Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Told my manager I need to lower my hours because 25 was too much with school, now I am scheduled for 24.75…. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by omgtee
Edit: yeah I did a form three weeks ahead and all that.
I just thought it was a funny misunderstanding. Hopefully the next weeks schedule will be better 😂

Did you change your availability? Verbal friendly accommodations from managers are nice, but changing your availability is the only thing you should rely upon.

That doesn't sound like reduced hours, that just sounds like the same schedule slightly changed. Managers forget stuff just like everyone else, so if you change your availability it is something that can't be overlooked/forgotten.

My managers just stomped all over my availability 💀💀💀
pervasivebarrier 17 points 1y ago
At some point y’all need to put your foot down
HotDogClouds 1 points 1y ago
Unless you have enough people to unionize, all you can do is quit. In that place, there is no foot for us to put down. You get a serious tone? You get penalized for aggressive behavior towards the manager. A coworker physically assaults you because they got mad about something? Not a single shit given.

>You get penalized for aggressive behavior towards your manager

This isn’t a real thing. What’re they gonna do? Write you up? A fake punishment that does nothing except assuage their bruised ego.

>A coworker physically assaults you

If your manager is truly too spineless and cowardly to do anything about this, you can certainly take something as serious as that higher up than just your store manger, maybe even the police if you believe in that type of thing

Yeah I did it I’m going to talk to them in person because maybe they didn’t read the form right

I mean they probably had the schedule mapped out with you having those hours. I’d wait and see if they’re not lower on the schedule after that.
lewabwee 8 points 1y ago
It wouldn’t even hurt to remind them if you haven’t already been reminding them but yeah for this reason I wouldn’t assume the worst. I’ve seen this sort of thing happen a few times.
rio8envy7 3 points 1y ago
I’ve had this happen with my hours. I agree it wouldn’t hurt to remind them and be like “hey I just wanted to remind you that I can’t work 25 hours anymore because of school. If there’s an issue maybe we can sit down and discuss what would work for both of us.”
omgtee [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Our store is on reduced hours rn too 😭 but yeah I have a heads up and all that stuff
kittykattt3 12 points 1y ago
Im sorry but I literally cackled 😅 but seriously though, that’s petty…like wowza
IcePhoenix96 3 points 1y ago
Ask again, and then change your availability bc it greys your name out in the system and it would be harder for them to schedule you. But if you need less hours you'll have to have less availability if they wont be polite about it
Malevolent_barnacle 3 points 1y ago
Assume positive intent. Mgrs are people too, I know mine forgets stuff all the time. We as a store know sticky notes work best, so that's the system we use. It's not unlikely that they forgot, or were not able to make it happen on this one (schedules supposed to be forecast way out in advance)
omgtee [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Ik I just thought it was funny, definitely a misunderstanding somewhere
eagle6705 2 points 1y ago
He understood the assignment lmao...

seriously. when i worked he would tell all college students to give availability when you are willing to work and he worked around it

It’s possible they misunderstood and meant that you could only work UP TO 25 hours, not “less than 25” which you should be more specific
omgtee [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I talked it out with them and the schedule was redone, they just forgot
lea-oppalove 1 points 1y ago
Its the "well, that's what they asked for" for me 🌚

They should be more accommodating but instead they're not willing to be flexible with you like they should. I hope it gets better going forward 😔
SisterAndromeda2007 0 points 1y ago
Them then exactly what you need. Don't compromise. That's there job.
stealingsight -1 points 1y ago
that's....not funny at all. your SM disrespected you. it's not gonna change unless you are more vocal about it lol
NOTcreative- -1 points 1y ago
Did you fill out an availability form? Did you tell them specifically how many hours you could work? Did you give them a heads up at least 3 weeks out for change in availability ? Managers have a lot to balance.
omgtee [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yes yes yes yes yed
NOTcreative- 3 points 1y ago
Did you follow up with your manager after the schedule your new availability was supposed to kick in to see what’s going on? Just trying to support you to get the work life balance you need. Understand also availability requests are still requests. Doesn’t necessarily mean they have to accommodate it but a good manager will try.
