Venti rant: Uncomfortable customer interaction TW transphobia + abortion (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by IowaisFake23
There this young woman that comes in every so often. We've always had a friendly experience. Today, things took a turn.
Some background: I'm a non-binary transgender person, I wear my pronoun pin, and have a transgender pride flag as my name tag. Also, our sitting is still closed.
So, today she had to wait for her husband while he was finishing up a job. I didn't say anything to her because it's been advised that only our managers should mention the no seating thing. I was entertaining her small talk and discussions of her kids. Somehow the conversation turned to her not understanding people going by he "when they're obviously a woman." I took it as an educational opportunity and just mentioned how I'm non-binary and my best friend is a transgender man. The customer then goes on to say "I heard in a different store that Starbucks supports abortions." 🙃 I'm also a person who has had abortions and cannot support a pregnancy due to health conditions. It was a lot of emotional labor and i did my best to keep my opinions to myself, but remind her that as a corporation, Starbucks does not have an opinion on such matters. Luckily, my manager finally informed her that she had to leave as our cafe is a grab and go only. 😣 Im lucky I now have coping skills that I feel like I conducted myself properly but, wtf.

i am so sorry you had to go through that, unfortunately although starbucks itself is really good about gender identity, customers are often bitchy. wishing you better shifts ahead!
