Barista test? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by reginaldioz
Hi! Fresh green bean here, i’ve been working for about a month and I saw that I have to be tested on bar? The issue is that I am NEVER on bar. I’ve gotten little to no practice with it. What happens if I don’t do well? Or any tips to do well?

I've been with Sbux over a year and a half and never did that or got that pin 🤣😂

i’ve never been tested on bar and neither have any of my green beans, maybe it’s just my store that’s not doing it?

I was never tested too and I'm only just now remembering that was supposed to be a thing. I feel lawless rn
RoughEvidence 11 points 1y ago
I never got tested as well.

I also have no memory of this

It’s supposed to initially happen with skill checks at end of training. A store focused on partner development will see shift supervisors regularly doing them and handing out refreshers to the team if there is believed to be a gap in routine standards.

I was worried about it when I started but honestly it's not something to worry about. It's basically just to make sure you can steam the milk correctly and follow the bar routine.

thank you!!

i started 4 months ago and have never been tested 🌸 i used to be v afraid of bar but now it is my favorite position !! i would advise getting as much bar time as possible so u can really learn. also if ur on register the right side of the POS system has the key ingredients to the drinks as u ring them up so it can be good to make notes of everything going into the drinks even if ur not on bar 🤍

If your SM follows proper training procedure they need to 'certify' you after you do barista basics.

We're supposed to stand shoulder to shoulder with you and have you make some basic hot drinks (latte ,cappuccino ,americano , etc) then some basic cold drinks (refresher, iced coffee, cold brew, coffee frappuccino, etc), and then a mix of both.

We're supposed to watch you work in routine while sequencing when possible, give you some pointers and then officially certify you and give you your barista pin.

Also, your barista trainer is only supposed to get their trainer bonus after you're certified this way, so we can ensure the quality of their training.

You'll do great! It's all the basics. You can search it on the partner hub if you're nervous, they're classified as 'skill checks' (espresso bar, cold beverage station, sequencing). Good luck!!

thank you so much!!

Wow, I never did this!!! I never even knew about this and I've been with Sbux since March 2020.

So, sadly I feel like most stores just don’t bother with this part of the training. It’s sad because it helps new partners feel more confident in their training and ability when they can pass the basics. Sure they won’t know everything, but they (theoretically) know enough to be useful and get better with practice.
It is an *official* part of the training program as per standard. And yes, your trainers bonus is *supposed* to be tied to *when* you pass.

the thing is i don’t feel more confident in this, i feel scared lmao
potatopoisoning 3 points 1y ago
Generally, in stores that do it, everyone passes eventually. Not everyone passes the first time, and that’s okay.

Ive been here almost 7 months and have never been tested on bar

I got tested at the end of my training on hot and cold bar. But it was more like practice. My trainer just gave me some pointers at the end and asked me to make the same drinks again with the corrections she gave me. Maybe it'll be something similar? Idk.

If you fail Howard Schultz personally appears out of thin air and escorts you out of the building. Kidding nothing will happen to be honest. You could always try asking your manager to have you put on bar 2 more just to get more practice in!
haydensidun 3 points 1y ago
Lmfao what? I’ve never heard of a bar test
briannuzzi 2 points 1y ago
it’s not a test it’s just so they can evaluate how much you know and give you tips on stuff you can improve! just explain to whoever’s evaluating you that you’re never on bar and it’ll be fine!
yikes153 2 points 1y ago
My store only did bar tests for people who weren’t learning despite working there for a while. Though in your case that wouldn’t be fair if you’re not getting bar time anyway. I didn’t learn bar well until I was the only barista there during a huge rush, I’d recommend asking to bar when it’s busy to get practice. I wouldn’t worry about the test in particular, there aren’t really any real consequences if you do “fail”.
Kind_Fox_951 2 points 1y ago
for me only the green bean that was voted by other shifts got tested
jams1015 3 points 1y ago
Wait, what? They just voted to test one green bean, not all? Why?
Kind_Fox_951 1 points 1y ago
i think she was up for barista of the month or whatever
reginaldioz [OP] 2 points 1y ago
so does that mean i’m in trouble? or they think i can’t?
ShannyES 1 points 1y ago
*laughs in I had one 4 hour training shift before I was turned loose on my own*.

I cried a lot on bar. In full view of customers. 🤷🏼‍♀️ but I was alone on the floor so none of my coworkers knew.

I’m still shocked I’m about to hit 3 years. I swear I want to walk out every single shift.

Never heard of a test.

I’ve been here for over a year and I’ve yet to be certified.
pikachu_cookie 1 points 1y ago
I work at a licensed store that was closed bc of covid and they hired almost all new people. I got certified on my 4th day of training, after only two days of practice on bar. I was pretty nervous but it’s super simple and you’ll be fine!
Mayachees 1 points 1y ago
When I was a manager at a licensed store, I actually certified all of my Baristas.
But now that I work at a corporate store I have yet to see anyone get certified.
I also certified people as trainers at my licensed store.
But here I have no idea who is trainer certified besides me and the girl that came over from my licensed store.
🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s supposed to be a thing but they don’t actually do it don’t worry. Management barely has time to do our one-on-one meets so they definitely won’t have time to test every single green bean on bar, so you’re good :)
