Unpopular Opinion: Starbucks actually sucks to work for (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by pls_stopit
I just quit after being there for a year. I used to think it was the best job I ever had, but thinking back I realized I only liked being there because of my team, and this summer things really took to a turn for the worse and uncovered a huge amount of red flags. The job is stressful and extremely high pressure, the customers are stupid and rude, all levels of management sucked and didn’t know what they were doing, and personally I don’t think the way this company treats its employees lined up with their alleged “values.” This was across three different stores and two different districts btw, all the same. So many people either quit or got fired from my last store that they’re going to be drastically understaffed for the foreseeable future that I don’t even know how they’re going to continue to run. But whatever it’s not my problem anymore. Now I have a warehousing job making 3x monthly what I made at Sbux

EDIT: ok so apparently this isn’t an unpopular opinion lmao. But I know my experience isn’t unique, and if this post saves even one person from being used and abused by this godforsaken company, it will have served its purpose well.

definitely not an unpopular opinion on this sub! every day is a never ending nightmare working for the siren <3

This is a very popular opinion. I have never felt like crying looking at a paycheck until the one I got today was only $30 more than my rent. I work full time near 40 hours every week not to mention I can’t rely on my job to eat a meal anymore when I’m not working. I’m tired and angry and $12 an hour isn’t going to change anything for the better.

do you really think this is an unpopular opinion? i feel like the majority of sbux baristas are feeling like this rn. i’m glad you were able to find something else! i also left for a different job (different coffee shop), and it’s really one of the best decisions i’ve made

October 15th is the general work strike in America. They can’t fire you for striking. Know your options

I’m afraid this isn’t true. You might have protections based on the labor laws in your state, say, if you called out sick, but most U.S. states are “at will employers”, which means that they can fire you “just because” at any time.

But if we all do it…

I don’t even look at my paycheck. Luckily I have some cushion to fall back on and Sbux is just the job right now to get out of the house and acclimate to other humans again. Today I went to pick up tips for a store I filled in at, 2 shifts, on the weekend, 3 dollars in tips. I spent that driving over there. I was hired 6 weeks ago with 2 others. Both quit within the week. As did the manager who hired me. I have one apron and had to buy my own hat. I do love the art of making coffee, and coffee itself, and have already come to love all my partners. Bought concert tickets a month ago, my girl Regi picked up my 5:45 am shift for me. My girl Patti has to take her husband to the oncologist next week (he’s doing okay after treatment, just a follow-up) so I picked up her opening shift. I guess the free Spotify saves me 10 bucks a month. The parter drinks on shift help (I leave with a carrier everyday) as I was developing an expensive nitro cold brew habit - y’all, that shit is like 6 dollars for a medium! But like 65 calories and packed with caffeine. However, none of this makes up for not being paid a livable wage. I am making exactly the same amount of money I did 20 years ago at Dunkin’ Donuts. And I never even had to make a latte. 20 years ago! It’s so wrong. It’s not right. It’s not okay. We need to strike today.

Edited for grammar

So I just finished my 3 days of training on Saturday and my first day is tmr. I’m thinking about not showing back up. The environment is stressful, my trainer was extremely rude
pls_stopit [OP] 1 points 1y ago
On top of that, they refused to give me the hours that I needed, I was making maybe $100-200 more than my rent per month. Selling plasma just to pay for groceries. All while working for a company that claims to “inspire and nurture the human spirit”
melmcdaniel 1 points 1y ago
I didn’t show back up or give them a two weeks notice. I was thinking what is the point of giving a two weeks that would require more training with coworkers who are standoffish and rude. It would be a waste of my time and theirs. The store I was at doesn’t have a SM and a ssv is running the store and it is a shit show!! My last training day they ran out of every single food item that they have to offer besides chocolate croissants. The ssv kept saying oh the turnover rate is really bad and we are so short staffed… well i wonder why
pls_stopit [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Honestly, don’t. Personally I’d find another job asap. There are way less stressful jobs that pay way better. Leaving Starbucks was one of the best decisions I ever made. This company is a shell of what it once was.

I’m out now that we don’t get food and drink on days off. Just waiting for my bean stock to be vested is 23 days!

Not unpopular opinion and I'm realizing the nightmare working there...i started working there in August. I have already decided to quit since I had injured my ankle from getting pastry and sandwich in the freezer in chain company that starbucks has merge with. The chain company pretty much blame me for not being trained on moving ice pallets (they were supposed to train me)that was blocking the starsbucks sandwiches and pastry in the freezer. I'm still absolutely livid about getting written up for slipping in that freezer just to climb over to get stuff for the kiosk. People I work with are nice but I can't work for a company that isn't liable for terrible management and training.
