks not just your location.

Im not going to miss a shift, I just want to know the policy that states that I have to go work at shift at a different store if my home store is closed. It seems like this isn’t something they can actually enforce.

The policy is very simple, you work where you are told to work. You can request mileage compensation, you will be paid 56c per mile on difference between travel to your home store and borrow store . They can assign you to a different store for each of your open shift and you do not have a choice

You're an employee, basically you will be borrowed partner. Yes they can have you work at different store

But I’m an employee at my store, which is closed during my shift. Shouldn’t they at least ask before making me go work at a different store?

You're an employee of Starbucks, you work for Starbucks. If they want you to work at different store, that is where you will be working. If you don't work, you don't get paid. If you don't want to work at that store, find coverage.

I’m fine with not getting paid, I’ve told my manager that I don’t need the hours. I don’t see how they can tell me to work at a different location without asking, if I wanted to work at that store I would be employed by that store.

You’re employed at Starbucks not one location specifically. Your store is your home store but just because you’re working somewhere else doesn’t mean anything you still work for Starbucks. They don’t have to ask you if your store is closed if you want to work at a different location. you don’t get to pick and choose or get time off because your store is closed that’s not how it works. Your store closes for an extended period of time you get deployed to another location.

They’re deploying you for the time being. You still have to work it just won’t be at your store. You’ll be a borrowed partner somewhere.

Yes, its a policy. Yes, you have too. They can only provide you with the difference in mileage I believe. To be employed you have to work a minimum amount of hours per week, if your store is closed then that means those hours will have to be done somewhere else.

Are they changing your schedule as well as your store? First of all they may owe you payment for mileage to that strange store. They also cannot change your schedule on short notice

They aren’t changing my schedule, just my store. I will ask for mileage if I have to work there, thank you for reminding me.
