Yeah it’s not a health hazard. As long as it’s not with blood or feces there is risk of contagions. It’s an unfortunate situation but your mangers are right.
losteyesee9 points1y ago
How is it not hazardous though, what if some splashed In my eye or something? No one knows the health background of some random homeless guy, and urine isn't sterile, either way we aren't really equipped to deal with that much urine.
supr_cooper10 points1y ago
In the mylearning it states that it is not a hazardous material as long as it’s not contaminated with blood. The cdc states the same thing as well. No significantly harmful contagions are trasmitted through urine.
dallizzlee7 points1y ago
I’ve always been taught to treat all bodily fluids as if they were contaminated with blood. I’m new to Starbucks but previously worked in education and this was protocol for all fluids.
Aurora_Boreallis5 points1y ago
How are you to know there aren’t traces of blood in said urine?
supr_cooper7 points1y ago
I’m not discounting that. But both Starbucks and OSHA say that there is nothing wrong with having employees clean urine. I’m not saying that I think it shouldn’t be considered hazardous I’m just saying that as of right now it isn’t considered and her managers are correct.
losteyesee5 points1y ago
Exactly. I don't want to risk my health (mental and physical) and be put in a situation where I need to pick my health or my job because they don't want to call it in
dazedandconfusedhere8 points1y ago
It’s not a hazard but you have the right to refuse it if it makes you uncomfortable (just like we can refuse to use certain chemicals)
JBlittz5 points1y ago
I thought any bodily fluids were a health hazard.
losteyesee4 points1y ago
They said it was sterile and completely disregarded our concerns and threatened a write up.
losteyesee2 points1y ago
The man was also coughing A LOT and showing signs of covid(not wearing a mask either). Made no difference to them.
JBlittz1 points1y ago
Sounds like they didn’t want to pay for the extra for the right people to clean it.
LilacFlores4 points1y ago
In training it says you dont have to do anything you aren’t comfortable with. So let them know you wont do it and the manager can go ahead and do it since its sooo safe
GerbilFeces3 points1y ago
A gallon of pee :>
losteyesee3 points1y ago
It was a ridiculous amount:]
kmoonster2 points1y ago
Urine is typically sterile (as far as biohazards go). Still gross, though, and the odds that something else nasty IS there is pretty good.
Poo and blood (and spit) are something else entirely.

This is not exactly an owner-operated place running a dollar short every month and struggling at that, is there really not some contractor they have on call to handle this type of thing in your district?
losteyesee1 points1y ago
There is, the supervisor called it in and was told to cancel it by the manager. It was a closing shift so they had no choice but to let biohazard come in or make the openers deal with it because the other batista and I said we where uncomfortable.
beccaboo2u2 points1y ago
I would walk out before I ever did that.
rio8envy72 points1y ago
No. You shouldn’t be forced to clean up urine if you’re not comfortable. I’m pretty sure bodily fluids is a biohazard.
jml77911 points1y ago
Idk why people always say urine is sterile. It’s not. This fact is easily Google-able.
losteyesee2 points1y ago
Like.. you can get sick from pee, we're literally in a pandemic and covid can be passed through bodily fluids. There's these outdated ass rules putting workers in danger.
paigemclachlan1 points1y ago
We do not get paid enough to clean up pee with a mop and bucket 😭😭
