So does anyone actually LIKE the new mark out policy? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by fookyall
I’ve mentioned before that SBUX is just my side job so I only work 2/3 days a week. I personally think the new mark out policy is great! Because I can have more than one mark out per day. This actually saves me money cause before I was using my food mark out for breakfast and buying fast food for lunch. Now, I get a mark out for my first ten, then a panini or something for lunch THEN also take a protein box or something home with me to eat later? I think it’s great, the only thing that kinda sucks I’m not being able to get my mark out from other stores but wtvr I’ll live without my daily Starbucks and just get my full during my shifts. What do y’all think? I feel like overall everyone was upset.

It works for some circumstances but in others not so much. Personally I believe that the new policy hurts those who only works for starbucks because someone may not have an oven or other way of warming a hot breakfast item and that can be a downer if they have to take it home and dont have the resources to get to their home store to warm it up or something. I think the decision to revert to the old drink policy is a bad one considering how many drinks most employees give for free to customers and the fact that starbucks has multiple revenues. I personally feel like its one of those things that make up for our low pay as well.

But like I said it works in some circumstances where starbucks isnt someones sole income or they dont need to rely on these markouts for whatever reason.
rio8envy7 11 points 1y ago
We’re not supposed to be doing that though. There were a bunch of baristas in my district who got caught doing that and they ended up getting fired. They cracked down hard on that in my district because it was such an issue. Your manager can view the list of markouts so they can tell if someone’s abusing it.
sloveniie 16 points 1y ago
But I do know its an issue. Sorry Im on mobile and accidentally hit the post button. At least in my district/store its encouraged to give out free drinks to "make the moment right" for customers for many reasons. Bad managment with no backbone/energy to deal with any conflict is also a rampant I feel which is also another thing Ive noticed where drink or product isnt charged for correctly or given for free. Im not disagreeing with you but its more than partners abusing their markouts imo.
rio8envy7 5 points 1y ago
This is true. I’m sorry I didn’t understand what you meant. I feel like in some circumstances comping a drink isn’t as big a deal as others. Comping a drink because it’s made wrong isn’t as big of a deal as I’m sorry our credit card reader and drive thru are both down and it takes forever to restart the computer. It drives me nuts when I’m on bar and people ring things up incorrectly.
sloveniie 1 points 1y ago
Well I wasnt talking about just using mark outs when refrencing batistas giving out free drinks.
badatlife15 38 points 1y ago
I don’t like the policy, I’m an opener and rarely use my mark out while I’m actually at work. I typically work 4 or 5 hour shifts, so when I’m leaving we’re usually in peak and I don’t want to add to the work to do/get in the way, so I rarely get mine while i’m at work, I use it for later in the day before I go to my other job. But I can see where some might find it convenient. I more just don’t like how they at one point said it was continuing past the beginning of October, but then when the details came out they’re really not keeping it.
RareLingonberry 15 points 1y ago
That’s exactly what they wanted to happen. They know there will be less mark outs now because of how it’s set up which means they can sell that food instead.
miniinovaa 8 points 1y ago
Oh cuz we were running out of food before? Lol idk about your store but mine threw out so much shit at the end of the night. (Sassiness isn’t meant towards you, it’s towards Starbucks logic
hailvy 27 points 1y ago
It’s hitting me hard. I can barely afford rent or basic necessities from working here, and now that I can’t get a mark out on my off days, I’m back to not eating on my off days. Just got a promotion so it’ll help, but I know I’m not the only one that goes hungry…
FfierceLaw 11 points 1y ago
Your first day of the week at work, you can mark out and take all 7 weekly food items. The only issue is that you have to take them each in separate transactions. I marked out two things today for my lunch but I can mark out 5 more things when I leave today, along with my pound of coffee
hailvy 4 points 1y ago
Maybe it’s the store policy then that screws me. We can’t mark out more than two per shift, and one food item a day still isn’t enough food. But I cant expect Starbucks to feed me, that’s ridiculous, so I’m not really blaming them that much..
truecrimeANDchill 4 points 1y ago
This is completely against company policy. Print out the weekly update that explains it and if your leader doesn’t allow you to follow it, call the PRSC. This is a benefit the company is offering and leaders don’t get to say no.
francescugh 23 points 1y ago
what if we all just send hella complaints via partner surveys
SpinachLegal 5 points 1y ago
pls yes

Done

I rarely go to Starbucks on my days off and now I won't feel like I have to. I left a lot of markouts on the table the last year and a half. It'll be mildly disappointing when I take a vacation or something, but for the most part this works out way better for me.
disco_covfefe 15 points 1y ago
food update- good
drink update- bad

IMO
_circuts 1 points 1y ago
Short and sweet, I dig.
chelsthegrinch 8 points 1y ago
I actually like it a lot. I work 5 days a week but only 30 hours, so the 2ish days that I work 8 hours I like the idea of being able to get a snack on my 15 and then a sandwich on my 30. I don’t ever go in on my days off to get food, and rarely do I go to get a drink. Idk about other stores but we have a “partner bin” in the fridge that we keep food in, so if necessary I could mark food out when I am working, place it in the bin, and then come back later and ask for it to be warmed in the oven. But if they are giving us 7 total for the week I really don’t understand why they care if we mark it out while working or during a day off. It also seems like this policy might take away more food from customers. if everyone is marking out all their stuff each monday that’ll definitely cause issues for customers.
XMyshelX 5 points 1y ago
…. Where are you that you get a 15 min break…. Been with the bux 10 years and it’s only a 10 min break I’ve always said it should be a 15 to be a proper break especially if you work a 6 hr shift and get one ten to try to order cook eat and go to the bathroom is nearly impossible
chelsthegrinch 7 points 1y ago
i’m in maryland! I was actually in Texas for my first year and a half and we got 10’s. when they told me to take a 15 on my first day in maryland I was shocked. that extra 5 minutes is definitely helpful, I have enough time to eat a snack and have a quick tall latte or something
_circuts 2 points 1y ago
Oooh queen where in MD I'm tryna Transfer there in a month.
Also real talk I hate the new rule as it pertains to the drinks on days off, but I guess that's what sucking it up is for.
chelsthegrinch 2 points 1y ago
In southern maryland, like 45 minutes south of DC!! I also hate the drink policy, I rarely went on my days off but it was nice to be able to go study and get a free drink when I was off sometimes
throwaway2825272 2 points 1y ago
totally unrelated cause i don’t work there anymore but Target’s Starbucks gets 15 min breaks :)
[deleted] 8 points 1y ago
I don’t mind it. I make breakfast and coffee at home on my days off nowadays. The only problem I have is remembering to keep track of it, since it’s 7 food mark outs a week
ejbailey1995 6 points 1y ago
I no longer work for the siren but I’m curious as to what the new policy is, if anyone doesn’t mind sharing
snowflakenecklace 6 points 1y ago
drink policy is back to what is was (free drinks during your shift, nothing on your off days or before/after your shift, minus the half hour grace period.) seven food markouts a week, but you can only get them on days you work and at your home store.
Ptotw88 5 points 1y ago
I personally don't care about the food thing but it's annoying that I can't get a drink on my day off. I know I don't have a good reason for needing the drink but I'm in college and getting free coffee on the 2 days I don't work really made Starbucks worth it.
LatterRooster 3 points 1y ago
Who actually complained about being frustrated that you didn’t know who was a partner and who wasn’t?! what a bs excuse, lol Starbucks.
The fact that I open and drive 30+ min to get home after my 5 hours in the morning…. Just sucks now. I would religiously clock out get in the car drive 20 min and stop at “my local bux” for my markout and then get on my way to take kids to school and do my morning mom routine… just not worth it now, unless I switch to cold brew…or ask for a transfer 😂Bye bye bye
_circuts 2 points 1y ago
So I was a fresh green been bby barista when the things started happening, from what I understand, there was a not so great tiktok trend that if you like gave the receipt out they could find your partner numbers or something so people were using them to steal barista employees' free drink and food. So it's pretty scummy. Imma have to start scheming now to make my stuff at home.
XSnapCracklePopX 2 points 1y ago
Funny thing, I was a partner five years ago, and asked my shift about this exact thing and she went “yeah they’d only know your number if they knew what that number on the receipt meant…but they’ll likely think it’s a register number or something…” I’m back to being a partner after five years away and am merely laughing that no one caught on to how “dangerous” it could be to have your ID # out in the open… was told I was “overthinking/reacting” because I had issues with people getting receipts with my # on it
LatterRooster 2 points 1y ago
But we have to ask for id or have the partner card on the app—which is not possible to steal unless they have access to your partner account.
LatterRooster 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, I know this happened but that was last year around April/may and then they changed the system to only include the last 4 on the receipt.
LatterRooster 3 points 1y ago
Yup, but we throw away all the food and bistro boxes that don’t get sold… coulda marked it out for a partner and it wouldn’t go to waste. Just watch… our trashes are gonna be full all of a sudden
fookyall [OP] 5 points 1y ago
We take home all the stuff we’re supposed to throw away 🤫
LatterRooster 2 points 1y ago
I try to… we have a few shifts that go by the book. Worked at a store that had a guy each day that came through for cast offs… I didn’t mind that because it was going to someone who needed it… then I found out he was feeding It to his pigs…
shosh_c 3 points 1y ago
I never expected the extra markouts on our days off to be permanent, it was always meant to be a temporary added benefit. I appreciate how many times it was extended, but I’ve been working at Starbucks long enough that I’m used to the using my discount if I want to get a drink on my day off. And I love that (at least for now) we can get 7 food markouts a week. I obviously wouldn’t have complained if they made the extra markouts a permanent benefit, but I never expected that.
FarTie8802 2 points 1y ago
somebody came through the drive thru at my store and used partner numbers yesterday so im just confused.
fookyall [OP] 1 points 1y ago
They’re just supposed to get a discount so it’s on you now
SpinachLegal 2 points 1y ago
what’s changed about it?
Ajskdjurj 2 points 1y ago
I only work 4 days so I get 2 mark outs for 3 shifts then one shift I just use it on my 30.
stealingsight 1 points 1y ago
At least we don’t have to serve our own employees now. I don’t care who it is— the less people the better.
nerdyoats 1 points 1y ago
I don't like the new policy. There are times when i have actually relied on that mark out to eat on days i don't work and i know I'm not the only one with that. The drink mark out is kind of bs but i can see where they are coming from with it. Genuinely, I don't think the new mark out policy will change how people take their mark outs. I think folks will just start taking them under the table. Like the classic: "oops i accidentally opened a dbl smoked bacon when i meant to grab a ham and swiss" kinda thing. Or just straight up not ringing themselves up. That already happens somewhat frequently, but i can definitely see that happening more as a result of that change.

It’s literally the same policy pre covid.
miniinovaa 5 points 1y ago
No it’s not lmao
rio8envy7 3 points 1y ago
How is it different?
miniinovaa 3 points 1y ago
You can mark out 7 food items a week regardless if you work from your own Starbucks
rio8envy7 2 points 1y ago
But you mark them out before you leave the last shift before a day off.
fookyall [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Okay well I didn’t work there pre Covid. Guess I should have specified “new to me”
rio8envy7 1 points 1y ago
The food markout did change. That I was incorrect on.
[deleted] -10 points 1y ago
Honestly I just want you guys to stop talking about it, it’s so damn obnoxious like America is the only country sbuxs gave it too, and it just it’s tone deaf to other baristas. We all worked covid, y’all were the only ones to get it. There’s so much more you guys get that like you just don’t realize.
ukucello 3 points 1y ago
Idk if you realize, but the American min wage is $7.25 an hour. We don't have ANY form of government healthcare, we have very few social safety nets, and unions are almost nonexistent. We got exactly 4,000 dollars from our government for the entirety of COVID, and there were lots of people who needed that money who didn't actually qualify for it. Judging from your comment history, you're Canadian, to which I will say,

"There's so much more you guys get that like you just don't realize"
[deleted] -1 points 1y ago
You’re funny if you some how think we had a lot of help up here, or we have like amazing government healthcare, we don’t ooo I can go to the doctor big deal if I can’t get the medicine they prescribe, teeth busted? That comes out of your pocket, meds, physical therapy, eye doctors you pay that. Our government gave us shit the only ones who really got anything were middle class, most Starbucks workers in my area didn’t qualify for the help offered, we don’t have a union up here, we don’t some how magically have less bills like yea our average pay is more, the average rent here is over a 1000 a month, food, phone, internet all more, transportation more and you cannot have full time from Starbucks here unless you’re a shift or a manager. And as soon as you make more then 500 dollars a month there is no social safety nets left.

But sure go on about how only Americans have it hard. I really wanna hear it from the group that gets free food, and free university when they work for this company, and more. how they’re the most hard done by and the only ones who didn’t have help during covid.
ukucello 3 points 1y ago
Okay so if anything we have it pretty much the same. So why are you mad about the fact that some poor people have a couple more benefits than you, another poor person? NONE of us are getting what we deserve here. ALL of us are exploited by a mega-corporation.

And btw, average rent in America is higher than Canada, and our pay is less. I WISH I paid $1,000 a month.
[deleted] 0 points 1y ago
I don’t care that y’all get it, I’m annoyed that y’all seem to think because you have to do it in one day, or over multiple days of work and put it in a freezer is some how evil, and mean and they’re taking it away from you. You still get 7 food items that’s 7 meals a week 28+ meals a month you don’t have to pay for.
