you are NEVER required to cover a shift for anyone. your boundaries are important and deserve to be respected, so if you have told yourself that whatever you’re scheduled for is your limit, then that’s it. period. and no one has the right to shame you for that.

Thank you! This is helpful!

yeah, I couldn’t have said it better than that! And you also don’t owe anyone a *reason* for why you can’t cover it. Just say “I’m sorry I can’t cover it” and leave it at that. No one has a right to know the why. And don’t feel guilt for saying no! it’s outside of your boundaries and I’m sure there are plenty of other people who can cover it.

If she calls out a lot already there’s no way in hell she’d cover a shift for you anyway. Say no, tell them you have plans. 🤷🏽♀️

She always complains that nobody ever covers her shifts. But I think it’s because she calls out so frequently

I don’t mean for this to come out as rude, but that is not your problem lol. You shouldn’t feel bad cuz of it
i-am-confusion-very14 points1y ago

not worth it. she probably wouldn't cover any of yours if you needed it lol
kmoonster13 points1y ago
NTA.
She did her job by reaching out. She is compelled to seek coverage, you are not compelled to be that coverage. If no can cover for her, it becomes the manager's problem. Not yours.

Don’t take it. Enjoy your shift. Feel free to say no.

If coverage can’t be found in time, that’s someone else’s fault, not yours. You’re never required to cover a shift if you can’t/don’t want to.

Respectfully, FUCK. THAT. People like this are users and will only take advantage of your kindness once you give even a little. Your time is valuable, and so are your days off for the matter! You're not an asshole for wanting the hours you specifically asked for

Mayyyybe if they offer a trade, I pulled a 10 hour stint today to help cover the back end of one of my other partners shift. They offered immediately to pick up my Saturday, because they saw I was working 8 days straight without a day off. When trades come into play I really feel like it can help you weigh the pros and cons. If you’re working something for nothing other than hours though that’s a big ask from a partner needing coverage.
Also, asking for coverage on your first shift is a little whack. The partner scheduled is someone who can flex as needed. If it is your first day and you hit a peak in a spot you’re not comfortable with that could completely ruin your experience from the jump. Coffee culture is great, baristas that care have forwarded the community and what an industry to be a part in that is always trying to be and do better? There’s no need in getting out of your comfort zone just yet just to make someone happy. Make yourself happy, fall for the culture and rush, then get those hours! Find your rhythm though, and you absolutely will! Give ‘Em Hell

Ew say no

No way f that,
deathbeforedecaf19841 points1y ago
First of all, stay in your comfort zone or other baristas may catch on that you’ll say yes no matter how you actually feel and start taking advantage (take this from a recovering yes man). Second, I manage a licensed store so I don’t know for sure, but since ten hours would put you in to OT your manager might not want that anyways since as I’ve heard Starbucks is being super tight with labor. Seems they’d rather go without that shift entirely than pay overtime

You deserve to have your time for you.
Too many others take advantage of the cover system to pretty much not work during a period of heavy understaffing.
You do you, get your rest, and don’t worry about dinguses who would rather not work in the first place.
