Coffee with steamed milk or café misto? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by jy_mee
Questions:
How much milk are we allowed for give customers for free? I was under the impression it was 4oz.

What about when customers ask for extra cream?
What's that rule?

Situation:
I had a customer walk into cafe and ask for a grande coffee in a venti cup with extra cream steamed in the coffee. I steamed just under the short line but left 1/2inch room off the top because in theory wouldn't we leave room in a grande cup for the cream, even more room for the extra cream? So it's less coffee and more cream? And wouldn't it at this point turn the whole drink into a café misto?

He yelled at me, threatened me, I let him know I could fix it but the grown man completely lost it. I was scared he was going to throw the coffee at me. Am I wrong? What could I have done different?

Well since a grande is 16oz and a venti is 20oz for hot, the rule of 4oz for no charge would apply. I think you’re thinking *way* too hard about it with the whole leaving room for cream in a grande part. Which 4oz is the most we can give before charging, yes.

Yea it’s just probably a hack ,or this guy just really likes more cream than coffee ( which a lot of beginner coffee drinkers do). And yes it definitely sounds like a breve cafe misto, you can ask your store manager how to charge for that /whether they mind in this situation. Sometimes they don’t care, because for every Frank that does this, there’s a lot more serious coffee drinkers (lol), those just drinking it black, that don’t use the milk/cream option at all, so their costs may even out. But again , just check with your manager to see if they care about it, and how to charge for that if the breve button isn’t an optional extra charge on drip coffee ( I can’t recall)
