Partner Beverage and Food Perk(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by StrangeBiird
Can we all please write corporate and ask for our daily free food and beverage back? I know it was only implemented for covid, but it’s really nice to go in on my day off and get my $8 latte for free. I feel like if enough partners complain then they’ll bring it back. Do it in your weekly pulse or something.

I see what they’re trying to do with still allowing the free drinks during your shift and the now changed food mark out to multiple items a day during your shift, although you’re only allowed 7 items a week. Some people relied on the food and drink mark out on your day off as a way to eat something if they are struggling to afford food.
OneRoseDark13 points1y ago
so take.. the sandwich.. home.
LeatherTurnip12248 points1y ago
Oh yeah true, lmao didn’t think about that
foxyfit2 points1y ago
See, this is what boggles me. I will be the first person to complain about how this company treats us and pays slave wages but this issue about the food/drink markout seems dumb. I agree with the argument that people are struggling to feed themselves and are relying on that food markout to eat for the day, but with the new rules you are still getting JUST AS MUCH food as before. You can't tell me people were relying on their *drink* markout as a way to feed themselves, "I'm gonna starve if I don't get my mocha frap!"
hobo_treasures9 points1y ago
So how do we mark out several items in a single transaction? To my knowledge I can only use the food markout for 1 item per transaction?
LeatherTurnip12249 points1y ago
It’s not limited to just one food item a day anymore
LeatherTurnip12249 points1y ago
Yeah you can’t mark out more than one item per transaction, but say you got something at the start of your shift than at the end you just need to make sure they are 2 separate transactions

I don’t see why we are fighting each other when the company is screwing is both over and giving us scraps on both ends. Defending the food and drink mark out vs saying pre covid it wasn’t like that anyways so you’ll survive.
Bottom line, we remake and waste so many drinks, they can afford us 1 free drink ontop of the new 7 food mark out weekly. It’s not even about “luxury” it’s about the bare minimum this billion dollar company that makes us run around like chickens with our heads cut off while we tolerate Karen’s left and right, customer abuse/harassment, low wages, working us until we’re sick or completely burnt out mentally and physically etc.
Albeit the food and beverage on off days was temporary, covid isn’t anywhere near passing, we’re still working through the pandemic. Which spurred them to allow the mark outs. Why should we be okay with the sudden flip flop of saying they would push it through October, and then turn around and change it when we start getting paid $12. We can all do better and not be at one another’s throats, they’re watching us fight over the scraps and bones. To say they can afford our free drink is an understatement. We don’t need it, but it’s the bare minimum of “luxury” they can afford us. Considering the shit we go through on this job during the pandemic with people treat customer service workers like dog shit. People need to quit defending this company, be more critical and press them to do better, we deserve better wages and treatment.
miniinovaa7 points1y ago
I strongly believe that food and drink is a necessity and a right to have. And I think it’s bonkers the food industry (or at least the billion dollar corporations) don’t support their employees with food. Maybe if it was a ma and pop shop then I’d excuse it. But Starbucks ? Seriously ? They aren’t losing shit
clumsycalico5 points1y ago
I fully agree with this. I find it extremely insulting that I can’t come by for a coffee on my day off even though I can remake complicated expensive things for customers for free ten times over. Not to mention that we can only get food during our shifts and at our own store now, I really relied on being able to go to a closer one on my days off to feed myself and that option is now gone. Not to mention that I break my back for this company six days a week and get overdrafted on bills every single month because minimum wage is a joke.
new_direction_1 points1y ago
Thank you for articulating this so well. It's not really about a drink a day or what specific benefits we should feel entitled to; it's about the treatment of employees in general, the mixed messaging about working through a pandemic, and the reality of what it costs the company compared to what it means to the employees. They know it costs them next to nothing to do this, but they took it away because they could while keeping wages staggeringly low.
mrcupcake1816 points1y ago
Oh I plan on doing it when they stop for us! As a slightly struggling full time college student, the free coffee and food item really helps!
Update: just came into the store today (Tuesday October 7th) and yup no free things. The bucks cut us off already :(

my store paid $10/hr while every job in the area paid at least $12-15. the only reason i kept the job was bc it was essentially a meal plan. as a college student, the food and drink mark out was a life saver
lisarista4 points1y ago
You literally still have it. I think this is a huge misunderstanding with people. You still get seven food markouts per week, but you have to get it at your home store while you’re on the clock. If you work one day a week, you can mark out all seven food items on different transactions the same day. You can get frozen items so they save, or lunch boxes for the next couple days, or what have you. You have the same amount of food, just only getting the coffee drinks on the days you work.
new_direction_19 points1y ago
Except you don't literally still have it. They made it purposely more complicated and less accessible to get your food market; also, we date our food for two days after it's pulled. If you only work weekends, then that food is out for days - depending on when it was pulled, it could be seven days before you eat it after it was pulled. Sure, you can refreeze it, but it's extra steps and it's not great practice to thaw and refreeze stuff. Also, not everyone has access to a freezer or even a fridge. I know we've probably all eaten things past its date, but a week is beyond pushing it.
And we did completely lose a free drink on our days off. Congrats that you haven't experienced the type of food insecurity where the calories of your free drink becomes your breakfast because it's all you can afford, but it's not as small of a change as you and others make it out to be.
The fact of the matter is that drinks and food items cost a small fraction to make compared to the menu price. Corporate scheduled the change in our markouts for the day raises became effective. It's just a cost cutting measure for a corporation that doesn't need to cut costs, most likely to try a recoup some of the cost of the raises. There's a lot of issues with this company right now, but they did this to deliberately make it harder for us to use markets.
Also, depending on your market, you may have lost money. I work part-time here now (had to cut my hours to get another job to make ends meet) and with the raise, my paycheck goes up less than $40 per two weeks. For a drink that costs $5 after my discount, multiplied by eight days per two weeks not working, I'd breakeven if I paid for my drink. I didn't get a raise. I got money instead of a benefit. In some ways, that's good, but to be frank, when this massive corporation could have afforded both, it's nonsense.
It's not a misunderstanding. We know what they did. We're upset because they took something away from us for their bottom line, when working here is barely tolerable to begin with.

I’m sorry but were you hired during the pandemic or have you just forgotten that Starbucks has operated for several years on just the one food item during your shift and that’s it? (And that we were only offered free drinks during our shifts)
You’re clearly forgetting that we are still offered 7 food items per week which is a step up from what things were pre-Covid. I’m struggling to see how anything is more complicated? And really? Having to refreeze something is too many extra steps for you? That just sounds like an unwillingness to put in effort rather than a negative on the company. I think you’re either not properly articulating how food is pulled or you’re just wrong. Food is dated for either one or two days. The only way it would sit for 7 days before you eat it is because YOU chose to do that. Pastries, bagels, paninis, and such can sit for a couple days and be completely fine.
Complaining about not getting the free drink on your days off is so completely weird to me because it sounds like you guys are completely forgetting the company you signed on for. We only received free drinks on our days off because of Covid. This was implemented as disaster method. Not a new standard. Anyone who is shocked and or surprised has obviously not been paying attention (considering the conversation about these benefits ending has been ongoing since at least last March) or hasn’t been with the company very long. Did y’all really think this was going to last forever??
Edit to add: if you’re only working weekends then I definitely find it incredibly weird that you think you’re entitled to free food and drink items EVERY DAY.
StrangeBiird [OP]7 points1y ago
I started before covid, but I just hoped they would make the decision to keep it. That’s all. We obviously loved it and considering how things are going right now it would make sense to keep it
miniinovaa2 points1y ago
You find it weird that people feel entitled to the basic necessity of food from a multi billion dollar companies that over works and understaffed? THATS what’s weird lmfao
new_direction_-1 points1y ago
I'm not forgetting anything. I was very clear in my comment. Feel free to reread. I don't feel any need to re-address any of your points because I already have.
Keep standing up for corporate, though, I'm sure they notice, they really appreciate it, and love having you on their side. ;)
CharmyFrog5 points1y ago
Your latte is still $8 after your discount? What are you putting in your drink?
StrangeBiird [OP]9 points1y ago
Oh no that wasn’t with the discount. I never got the discounted price because I asked the person to use my beverage anyway. But it was a venti quad soy iced latte with DC, Vanilla and whip.
imboredwassup1 points1y ago
i was never told about the policy changing from my manager and haven’t heard about it outside from reddit, I still get a daily drink and food on my days off and the stores don’t say anything. so like where can i even find this policy change? is it on the starbucks website? cause im gonna continue the free beverage and food on my day off until my manager tells me otherwise cause that’s the perk i was promised when i was hired less than a month ago.
StrangeBiird [OP]2 points1y ago
It was in the weekly update last week or the week before and it ended on Sunday I think. But also don’t stop until you’re told by your manager.
GarbageValuable18882 points1y ago
Weekly update has definitely been read at my store, but radio silence on the topic of free drinks on off days
NotyourangeLbabe-9 points1y ago
I’m honestly surprised to see how many people are complaining about going back to what was always practiced. Like, I get that it was convienent, but I’m sure you’ll live without your $8 latte. I understand the distress when it comes to the food item because I remember times when all I ate was whatever I could get from work. I know some people relied on it for food sometimes. That I truly empathize with. But the outcome I’d like to see to combat that issue is better pay.
lisarista-6 points1y ago
This is the most privileged thing I’ve seen as a partner recently. I’m very dissatisfied with Sbux sometimes, but they’ve kept the food benefit to give partners a free meal or food item for every day of the week. Now we’re upset we can only get our $8 lattes for free on the clock? Luxury. drinks. are. not. essential.
Amazing_Self292914 points1y ago
Privilege is the CEO making 14 million a year and this is how they cutting back cost so he can be properly compensated for his hard work.
NotyourangeLbabe0 points1y ago
Privilege can be seen in various levels. I don’t see the problem with us going back to the status quo of how mark outs work. Why waste time on this battle when we should be constructively focusing on the war for better wages.
NotyourangeLbabe5 points1y ago
I appreciate that Starbucks allows the 7 mark outs a week as a sort of work around for those that do rely on mark outs for food. That’s not to say they can’t do better, they can. But I find it really hard to feel sympathy for someone complaining over an $8 latte that is truly NOT necessary. If it’s caffeine you’re jonesing for because your a parent or student, we still get a free pound of coffee every week! You have access to free caffeine still. This post kind of makes me roll my eyes.
StrangeBiird [OP]3 points1y ago
It’s not necessary but neither is the amount of stress this job can give you.
NotyourangeLbabe2 points1y ago
I don’t see the correlation to be honest. But maybe that’s just me. Like we tell all of our annoying customers, Starbucks is NOT a need, you can make coffee at home (especially since we get a free pound literally every week)
StrangeBiird [OP]2 points1y ago
They’re not essential, but most days I bust my ass trying to race against the clock for a 38 second drive time during peak and I’m available to fill in whenever I’m needed and I go above and beyond my job responsibilities for my coworkers. The least I could get is my free drink on my off days as a thank you for not quitting in this extremely stressful time period.
SegoMyLeggo-1 points1y ago
I lowkey agree. And honestly, being able to grab a couple things to pack for lunch throughout the week works a lot better for me. I can’t always get to a Starbucks for lunch but I can just pack a protein box I grabbed the day before
