You are not likely to be scheduled in that way. Shifts range from 4-8hrs (barring any call outs or emergency coverage needed)
audiob1ood 16 points 1y ago
Starbucks does allow fulltime work, but no, they will not accomodate a 3/12 schedule. At Starbucks, anything over 8 hours is considered overtime, so you'd be getting paid time and a half beyond that point, which they consider too expensive.
esaeklsg 6 points 1y ago
Is this new or a local law? I left Starbucks semi-recently and had never heard of this.

I had an SS at one point years ago who I think worked 4/10's- but it's very unusual and never guaranteed to have a specific schedule, you often having changing hours week by week, and people can regularly hit "full time" hours but it isn't reliable. To OP I would say in short, no, you can't work that schedule. Not technically disallowed to my knowledge, but not going to happen.

It could be a California thing, but yes, I definitely get OT over 8 hours.
potatopoisoning 8 points 1y ago
In most states I’ve lived in you only get OT if you go over 40 hours in a week, if you work over 8 hours you get an extra break of some sort usually, but not OT pay.
esaeklsg 6 points 1y ago
Sounds like a Cali thing, lol. I don't think either state I've worked in has any auto-OT law for hours in a day.
moon_light523 3 points 1y ago
yeah it is. cali has super strict labor laws and I think that law was made with the assumption that someone was working 5/8hr, so if they worked over 8 hours it would be OT
lewabwee 2 points 1y ago
Oh man, as a supervisor at a store with a lot of call outs who has to ask people to stay late all the time that shit sounds so fucking annoying.
audiob1ood 2 points 1y ago
Depends on the manager (I'm a SSV). My previous manager was obsessed with her bonuses, so she would never approve OT. My current manager is focused on the store experience, so she is always willing to pay OT to employees who will step for her. As a result, it offers a financial incentive for people to stay
Flappadingo 6 points 1y ago
This isn’t true. Anything over 12 is OT.

killerweeee 6 points 1y ago
Anything over 12 is double time in California.

This is relevant to something I’ve been wondering. I plan on applying solely for healthcare benefits. I had to postpone my jaw surgery because lack of insurance coverage at my current job.
What are the chances I could get at least 20 hours a week only working 3-4 days a week?
Pylon-Cam 10 points 1y ago
That sounds pretty likely to me!
killerweeee 2 points 1y ago
Did you feel as if you needed to hide the fact to get a job their? Do the frown on this sort of thing?
Pylon-Cam 2 points 1y ago
I’d recommend telling the store manager during your interview that you want to work 4 days and 30+ hours a week. That way, they can be upfront with you another whether that will work for them or not.

If you don’t tell them, there’s a chance they might hire you only to schedule you 15 or 20 hours a week because they didn’t realize you wanted 30.
killerweeee 1 points 1y ago
Wait I thought 20 was the minimum. 240 hours /(20hrs/week) = 12 weeks right? I don't know if I could do 30 hours a week on top of shift work.

that’s what I work. you’d have like 3 7-8 hour shift, which can be a lot but it’s not too bad

edit: this is what I work so idk what 4 days would work out to be

In my experience the stronger partners will get scheduled for 30 hours a week max. SSVs who have the availability can get 30-40 but I've never heard of anyone getting scheduled for more than 8 hours (although I've had partners end up working 10s to support with coverage). I would say it probably depends on overtime laws and the store manager though.
lizchesley 3 points 1y ago
everyone in this comment section has a different experience from me BUT. hear me out. when i applied, i said 32hours was my max and have been working 40+ hour weeks. a lot people at my store store work full time. keep in mind that we are very high volume and short staffed, so that may be why. but from what i hear most starbucks are short staffed, so it might not be too hard to get full time
cascadebabe 3 points 1y ago
Nobody in this sub will have an answer for you except the actual store manager where you want to work!

Labor laws are different county to county so my advice is to show up in-person and be loud + friendly and tell them what you’re looking for.

A nice, hardworking person who enjoys customer service? Instant hire. They’re ALWAYS hiring.

If you don’t like the answer or the vibe you got from that store manager, just hop over to the next store and try again.
Good luck my friend!
4filth 3 points 1y ago
they will do everything in their power to not give you more than 30 hours a week. this doesn’t sound like a good fit for you
moon_light523 4 points 1y ago
oh? at my store they will give you whatever you have open. when my availability changed cause my classes were done I got like 35 hours a week which wasn’t what I wanted 😂
4filth 1 points 1y ago
god I wish it worked this way at mine. I gave them 24/7 availability my whole first year and some change and even now i’m still available 24/6 and can’t make ends meet because no one below SSV ever gets scheduled for anything over 30
moon_light523 1 points 1y ago
oh wow that’s kinda bullshit. when I was scheduled a lot I had to make my availability what I wanted to work cause the sm and asm would just overwork people even if you told them how many hours you wanted to work
killerweeee 1 points 1y ago
:(
Pylon-Cam 5 points 1y ago
It completely depends on the store! Some I’ve worked at will schedule you 40 hours exactly if you want it.
jackissosick 1 points 1y ago
I've never heard of anybody getting scheduled for a 12 hour shift in the 3.5 years I worked there. It's also extremely hard to consistently get more than 30 hours unless you're a supervisor. And in addition, unless your manager is very good at scheduling and your store has very specific needs, Baristas very rarely get consistent schedules. As far as scheduling, it sounds like a pretty poor fit. Also the pay is mediocre. The biggest plus is benefits and if you work healthcare, you likely have pretty good benefits already.

I have worked at my store for 2 months. When I was hired I told them I was expecting full time, 40 hours a week. My schedule comes out and they give me 22 hours and I have to go to other stores if I want more hours and still don’t get full time. Shifts are also all over the place, one day you start work 12PM then the next you’re there at 6AM. The shifts are all 5.75 hours or less It’s not worth it. I checked my newest schedule and one day they gave me four hours and the next they give me ONE HOUR like wtf wasting my gas to come in for one hour. I found a new job and am putting my two weeks in on Saturday, you’ll be broke asf working here and unless you never want a day off and pick up shifts at stores even farther away.

It depends a bit on your state, but Starbucks tries very hard to avoid overtime. If more than twelve hours in a day is considered overtime in your state, than you will have a very hard time getting more than an 11-11.5 hour shift.
