I’m pretty sure standard is to wash between every use, and I’ve never seen anyone do otherwise. But on a personal level, I don’t think I’d fine it icky if a store was going through them extremely fast. Say if you keep four out and go through them every day and wash them every other. That’s still 7x fresher than a store that (hypothetically somehow) doesn’t go through it for two weeks.
kcly93 64 points 1y ago
Only problem is without routine you won't find consistency. It could be a month before they get washed if everyone assumes the person before them probably did it.
StrangeBiird 11 points 1y ago
Date dots
esaeklsg 10 points 1y ago
I mean, it’s pretty easy for the routine to be to look at a date dot and go “oh this was made literally today.” If they’re not washing it they should be keeping the same date dot. But yeah, I’m not advocating for this. Just saying that I don’t find it the concept instinctively “icky”.
NotyourangeLbabe 15 points 1y ago
We will definitely cycle through our caramel bottles really quickly, but I still think they should be washed. I wish we just had more bottles but my manager hates “extras”. So we have just enough of everything. Drives me mad.
cush4 3 points 1y ago
That is not considered an extra. 8 bottles should be on hand. Period
NotyourangeLbabe 0 points 1y ago
We have like ten maybe. I just meant we don’t have any waiting in the wings tk be filled usually. They are on the floor and constantly being refilled.
cush4 2 points 1y ago
I’ve been a partner for 15 years and seen old and new caramel bottles never heard of “refilling” on demand. One slug = two clean bottles.

No saving open bag of dripping caramel
cush4 1 points 1y ago
Well someone has missed the customer support routine of throwing a load of dishes in every 30 min. Surely with 10 on hand you could wash 6 by 11am
swollemolle 14 points 1y ago
Everything you touch has microorganisms on it. And every time you touch something, you transfer those things from your hand to the item and vice versa. So, imagine how many hands are touching, squeezing, handling those bottles of caramel sauce. And then when you set them on the counter, more stuff sits on the bottom of the bottle. The point of washing is to remove any potential pathogens on the outside of the bottle. Especially now with COVID, you don't want to mess around and NOT wash stuff.
briannuzzi 4 points 1y ago
but even if they’re going through it fast won’t they just get super sticky and maybe even stop coming out properly? it can also attract bugs, my store has a pretty nasty fruit fly problem right now so we’ve been careful about cleaning everything pretty thoroughly at night
esaeklsg 1 points 1y ago
I mean, see "I've never seen someone do this" so I can't attest to how it will act. But it doesn't seem like it would do so? That sounds like more an issue of the caramel going tacky over time, which I still think would be worse on a single-dose 14 day bottle than a two-dose two-day bottle? Like I don't know that adding more caramel to the bottle makes any of those issues worse. Unless you're saying your store like, completely cleans all the CR bottles and leaves them empty overnight or something.
sailorgrumpycat 42 points 1y ago
After being used, the caramel bottles have been exposed and/or likely in contact with: whipped cream, milk foam, coffee/grounds, syrup, variations in temperature, and have been handled by multiple people, etc.

The shelf life for the product inside bares no impact on the dish itself being exposed to cross contamination, and thus it is always better to err on the side of caution and wash each dish once it has been depleted/used.

You are definitely in the right here.

Edited because my comment needed to *air* out. Typed on mobile, if i had done this on my laptop i would have caught that.
RyusuiJL 4 points 1y ago
*err on the side...

But wholeheartedly agree with everything you said!
MikeyFassbendy 38 points 1y ago
I have never refilled a caramel drizzle bottle without washing it. It’s standard for all containers to be washed when empty and being refilled.
NotyourangeLbabe 7 points 1y ago
Thank you. Glad to know I’m not crazy in my aversion.
medusas-garden 23 points 1y ago
If you’re going through drizzle faster than you can wash the bottles IMO your SM needs to order more bottles
the1noir 6 points 1y ago
Sir.
Yes, yes we do.
Markedsoultheif 18 points 1y ago
We always wash ours when they’re empty. It seems a little gross to refill them because we don’t always use all the ones we make in a day anyways.
potatopoisoning 8 points 1y ago
I was at a store briefly where they would do this with the metal pumps and just switch them to a new tub without washing them. It grossed me out so bad. You are absolutely correct, they should be washed between each refill.
Og_sulver 6 points 1y ago
No, refilled all day and washed at night upon closing
haydensidun 5 points 1y ago
Why wouldn’t you wash them between use…
NotyourangeLbabe 4 points 1y ago
IM SAYIN
haydensidun 5 points 1y ago
It’s the same logic behind rinsing steam pitchers after every use. Sure, maybe you’re making two drinks that both have 2% milk, but you’re still supposed to rinse the pitcher between uses (same goes for shakers, blenders, bar spoons, all that).
bryceofswadia 2 points 1y ago
I’ll admit I sometimes don’t clean the wand after steaming if i’m going to steam the same milk but if you are going to switch milks, you should always rinse/clean.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 1y ago

StrangeBiird 1 points 1y ago
I mean yes, but the rinser for the pitchers is right next to your planted position whereas taking the caramel bottles all the way to the back, opening them, washing them and sanitizing them takes several more steps and there’s not always a CS available
haydensidun 2 points 1y ago
Then do it at the end of the day when everyone is doing closing tasks. I know how manager-y this is gonna sound but there’s no excuse for dishes not to be washed between uses
StrangeBiird 1 points 1y ago
I mean yes, but the steam picture renter is right next to your plan to position where is taking the car on bottles all the way to the back opening them washing them and sanitizing them takes several more steps and there’s not a way to CVS available
lewabwee 4 points 1y ago
I’ve refilled certain things before when we’re really going through it and don’t have time to clean it. It’s not the best habit but when you’re always understaffed and don’t have room for more containers of any kind things are what they are.
Mayachees 3 points 1y ago
I haven’t done this with caramel, but I’ve done it with white mocha/pumpkin/chai when we are understaffed and busy. If we don’t have clean backups pumps, I will dump bottle/carton in there.
I don’t do it often and we go through so much of all of those that a full pump only lasts about 2 -3 hours at my store (if that), so I know it will get washed later that day.
couchpillowmuppet 1 points 1y ago
Y’all have backup pumps? I was just taught they get refilled and then cleaned at the end of the night
mgordon14 4 points 1y ago
If you don't,

vanbibs22 3 points 1y ago
The trays leave your hands silver even after they have been washed
vanbibs22 2 points 1y ago
And YES not washing the caramel bottles is nasty, should go without saying
Mayachees 3 points 1y ago
We wash them every time they are empty before refilling.
StrangeBiird 3 points 1y ago
I will do it if it’s the same day. We don’t always have time in the middle of peak to go to the back and wash something, plus a lot of our bottles have an extra heavy flow so they release caramel at about 4x the rate that they should and we run out quickly. Caramel goes in, it gets sealed, and caramel goes out. I don’t think it’s gross to just put more caramel in and seal it again. As long as it’s within one day.
astivana 3 points 1y ago
This. I don’t do it often, but on occasion we’ll be about to run out and don’t have the time or manpower to wash bottles, so I’ll refill a couple that were made the same day. It’s not ideal, but it works.
clumsycalico 2 points 1y ago
This is my opinion too. This is not ideal and shouldn’t be done if you don’t have to, but sometimes you have to. Like occasionally with lemonade pitchers or something too, if I just ran out on the floor and don’t have a clean pitcher, I’m not going to hold up orders to wash it when it was just made a couple hours ago. But then the pitcher would get washed the next time it was empty because that is the norm. It’s bad that it’s OP’s stores norm to not wash at all.
StrangeBiird 2 points 1y ago
Right. Especially lemonade, strawberry açaí, and sweet cream. We refill with a cube made that morning. I open so I make sure everything gets a new pitcher at least once each day, and I know they get washed and rotated throughout the day as well.

We have a bunch of caramel bottles, but hardly any tops for them. If I see one that is nearly empty, I'll fill it without washing it just because I'm in a hurry and need for find an extra bottle to fill.
lillyloveswriting 2 points 1y ago
At my store we go through them pretty fast. Sometimes we wash them immediately after it’s empty but other times it’s so busy that we just refill them. But they all get washed several times a day depending how busy we get.

BluuBroom 1 points 1y ago
Please wash the dishes lol, they just get gross from everyone touching them and getting splattered with syrup and other things. Like wash everything please, even if it’s not standard it’s too gross to me to leave it.

At my store, as soon as they're empty they get taken to the back to be put on the sink to be taken apart and washed. Only exception, is when we are swamped and must be refilled on the go. However, they will get washed before the day ends.
Kithin7 1 points 1y ago
My store washes them after use. Probably the right thing to do even if you use them quickly.

I think the grey/silver dust you mentioned is just the trays rubbing against the slot making metal dust. It probably is just aluminum dust or something. Idk if it's harmful, but I'd guess not. I wipe a tray if I see it left a mark on my hand.
shikiP 1 points 1y ago
Yes. But I am LS so I have time to wash everything.
NotyourangeLbabe 1 points 1y ago
LS?
shikiP 1 points 1y ago
licensed store, ex inside grocery/target/etc.
NotyourangeLbabe 1 points 1y ago
Ah
bryceofswadia 1 points 1y ago
If you think about it, if they never get washed, there wi ll be expired caramel in there. Nasty.
somewheredaydreaming 1 points 1y ago
This is why I never get coffee except at my home store. Y'all be wildin' out there 👀
Saradigm 1 points 1y ago
I’ve always thought tray residue is the metal of the tray rubbing off on your hands
kortette 1 points 1y ago
I recently had to leave my core store for a licensed one. Here, they literally have two caramel squeeze bottles and refill them when they’re low directly from the slugs which have been open for hours (yuck!) and I don’t think they even get cleaned every night...
drinkliquidclocks 1 points 1y ago
WHAT? that's disgusting yes we WASH them every time 😭
NotyourangeLbabe 1 points 1y ago
Someone please come teach these kids 😭😭😭
Pheebers713 1 points 1y ago
Ok so obviously they need to be washed between each use, and clearly your store needs to order more if your going through them so fast you need to fill them immediately like that. But, my question is, when do they get washed? Like is there a possibility that there is one that actually hasn’t been washed in a month due to this? I really need to know
NotyourangeLbabe 1 points 1y ago
We have a section on the counter where we will leave empty whips, pitchers, syrups and such that need to be taken to the back. When drizzle bottles are out there, partners will move them to the prep area to be refilled. So when I’m on bar, I hoard the empty ones until I have a chance to walk to the back and put them in the sink myself that way CS is forced to wash them. I also take any I see in the prep area that are obviously dirty to the sink. So I know that during MY shifts, they get washed. When I’m not there….heaven help them. I hope somebodh washes them.
cush4 1 points 1y ago
What the. I can’t believe I’m reading this. We ALWAYS use clean containers to restock. Standard is for closing crew to have 6 full bottles prepped, minimum, your store may vary

🤢 refilling is gross Hands touching hands, opening lids and exposing to counter elements yuk
NotyourangeLbabe 2 points 1y ago
They also don’t wash the silver trays on the pastry cart 😭😭
LaReyna1030 1 points 1y ago
Yuuuuck
NotyourangeLbabe 1 points 1y ago
I know 😭
kIose 1 points 1y ago
That's disgusting
NotyourangeLbabe 1 points 1y ago
Yes! It is!
kIose 1 points 1y ago
Just feel like those types of practices less to bottles not getting washed way after 2 weeks.
rio8envy7 1 points 1y ago
Yes
eagle6705 1 points 1y ago
I've always washed them when they are empty, thrown right into the sanitizer.....then again before I do mouth in foot just double check that its not a health thing....buit when I worked the bottles were cleaned when they were emptied.
TyrannicalKitty 1 points 1y ago
My little kiosk, most people wash them after use. Our manager has us date them for one week so they get washed more often, which is mostly unnecessary as I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who waits till their date to wash them.

I do the same with inclusions as well.
deeciphered 1 points 1y ago
We have a cabinet where we have the empty bottles and when we're refilling the bottles we grab the empty ones from there.

When we run out of Caramel syrup in a bottle we'll put it in the bin of dirty dishes and once cleaned we'll put the bottles back in that cabinet so when making more Caramel drizzle bottles there are clean ones to grab.

I think there's probably been a time when I was alone in my store at target where I may have done that but it definitely wasn't a normal thing even there and definitely isn't in the corporate store I'm at now.
rudebii 1 points 1y ago
They should be washed before refilling, just like everything else and your store should have enough bottles that it isn’t an issue.
RaptorClaw27 -2 points 1y ago
You're store is disgusting and they're never going to learn. Transfer, you don't deserve that negativity.
NotyourangeLbabe 1 points 1y ago
This feels like an overcorrection. I love my store and my partners. They just need a few lessons here and there about cutting corners.
