Tired of 5.5 Hour Shifts (Mini Rant) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by matchawaffles
Hello all, college green bean here! I started with the Siren back at the end of August after my move to my grandfather's house. Since I'm in college, I work part-time, however, I'm super tired of only getting 5.5 hour shifts. I get that it's the exact same as a 6-hour shift with the 30-minute unpaid lunch, but I'd much rather be able to have that lunch for some reason. It's not too much of a big thing for me to go to a shift or SM, but it still slightly annoys me. I will say, it is SO much better than my hours at Dunkin Donuts. I was working Saturday 7-3. That's it. 8 hours a week. So believe me, I'd much rather have my 20 hours, but it is ever so slightly annoying.

When I worked at the Bux I was almost always scheduled for 5.75 hour shifts 🤦‍♀️ (Edit: located in GA where we only get a paid 10 + unpaid 30 if we worked at least 6 hrs, otherwise just a paid 10)

Most of my shifts are 5.75 hours. That's capitalism, baby
matchawaffles [OP] 23 points 1y ago
that is unfortunate. they're just like "yeah let's have them work only 5 hours and 45 minutes because that makes sense"
cfuqua 2 points 1y ago
do you not understand why it's done that way?
SuperFineFeline 3 points 1y ago
So we only get one 10 minute break vs 2 of them once we hit 6 hours?
matchawaffles [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I don't, happy cake day btw
[deleted] 20 points 1y ago
With one ten minute break. It was stupid af and not even worth taking the ten.
irlKC 4 points 1y ago
good luck even getting the 10 at some stores
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
I never got my breaks and one shift was so freaking lazy. They’d give themselves breaks but ignore the rest of us.
streakystronky 1 points 1y ago
That’s what I’m scheduled now 😒
SuperFineFeline 1 points 1y ago
Same

I work 5.5 hours every shift but then i have to end up staying late and work over 6 hours…. I never get my lunch lmao
guavalemonades 35 points 1y ago
If you're hitting 6 hours and they don't give you lunch thats extremely against policy. Tell your sm if they're unaware, if not call partner resources. Corporate is extremely serious about 30s.
matchawaffles [OP] 25 points 1y ago
if they tell you to stay past ur 5.5, then you definitely need a lunch!
_abbycadabby_ 3 points 1y ago
Yuuuup! When I'm asked this (or asked to come in early), I say in a cheerful tone, "Sure! Just make sure to add my lunch to the DCR 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰"
radpandaparty 22 points 1y ago
That's what we call

Sometimes my manager get will schedule me 4-9am and then schedule a separate shift the same day at 9:15- 12pm so i don’t have to take a lunch😀
b0gw1tch 11 points 1y ago
What! That's super against policy! You're not supposed to be scheduled for another shift for at least 8 hours!!
radpandaparty 6 points 1y ago
Yeah y'all need to tell the DM because that is fucked
sero5074 7 points 1y ago
Excuse me w h a t
irlKC 1 points 1y ago
same here, I always close and it takes us awhile so I’ll end up hitting 6.5 hours sometimes with no lunch. takes a lot out of you
wildaloofrebel55 31 points 1y ago
We get a lunch when we go over 5 hours!
matchawaffles [OP] 29 points 1y ago
must be nice, I'm in Texas so it's lucky I get a 10 at all considering how awful the labor laws here are
Crowchick1731 25 points 1y ago
Not in the US, and I think its only if you're a minor anyways. Regularly you get a ten and a lunch at 6 hours. At 6.5 two 10s and a lunch.
apracticalman 19 points 1y ago
It varies by state. In Colorado and others you get a lunch at 5 hours.
Crowchick1731 4 points 1y ago
I actually didn't know my apologies. I've worked in several Midwest states and it's always been the same
clumsycalico 1 points 1y ago
Ooooh thanks for sharing this. I always read it was 6 and always got a happy surprise when I got a lunch on 5hr shifts
cancel94 5 points 1y ago
Not true, in CA it's if you work 5 hours or more
Alefur 3 points 1y ago
For us we get a 10 past 4 hours, a lunch past 6, then another 10 if we work 8+
ryannmm5 2 points 1y ago
i’m in illinois & only 16 and it’s still 6 hours before you get a lunch
Crowchick1731 2 points 1y ago
Also IL (currently) that's what I thought
Brownbaristahh 14 points 1y ago
At my store everyone only gets scheduled for 4-4.5 hours so none of us get lunches. It’s annoying I wish I was scheduled more so I don’t have to around looking for shifts to cover.
Roarkshop 10 points 1y ago
Personally I love a 5.5 shift with no big break because when I sit down for a long time it just saps my energy. But if you prefer a shift with a break talk to your manager about it and see what they say. Asking can't hurt.

My last name is Roark and it's a play on workshop lol.

In Canada we have 4.75 hour shifts with 1 - 15 minute break. If you have a 5 hour shift or more, you have a 30. So a 5.75 would have a 15 and a 30.
_abbycadabby_ 3 points 1y ago
Bro. I'm so jealous. I love Canada 🥺
Zeus1027 3 points 1y ago
Omfg yes. Im only scheduled 5.75 hr shifts. Its bloody annoying
Canadiansbux 3 points 1y ago
Tired of 9hr shift with no break because the close has a headache 😪
BothWeb1004 1 points 1y ago
Super illegal. Do you work at a licensed or corporate?
kysterrgreenbean 2 points 1y ago
i work 5.5 hours to and i stay overtime most of the time and i’m lucky to get an extra 5
getlostgetfound 1 points 1y ago
Wait…so I’ve been working 6 hours shifts and only getting 2 tens. I was told anything over 6 hours and you get a lunch?? What’s the truth cause I thought it was 6 hours
Butter-bean0729 1 points 1y ago
I’m tired of only getting 20hrs a week, when I applied I told the SM that I needed at least 30 and that has yet to happen. It’s impossible to live off of 20hrs a week in my state, but I stay bc of the health insurance.
YorkTownBratty 1 points 1y ago
I hate it too. I would much rather have 30 minutes unpaid that that I can have an actual break.
Canadiansbux 1 points 1y ago
I could put up a sign saying back at ____., but last time I did that came back to a line up of 10 and ended up being behind the rest of the night.
TheFriendlyFeminist 1 points 1y ago
Same, I hate those shifts. Would always rather have a lunch. I think you need time to mentally decompress!
sero5074 1 points 1y ago
I just started last week and this week is entirely 5.75 shifts. I personally like it but yeah I agree, the 30 minute would be nice to decompress, read, smoke break, eat a little something, and go to the bathroom completely uninterrupted and not thinking about work at all! If you want that 6 hour shift, definitely advocate for yourself and you will get what you want/deserve!
paladin-miraak 1 points 1y ago
Same, yesterday was my first shift with a lunch and I’ve worked here for about a month and a half lol
