New barista here, got some Q’s(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by NiteLiteOfficial
how on earth do y’all memorize all the numbers for syrup pumps, espresso shots, matcha powder, etc. and also how do y’all learn all the lingo? i can understand someone asking for a vanilla latte but when they start throwing these code names out i get so lost. is there somewhere online i can find all this info? im coming from another drive thru job so everything else about the job is copy pasted i can do it already perfectly, but memorizing not only the basic formula for drinks, but also all the weird outliers that have a slightly different formula. ugh it’s so overwhelming

This has been an invaluable resource for me: https://www.reddit.com/r/starbucks/comments/p1ik3o/the_last_infographics_i_will_ever_post_leaving/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Be sure to scroll down to the OP's link to their Google Drive, though. The infographic there was updated to correct a few errors. Don't use the one uploaded to Reddit.
The store iPad also has an app on it called "Store Resources" which has a list of all current beverages and how to make them. Spend some time on there during slow periods to study them and practice making drinks when you can (and as long as your store isn't low on drink components!)
You can also make a laminated cheat sheet to keep on you that has a chart with shots and pumps, like the one on the 3rd page of that infographic I linked above. You can just make a simple one in Word or Excel without the images.
Also, someone else in this sub posted that their trainer taught them a handy little tool for hot drink pumps. Most hot drinks have a standard of 2/3/4/5 pumps for Short, Tall, Grande, and Venti. When pumping for the drinks, just say to yourself "short, short, tall, grande, venti", obviously stopping when you get to the size drink you're making. Espresso shots also have a standard of 1/1/2/2 for most drinks. Easy enough to remember.
The harder part is the non-standard builds like the Caramel Macchiato or iced coffee/Cold Brew.
And lastly - rely on your partners! Never be afraid to ask questions! They're your support, and helping each other out is how you all contribute to making the job easier for everyone!

Tbh it becomes muscle memory especially after you’ve been put on bar a few times. You can also use the POS system to see what drink gets what and such. As for code names, yeah that definitely still gets me sometimes and I’ve been working for almost three months haha

This, haha. Before you know it you’ll be doing a crosshatch with every condiment/body wash you use and slinging milk violently into your fridge on the regular

it gets easier, it’s my 3rd week with the company and I think I got it down, I just confirm with the more experienced baristas if I’m ever unsure but I’ll sometimes just find myself just knowing how many pumps and scoops to put and how much milk to pour and what syrups to use for what

Practice. The more you do it the more your body will do it with ease with you hardly thinking. This job is all about muscle memory.
