Starbucks barista are humans not robots(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Venussayhi
This week hasn’t been the best for me at all, considering I just ran out of all my medicine and can’t get a refill on my prescription for bipolar disorder and today I was on drive thru register and I felt like I was gonna pass out. So I wasn’t talking in my customer friendly voice today but I tried my best today and had no complaints about my behavior, I gave the drink out to everyone and also food items my day was going good so far until one lady, pull up to the window and asked if we had an pumpkin loaf, I told her we just sold out and I can tell she was mad so she rudely demanded a lemon loaf. I said yes ma’am and ringed her up for a lemon loaf.
I also handed it to her and her drink as well. She handed me her card, and at first it declined. I told her about it and she yelled at me saying it had money and I need to try it again (even tho I tried it three times) at this point I was annoyed and did it for her again this time it worked and as soon as I was gonna apologize telling her our machine was down. She yelled at me saying a I needed to get a new job
Keep in mind I wasn’t rude, I gave her items and I never yelled at her, if anything she was rude to me. I told her sorry and reassuring I wasn’t being rude but I apologize if she think I was.
I have social anxiety and I’m not the best with eye contact but she kept yelling at me to look her in the eye “when she speaking to me” at that point I had enough and asked “if there anything I can get you today” trying to end my interaction with her. She told me to have bless day and I nodded.
I didn’t let that customers ruin the rest of my shift, I try my best to make sure the customer is satisfied with everything but when they are disrespectful after doing everything right for them it’s extremely hard. I think I want to quit considering my mental health isn’t the best right now. But the free therapy and Spotify is keeping me together.
Sorry rambling but how should I feel
Edit: I suffer from bipolar disorder and anxiety so in high stressed situation I don’t tend to do my best. However I try to be nice to everyone

Wowwww I’m sorry you dealt with this. I’m just a relatively obsessed Starbucks customer and I think you guys do great work. I know I could never do your job lol. No one deserves to be treated that way. I appreciate y’all.

Thank you for this comment, I appreciate customer like you and look forward to seeing you guys everyday

All that then “have a blessed day.” Classic.
Venussayhi [OP]22 points1y ago
THIS!! After screaming and berating you, they throw in the good old, have a nice day. Like what??
PandaVike5 points1y ago
Uff. “Have a blessed day” is what I tell feral customers at my main (non-Sbux) job. It’s my own personal code so internally I’m thinking “go away”.
It’s easy to say “don’t let rude people get you down” but, like your title, we’re only human. I hope you get meds and a shift full of iced chais soon.

Fellow bipolar barista here, just wanted to say I see you and I know how awful it is to go off meds, I don't think a lot of people understand how sick that can make you. I'm so sorry you're not able to get your meds right now and I hope that gets resolved quickly. Do whatever you have to do to take care of yourself, that is way more important than anything else. That customer sounds like a miserable person and it sounds to me like you did a great job.
Venussayhi [OP]8 points1y ago
Thank you for being completely understanding of my situations. I hope I get my medicine so I can get back in track

The pharmacy will often give you three days of meds until you're able to resolve your situation.

I cannot believe how rude people are. I'm a relatively infrequent customer (like 1-2 visits a month) who always stumbles into Starbucks having no idea what I want to drink or eat, and the baristas are always so kind, friendly, and helpful. Don't let the turkeys get you down.

The general work strike takes place on October 15th. We deserve more and it’s about time we demand it

Yo how do I get this free therapy?
cryingoverspiltmiIk2 points1y ago
Check the partner hub or the Starbucks website for information on Lyra! You get about 20 virtual therapy visits per year, though the number of visits might be different because of the pandemic

ew the way she said “have a blessed day” 🙄🙄🙄 i hate that. Yes im sure you are definitely a holy person to give your blessings your God must be so proud.

It’s one of the many reasons why I stepped away from religion a lot of people I know who are religious tend to be rude

Fellow bipolar barista here, you didn’t deserve that, you did so good! I hope you get on your medications soon. Until then remember to be gentle with yourself. Call out if you need to, and tell your manager. Also see if they’ll give you an emergency supply of a week’s worth of meds
cryingoverspiltmiIk2 points1y ago
I second the emergency supply advice for your prescription! Most pharmacies should be able to hook you up with a week or at least 3 days’ worth while they contact your doctor to get a refill.
You might have to pay your regular copay in advance, but other than it should totally be do-able for a short-term solution. Also, I know it’s unsolicited, but OP if you need a new doctor to get your new prescription, you might try looking for an outpatient psychiatry clinic near you. If you can find one that’s convenient for you, they usually accept a wider variety of insurance than most individual doctor offices — and they might even have an affordable cash or sliding scale rate too.

I'm proud of you for continuing. Seriously. Sending love.

I suffer from Bipolar, ADHD and OCD. When I was a barista (am an ASM now) interactions and the potential for interactions like this made me avoid working at drive thru stores like the plague (it was easier to avoid them when I was a barista at corporate than it is now). Please know there is never an excuse for someone to treat you like that no matter what your diagnoses are, and to give yourself some grace.
Venussayhi [OP]2 points1y ago
Thank you for this, I’m continuing becoming a better barista more and more everyday despite the customers rudeness
jazzysoranio2 points1y ago
“Is there anything else I can get for you?”
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That is EXACTLY what you should do. Lol. Well done.
😂

You sign up with this thing call Lyra but you have to do it through Starbucks

Feel bad for you man, as someone who has ptsd dealing with a customer like that is hard when you’re having an episode. Good on you for keeping your mood up even after that situation, hope your prescription comes in soon. Have a great rest of your week!
