Finished my barista basics today. I’m overwhelmed. Pretty sure I already forgot all that I learned. Tips on remembering number of espresso shots for each type of drink? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hot lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, and macchiatos are 1/1/2/2

Iced lattes, mochas, and macchiatos are 1/2/3 (smallest being a tall)

All americanos are 1/2/3/4 (2/3/4 for iced because there’s no short cold cup)

If that confuses you the numbers go from smallest to largest in size. So for a hot latte, it’s 1 shot for a short, 1 shot for a tall, 2 shots for a grande, and 2 shots for a venti; it’s the same for iced lattes except venti iced lattes get 3 shots instead of 2.

And if all that seems confusing, well, you’ll get the hang of it. I’ve worked at Starbucks for a year and in an easygoing environment where bar practice time was often offered (this is post-transfer because my old store sucked at training) I got everything down in less than a month. I know all the recipes and numbers and ratios and all that seem terrifying—they were to me too—but it’ll all become second nature much faster than you think.

You’ll be just fine. Trust me.

Hey that’s okay! I’m a barista trainer and it IS OVERWHELMING! You’re doing fine, the fact that you’re seeking help is incredible! Listen, just remember everything starts with a latte! People won’t be upset if you ask questions, and don’t be afraid to ask! But most importantly, it’s just coffee. You’ll be fine!

It’s all practice. The more you do it the more it’ll stick.

Hey! you should have been given a learning journal where there are two pages dedicated to all of the numbers of any product going on the drink. you are able to have this on you and you can use it during training and afterward as a refresher.
