Opener doesn’t show up? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TheFriendlyFeminist
So I’m sort of a new SSV and I’ve never had this happen to me. My opener isn’t here and I can’t get a hold of them. Can’t get a hold of my manager or the next person who’s supposed to come in next in an hour lol. Obviously I can’t go in the store, but does anyone have any advice? I just chill and we open during peak and have the worst morning ever? 😅

Pretty much! This has happened to us several times this summer. The best part is the dozens of mobile orders piling up in the queue with no one there to make them 🤡

So yea, we opened an hour late and it’s been the worst morning ever. Wish I saw this comment about mobiles before going in and seeing that mess.

In the future you can start calling around and seeing if anyone can come in. If the original opener eventually shows up you can give the person covering a choice to leave or you tell the opener sorry you got their shift covered. I've also had someone currently working at another store who could spare them come in for an hour or two just to open until the next person got on. You can at least get opening tasks out of the way.

Can also call the DM. They can at least turn off mobiles if not get you coverage.

Thanks for the tips! Mobiles did end up getting turned off but it’s definitely been one of the worst mornings

I never get why people don't get fired for this. Not that not showing up for afternoon shifts is any better then opening but opening is the biggest deal for showing up...its so frustrating when no call no shows happen

Make sure you write your own start time in the book for the time you were meant to be in the store. You get paid for that time even though you couldn't go in.

I got to the point where I had my usual opening routine and also a set, solid "get ready to open in 10 mins or less" routine, which I feel is fairly impressive, tbh, but always led to a cranky, crappy morning.

Thanks for this! I would say crappy and cranky is about exactly how it’s been. Thankfully got my DM to turn off mobile orders eventually

There’s definitely a point where if my opener/s were late enough I wouldn’t even rush opening. If it’s at the point where customers are going to he regularly coming in, you bet I’m taking 30 minutes to get everything I can prepped before adding that on top.

I also call another store in the neighborhood and ask if I can borrow someone till the next person shows up

2 day update: it happened again, this time I had two openers and they both called out 😂😂

You guys are busy close to open and you only have the SSV and one barista? A nightmare. From one opener to another, I'm sorry this happened to you and I do not envy you :(
