Are trainers supposed to “coach”? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SavannaHeat
So I’ve been working for almost three months now and I’m doing well. I was lucky enough to be trained well, to have decent amount of time, and to get to work on all aspects of being a barista. As a result, I’ve turned out to be a well rounded barista and I’m thankful for my SM, the multiple trainers I’ve worked with, and all of my SSV’s.

With that being said, I have a partner who wasn’t my trainer but is someone who trains someone else. Every chance she gets, she’s pausing whatever she’s doing to come into my personal space and peak over my shoulder to see if I’m doing something wrong. 95% of the time I don’t need her help or her corrections. She’ll say something like “don’t forget to…____” and I’ll say, “thanks, I know.” Or she’ll automatically assume I’m doing something wrong when in fact I’m not, and then instead of acknowledging she was wrong, she just leaves it and goes on with what she’s doing. There’s many moments in addition to these, where she’ll talk to me like she’s my superior. My superiors don’t even talk to me like this. She’ll rudely tell me to go on my ten or my half, or to unassign, or to clock out. Like…. At this point, I’ve tried respectfully telling her to stop but she won’t. I don’t think she means any real harm so I don’t think reporting her to my SM is necessary, but I would like to hear your opinions on this.

Is she supposed to be coaching me and telling me what to do? I’ve come so close to passive aggressively telling her “congrats on your promotion” since she thinks she can talk to me like she’s my SSV or SM.

Yes barista trainers are supposed fo coach. However, it seems like your coworker isn’t necessarily coaching and more nitpicking and being condescending. It’s best to talk to the person themselves, I know that’s really hard but I’d give it a go! Just have a quick conversation with them and if you need to after that, then I would have a chat with your SM.

For how long am I to be coached? I do not mind corrections or help, I’ll accept it from any and everyone I work with, even people hired after me. I just do not like that I’m constantly being watched for bad things by literally this one person. The other trainers will give corrections or suggestions too, but in a way that makes me feel equal to them. And they definitely don’t boss me around. Neither do any of my SSV’s or my SM, they’re all great. I do not feel comfortable being nitpicked or talked to like I’m less than or incompetent. I will try professionally pulling her aside and talking to her again. Thank you for your response.

Oh wait I just saw in your post you already tried talking to her. At this point, I would just bring it up to your SM! Also as for how long you’re gonna be coached? As long as you’re at Starbucks you’ll be coached. There is always stuff to learn, and we all make mistakes. So you’ll always be coached. Everyone kinda coaches each other! I was an SSV for 3.5 years and up until my last day I was still being coached! Sometimes even by other baristas.

Trainers do coach but need to be self-aware at the same time. Not all coaching methods come across properly and it sounds like you feel it’s rude to you ( and understandably so you are valid and it sounds like she’s going over the top by a lot tbh. She’s not your boss. She isn’t the SSV and needs to understand that.

I’d connect with the SM or even try talking to her first. Talking to SM didn’t mean “reporting” necessarily. Sometimes people need to be “put in Their place” so to speak.
