First sip was... not great?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by blackkmirror
Just had my "first sip" with the SM and he didn't seem into it. I got a free drink and no one really talked to me about coffee. I just kind of sat there awkwardly for a while. The girl I interviewed with was super sweet but the SM I met with when I got there was just... off? He told me he had a ton of conference calls and barely paid attention to me, just like was texting or on the phone, and I just sat there drinking coffee and filling out forms. And he just talked to me about dress code and asked my availability, which I mentioned like 10x in the interview.
I totally understand that store managers are insanely busy and no disrespect to that, but for some reason I just felt like he didn't care at all and I don't feel super excited to start. Is that normal? Am I taking this too personally? lol. I'm a sensitive person for sure, but I just felt like he didn't respect my time and I left feeling bad. And the girls I interviewed with were so welcoming! I'm starting to worry this was a bad idea or something to take the job as barista? Lol I'm doing this as a part time job after my day job to get some cash and thought it would be fun! Not feeling super stoked. Any advice?

Honestly, SMs are like that in my experience. You probably won’t interact with him as much as you think! Pay more attention to getting to know (and getting friendly with) your shift leads. :)

320 here and yeah I'm pretty sure I only got hired cuz my availability was open...I feel like crap and I've been working 2 weeks now. Leave sooner than later so it's not as awkward and wish me luck for when I put my two weeks in

I was hired recently too and I'm sorry your experience was like that. My interview was great--the baristas were really excited to meet me, as was my SM, who sat down with me and talked for a solid half hour. It was just nice and welcoming all around. And I work at a very busy store with a never-ending drive thru line. Everyone has been really welcoming since I started, too. I went in there the other day for drinks for me and my mom and everyone immediately waved and said hi and made jokes. I had only worked 4 shifts so far! My first day, I was shepherded into the back room and greeted with a half dozen smiling baristas and my SM cracking jokes. It's a really fun place, and I know it's a cliche bit of corporate propaganda, but it really feels like a family. My trainer left just the other day (transferred to another store in another state), and a couple people came in on their day off to hang out and say goodbye. One girl actually bought a big pack of cupcakes for everyone.
I really hope your SM was just having an off day and I hope that your other coworkers keep making you feel welcome. I think this sub skews negative and that made me really cautious going in as well, but I think it's really dependent on who you work with and how well you get along with them. I have two friends that are baristas, and when I was thinking about applying, one said "don't do it, you'll want to die" and the other said "do it, it's the best job I've ever had".
Good luck either way, but there are definitely good SMs and great stores out there!!
