EDIT: I made it through two hours of my four hour shift before I was nearly throwing up in the back. I've told the store I won't be working until my cast is off but they still seem insistant I try. if anyone has a hr contact for the UK stores please let me know as I've been told to wait for one
hello friends, Starbucks UK here, just here for a big old rant
I'm not sure if I'm just being entitled and whiney but I broke my arm last week and have subsequently had my thumb immobilised. I had a 5am shift the next day so called my store and let them know that I potentially had a broken arm and would most likely not be coming to work in the morning. they said this was fine and then about an hour later I got a call from the store manager telling me that if it wasn't broken I'd have to come in the next day, and that I had to be careful because I'm still on probation and this would be my third sick period (one of them was an isolation which I was told doesn't count at interview and induction). this doesn't bother me too much. I'd get my taxes back.
obviously I had in fact broken the bone and was told by the nurse in A&E that I shouldn't be working. sm told me that they say that to protect their own asses in case anything gets worse. let me reiterate, I have broken my arm and have absolutely zero use of my thumb. even opening doors right now causes me pain. I'm also a university student and haven't been able to go back into class (I'm lucky enough to have in person sessions) because of anxiety this has caused me. my sm knows this but is still scheduling me to work, even after telling me that I shouldn't be working if I can't fulfil my role properly (I can't. I don't have a damn thumb. idk if you've tried holding absolutely anything without using your thumb but it's hard)
I'm currently on my way to my first shift after the break and I'm SEETHING because I know I'm going to come out of these 4 hours in absolute pain just so I can prove to them that I can't work for the foreseeable. I don't think it's worth it. I feel like the cast on my arm should be proof enough that I can't work. there's also a barista that's just come off sick leave after a broken arm and I'm confused as to why he got said sick leave and I am being put through hoops to prove I need it
sorry if this screams boohoo I'm injured and don't want to work. I know people do shit with worse injuries but I'm just ✨tired✨ of being pushed around by my management
