Storing Tips (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by 5AV1OR
Hi fellow baristas!

So I am my stores designated tip counter or whatever you want to call it. And I have only worked here a few months, and only done tips for about three weeks. My store keeps are tips in these plastic like folder things with seperators, and they are all labeled. However, since COVID and also my hiring here there has been lots of turnover and new hires. In fact I believe we have the most partners in my district at 29. With this the tip folders are now unorganized and running out of room!

So I am here seeking advice/tips or even just for curiousity's sake how everyone else stores there tips! As I am looking for a new/better way to store our tips!

Pastry bags. At our store, we use pastry bags for new hires and them move them to a little accordion folder once they've been around a bit.

Just put each partner's name on a bag and each week add a line for the date, and their tip total. Have them initial receiving their tips there and on the tip log, and retain the bag.

I've heard through the grapevine my store used to use pastry bags but then there was some issue and we switched to the accordion folders (but we have three of the folders and they are a little unorganized and such) but it might be a good idea to start using the pastry bags for new partners with how much hiring and turnover we have had.

Do.... do other stores not keep the tips in the safe? Where are y'all putting not just one, but multiple accordion folders?

Well let me be more specific.

Our tips are stored in a 3-ring binder with each week's tip log. In that binder, in the pocket on the inside of the front cover, are the tip pastry bags for the newer partners. Then we put the small accordion folder with everyone else's tips into the binder and hold it closed with a rubber band. That binder is stored in the safe.

It should also be noted that we're a smaller store. We have 19 partners. And I think we only have that many because 5 of them are minors; so of course they have availability restrictions. And one of the adults only work 2 days a week. If we had all adults without limited availability, we'd probably only have maybe 10-15.

We do keep them in the safe lol. They are like small ones which is why we have 3 but having 3 makes it more disorganized :(

Aaaah yeah that sounds finicky. Yeah, I think the higher volume / more partners stores I've seen all use the pastry bag method. It's still bad for the first day of doing tips, but it empties out as people pick them up at least, and you're not getting the extra bulk from the folders. You can put them in a handlebag or wrap them with a rubberband for organization.

At my store we use these pouches $1 and put the name on the front clear part and the tips inside the bag. Hope this helps! We find it really useful.
