Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

I have a question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Momo-ko_the_Fox
So I used to work at a store where one of the baristas had a really bad allergy to pet dander. Like, if someone had a dog in drive, he would start sneezing his head off in cafe. So I have two cats and a dog at home. All of my clothes, shoes, and belongings have my pets’ hair on them. Evidently, he noticed a stray dog hair on my sleeve and went to the SM about it. I was literally told to keep my work clothes out in the garage and to lint roll all of my clothes before I came to work. I was sitting across from thinking, “okay… do I have to take a shower out in the back yard so I don’t get any pet hair that’s floating around the house on me”? At what point does this become a him problem and not a me problem. Even if did all that, my shoes and bag would still have pet hair and dander on them. Maybe I’m being insensitive, but keeping half of my clothes out in the garage seems like too big of a request.
Kyde_Drakes 228 points 1y ago
I’m going to probably have an unpopular opinion, but that’s a his problem. Nearly everyone has an allergy of some kind. Pets being a larger one. I am allergic to cats, but you know what I do? I take medication for it. It’s not your responsibility to make sure he doesn’t have an allergic reaction.

Now, that being said, if this person was complaining about a deathly allergic reaction, that would be different. Yet you cannot possibly say you should be singled out when I’m sure every other person who goes through your store has a pet.

While you can be ‘nice’ about it and do the lint roller thing, it’s not going do a damn bit of good if they’re SO ALLERGIC. Besides, if they’re so allergic why didn’t they have issues around you before the stray dog hair?
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 67 points 1y ago
You see, evidently he did. He just didn’t know it was me until he saw the dog hair. He just figured it out when he _saw_ the dog hair on me. I’m sure no other employee in that store has pets.

And you’re exactly right. What about the customers who bring their dogs through the drive-thru? Do the have to eff right off because of his allergy? It’s not deadly though. I expressed concern when it was brought up and the manager divulged that it was not a deadly allergy, just distracting and an annoyance for the barista.
Normal_Human_4567 50 points 1y ago
If it was such an issue before but he didn't know who it was, he should have said something earlier. "Hey, I have a really bad pet allergy and someone is setting me off at work. I know it was someone on X shift because I reacted that day. If you have pets could you try to keep them away from your work clothes, thanks guys!"

If nothing was said earlier then it's clearly not a massive issue. It's a shame for him and it must be really horrible getting set off all the time, but expecting you to take action IN YOUR HOME is a bit much. Especially since if you do all that, and then pat a dog on your way to work, it was all entirely pointless in the first place
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 33 points 1y ago
Also, am I supposed to lint roll my underwear? Keep my hair in the garage so it doesn’t get any pet dander on it? I understand that having a bad allergy is super annoying, and feel bad for him, but I have a bad pollen allergy. I suffer all year because I live in a place wear the only seasons are warm and hot. But you done see me complaining to the manager that “someone must have been around pollen recently because my allergies are really acting up today”!
Normal_Human_4567 30 points 1y ago
please the idea of you lint rolling your pants in your birthday suit, in your garage, just to not set this guy off 😂😂
StrawberryElk 18 points 1y ago
Honestly, his request is a bit unrealistic. I have a fuzzy ass dog and a walking floof of a cat that literally makes it her life mission to lay on all of my clothes and weasel her way into the garage. The best I can do is lay them out on the back of a chair and a quick lint rolling.
briannuzzi 3 points 1y ago
that’s definitely a him problem in my opinion. like, I understand he can’t control it and it’s sucks sneezing all the time but like….allergy medicine exists? you can’t just police every employee who has animals in their home? I have one dog and understand that no matter how hard I try there will ALWAYS be lingering fur somewhere on me or my belongings, it’s almost impossible to control. it’s even harder for people who have multiple pets. that’s just kinda something he’s unfortunately gonna have to deal with, I think it’s a ridiculous request to have you lint roll and separate your clothes just for this one person whose life isn’t even in danger

Dude people will find anything to complain about. Tell them to do to a doc if they're that bad off. Starbucks is known for trying to be overly sensitive to people, but it's not your duty to go above and beyond for one person just to be able to serve coffee. I loved every pet that came through the drive thru. Honestly helped boost me through my shifts even if I was allergic to the dogs or cats
Kyde_Drakes 4 points 1y ago
Seeing people’s pets while on DT gives me life.
It_is_Katy 5 points 1y ago
Yeah, OP isn't fighting for the right to eat a cup of peanut butter on their break right next to a coworker with a deadly nut allergy (which, while frustrating, wouldn't be a massive life change). Anyone that has a cat or dog knows how next to impossible it is to keep ALL the hair away.
rio8envy7 4 points 1y ago
I don’t disagree this does sound like a him problem. He should be taking something for his allergies so he doesn’t have this problem. Op is not responsible for keeping their clothes somewhere else and lint rolling their clothes just to accommodate one person. I get it they’re allergic and I feel for them but we all have something we react to and that just seems unreasonable.

Ask them if they’re going to pay you for the minutes you spend lint rolling your clothes lol
brattneybiscuit 95 points 1y ago
And pay for the lint rollers…
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 97 points 1y ago
This was a concern I brought up at the time. How am I going to the lint rolls into my budget. She said “well you do get paid”. Lady, I have more pressing things on my list of expenses than an absurd amount of damn lint rolls to accommodate this guy’s allergy!
sheep_heavenly 61 points 1y ago
He gets paid too, and likely has access to health insurance unless very part time! Claritin is like $10 for a year's supply in my area.

WOAH WOAH WHERE
romansapprentice 83 points 1y ago
The ADA requires REASONABLE accomodations. This isn't reasonable.
craftywoo2 8 points 1y ago
Also, the ADA doesn’t cover allergies. It’s not an established disability.
looker009 66 points 1y ago
There is reasonable request and there is this request. This request is basically unreasonable and he needs to get medication to control his allergy
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 20 points 1y ago
Exactly! I know that there is medication to help with these kind of allergies, so why isn’t _he_ advised to do something?
brattneybiscuit 8 points 1y ago
I completely agree with this. My pets are allowed in all parts of my house and I don’t have a garage, so what would your manager ask me to do. Also, would they be providing the lint roller, because I feel like that’s a bit much of an ask when your fellow partner could be doing something like taking an allergy medicine.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 5 points 1y ago
She would ask you to put your clothes outside, of course!
brattneybiscuit 3 points 1y ago
Dang, you’re right…I might as well go sleep out there too so it doesn’t get in my hair 🙃
Brittany1704 -9 points 1y ago
If it’s that bad he is taking allergy medications. My animal allergies suck - twice a day pills, HEPA purifier at home, and if I have contact with a cat I will have a swollen face.

My dads allergies are severe. Twice a day prescriptions he can’t miss. If he is somewhere that has had a cat - like a friends house - even if the cat is in a different room and it’s been vacuumed he needs to take his emergency allergy medication right away and has 20 minutes to get out before he has a severe reaction. If someone legally is able to have a service animal at his work he would need to leave the office and work remotely until the animal is gone and area cleaned. The pet dander on your clothes would prevent him from being able to work.

How they would work out accommodations is a HR thing to figure out, but there are people who this would be a serious issue for and telling them to just get some allergy meds is making light of a life impacting issue.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 9 points 1y ago
I’m not trying to invalidate his allergies. As someone who suffers from allergies, I understand how annoying it can be. But expecting one employee to essentially map their routine of getting ready for work at their own house is a tall order. I’m likely covered in pet dander just because I live with animals. My car has dander in it because I take my animals to the vet in that car. Am I supposed to get my car’s interior shampooed every time my animals need medical care? There is only so much I can do on my end, and like I’ve said in other replies, what about customers who bring their animals to the store with them. If his allergies are truly as severe as yours are, then he shouldn’t be working somewhere that he’ll be exposed to his allergen multiple times on the daily.
juju483 30 points 1y ago
💯 I would go to corporate. They cannot force you to do something out of your scheduled work hours. Putting part of your clothes out in the garage and changing out there is an unreasonable accomodation for you.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 14 points 1y ago
Luckily I transferred out of that store to one that’s closer to home. And not only do none of coworkers have a problem with my pets, they are thrilled to see my dog when I bring him in for an egg bite! It just really struck me funny that an SM would ask me to go that far out of my way to accommodate someone who could literally just take an allergy pill. It bothers me, because he still works there, so do any green beans with pet that are there now have to accommodate _his_ allergy?
juju483 2 points 1y ago
I'm glad you're out of there and at a better store but yeah that's absolutely far beyond any normal accommodation. I'd understand them maybe asking to lint roll your clothes but as someone with a large dog and a cat, it doesn't get everything.
realnewtgeiszler 13 points 1y ago
Tell his ass to stop being cheap and go get an allergy shot, god damn, why would they ask you to do all of that unnecessary work when he literally shouldn't be working somewhere that allows pets around partners 💀 Go work at Pottery Barn or something if you're that bad off
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 6 points 1y ago
Exactly! Even if I didn’t have pets, customers bring dogs (and even cats) through drive all the time! Are we going make these same demands of our customers? I don’t think so!
Accomplished_Wing685 13 points 1y ago
I work at a store where most of us have animals and i feel this is abosolutly crazy they can make a request but they cant force you do anything at your own home or amything. If you have a allergy take zertex or something before work but you can force someone to do that at their own home.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 7 points 1y ago
At that point, I was _this_ close to just buying this guy a box of a non drowsy allergy pills to take home.
Accomplished_Wing685 6 points 1y ago
They really cant force you to do much at that point its your personally place. If you were in the parkinglot on your 10 petting a dog maybe bc your are on time but its like two seperate things you are home its your own time at work its their time.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Exactly! And what about customers? What are we going to tell them?
“Oh, I’m sorry, but one of our baristas is incredibly allergic to animals, could you leave your dog outside/at home while you order? Thank you!”
Accomplished_Wing685 2 points 1y ago
Ya i wouldnt worry about it but i do carry a lint roller on me bc i have german sherphard he sheds like crazy
philosopher_cat_lady 10 points 1y ago
You know you're getting micromanaged when your manager complains about one dog hair on your shirt.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 6 points 1y ago
This is also the manager who said I need to iron my apron before every shift so it didn’t have any wrinkles. My apron wasn’t wrinkled. It had one crimp in it from being folded in half.
philosopher_cat_lady 2 points 1y ago
Guess you're gonna have to hang your apron up in your car on a hook like it's a goddamn wedding dress

At one point in time, and this way a bad time, I had about 20 cats/kittens. Get your animals fixed, everybody. Anyways, I had a friend and his girlfriend that would like to come over, but his girlfriend was super allergic to cats in particular. She would pet every single one, pop a benadryl and move on with her day. If your coworker can't do that, he needs to learn to deal with his own issues.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 6 points 1y ago
Yeah, unless pet dander causes him to have an anaphylactic reaction, he can take an allergy pill. And if that’s the case, he better be prepared to live in a hazmat suit for the rest of his life!
dogsofwintergaming 5 points 1y ago
Another issue would be that service animals are allowed, so to accommodate his request would mean to tell a customer they cannot accommodate their disability.

Edit: if your SM is saying the lint rolling clothes is required when it isn't officially, they should be buying lint rollers for every partner.

I would just print out the dress code and point out that it says nothing about clothes needing to be lint rolled. That's a wild request, and though I know allergies suck, if you have that severe of an allergy, working with the public is already a huge risk.
Playful-Imagination2 2 points 1y ago
That’s what I was thinking. Like this guy would probably get in trouble if he asked someone with a service animal to leave?
Alefur 5 points 1y ago
Honestly? It's already a problem. It's their allergies that they're living with. Anyone with that severe of allergies to the point to where even a SINGLE hair can cause a reaction should be taking allergy medicine daily to assist with their condition. I have fairly severe allergies when it comes to dogs but I'm not going to chastise my fellow partners with dogs for having dog hair on them. It happens. You shouldn't have to make a new routine or even change part of your lifestyle to make their life easier at work, they should be taking medicine.
maemac 4 points 1y ago
Reminds me of that AITA post where someone asked their neighbors not to get a dog because they were severely allergic, and then were super pissed when the neighbors got a dog anyway.
CriticalSheep 3 points 1y ago
I could be very wrong, but allergies like pet dander are not covered under the ADA and you are not to be expected to accommodate his medical needs if he himself doesn't appear to have them under control. He needs to speak to an allergist if he wants to continue working anywhere in this world. Pets are part of our culture. You are not expected to make extraordinary accommodations for him if he's not willing to also put in the work.

As someone who put in a work accommodation at my store so I would be able to lessen the cross-contamination of the malt powder (I have a severe gluten intolerance and inhaling it gives me full-body hives and stomach problems), you have to speak to a doctor and get a note from them describing what the issue is and send it to HR. They can deny your request if it seems to be too big of an ask or if your issues aren't a protected class, and asking the partners to leave their clothing in the garage and lint roll regularly so they don't bring dander in, seems to be too big of an ask for me, especially if they're not going to supply the lint rollers and will not have a locker room for you to change and keep your clothing so it's completely dander-free.

So basically, it's a him problem. You keep doing you and loving up on that pupper.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I transferred to a store that loves my pupper! Not more than I do, though!
Astraterris 3 points 1y ago
Tell your SM they need to schedule you on different shifts if they must but it’s not your responsibility. That’s a ridiculous request. Also the store could buy a lint roller and maybe ask employees to use it when they arrive or something but that’s about the extent they could ‘enforce’.
ObnoxiousR 3 points 1y ago
I really don't think this is a you problem.
kikuuq 3 points 1y ago
For a gift you should gift him some allergy medicine
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 2 points 1y ago
My gift to him was transferring to a store who loves my pets! They even know my dog’s name, and his favorite treat! They’re popping egg bites in the oven before I even get to the register when I carry him in!
kikuuq 3 points 1y ago
Awww!! How sweet :D i cant imagine the situation you were in before, i have a white pittie and his fur gets everywhere @_@
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I have a toothless 12 year old Chihuahua. His tongue always hangs out because he has no teeth! Watching him scarf down those egg bites is something else! What’s your pittie’s name?
kikuuq 2 points 1y ago
Oh my god!!! He sounds really cute!! I had a chihuahua mix growing up and i think theyre good dogs lol

Mine is named Luka :) what is yours named?
adventurelyfe 3 points 1y ago
It becomes his problem the second you walked In the door.
XSnapCracklePopX 2 points 1y ago
Just remember, you work with food. No one desires to eat/drink things with dog hair in them. I’d be upset because while it’s “just pet hair”, it’s not professional. It’s still a job. I used to work-alongside healthcare professionals that would be covered in pet hair, it’s gross. Keep your pets (and their hair) at home.
RocketGirl425 2 points 1y ago
Aaaaaand who the f* is he?! He could take Benadryl before he comes to work too so I don't understand why you would have to bend backwards for him! Don't change a thing. Ask for a transfer.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I already did. It’s just been running in my mind that there may be green beans there that own pets that may be standing in their garage lint rolling their clothes, when they don’t have to be.
Ok-Bowl4392 2 points 1y ago
Oh we have a barista like this at my store. I got a husky puppy about a month into working at the store and she wasn’t happy. Straight up told me “Well that’s an inconvenience for anyone in the store with pet allergies.” I told her I don’t care it’s my life and my money and my dog is a very good boy. I don’t lint roll my clothes or keep them in a garage, I don’t even have one lol, I just show up as is. My boyfriend has severe allergies to pet dander and guess what we live together and he just take s a pill once a day. Also one hair! One hair! That’s ridiculous.
Honestly if they ask just say you’re doing what they want but you don’t have to actually do any of that.
ProudCartographer7 2 points 1y ago
Listen, this is an issue amongst a few more! Why do we have to change in any way for someone’s else’s ways of life? This is actually a very wide spectrum these days!
Why do we have to change to make the others feel warm and fuzzy!
What about us and our feelings and our way of living and our way of just being?!!!
Only-Pop-142 2 points 1y ago
This kind of dumbassery is why I left Starbucks the first time and left again the second time after a couple months ( it was extra money, I live comfortably off my other job that pays all the bills)
muhkiim 2 points 1y ago
That's his issue. I have cat allergies, and I've had coworkers that had SO MUCH fur and dandruff all over their clothes and stuff. It sucked, but allergy medicine is a thing. I feel like this is asking too much of you
RexFlex420 2 points 1y ago
I would have asked if other partners are going to do the same. I imagine you're not the only one with a pet. It's unfortunate to have allergies but that just seems unreasonable.
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
The audacity of some people. I’ve had to put up with a ton of shit but this is where I would draw the line. Trying to police my life and forcing me to comply with an unreasonable and ridiculous “request”? I swear I would take this shit to corporate.
CountBorn1031 2 points 1y ago
Sounds like bro needs to be kept in a bubble 😭😭

Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, honestly. What am I supposed to do? Lint roll my bra and underwear? Wash my hair with a hose outside before work? At what point does _his_ allergy become _his_ responsibility to control?
Koalastars009 2 points 1y ago
You tried that all that counts :)
zzid2d21 1 points 1y ago
Pet allergies are not caused by the hair themselves but by the protein in the saliva, dander or urine which can be deposited on the animals hair. (source Mayo Clinic) As someone who is "highly allergic" to cats and anaphylactic to chocolate I still managed to work at Sbux without making anyone lint roll their clothes and just left the area when someone else made the mocha in case I accidently inhaled some. I took my EpiPen to work, kept Benadryl in my apron pocket and I take allergy meds year around prescribed my my allergist. I assume that partner HAS an EpiPen? Allergies aren't always as simple as popping a pill, but if you are not doing everything you, as the "patient", to manage them, don't expect everyone around you to jump through hoops either.
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I was told the partner’s allergies weren’t deadly, so he didn’t need an EpiPen. I expressed concern with my SM when it was brought up, and told her all of my clothes are kept in the closet and shaken out before I put them on. Keep in mind this is also the SM that wanted me to iron my apron before each shift when she saw a crimp in my apron from me folding it.
zzid2d21 2 points 1y ago
Harrumph.... Silliness..... I'm glad you transferred.
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago

jy_mee 1 points 1y ago
You should definitely have this conversation documented with PRSC asap! This is an unreasonable accommodation; like so many people have already mentioned, but you want this documented somewhere in case your SM or that partner later complain to you about your attire. That might almost border harassment if this is brought up to you again and with your previous convo with PRSC you are protected from retaliation against you!
Canadiansbux 1 points 1y ago
You can't be the only one in your store with a pet! This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time!
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I know. Based on how I was treated in that store, I have a feeling I was targeted. Thank god I transferred!
gluteactivation 1 points 1y ago
Tell him to buy, or have SB provide an N95 to wear while at work (preferably a real one from 3M, not the knockoff Amazon KN95). A new one every shift so they don’t degrade the fibers. Maybe even eyewear but since the pets aren’t actively around there should be no hair or dander floating around to bother his eyes.

And to take Claritin.
That’s the only realistic accommodation
Momo-ko_the_Fox [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Luckily, I transferred to a store closer to my house. It’s just been bothering me since he still works there, so are other green beans with pets being forced to accommodate him?
