I know a lot of us baristas wear docs and I’m just wondering how you guys clean them or if you even do. I’ve tried to keep mine in good shape but I’m not doing so hot on the account of I’m always running into the fridges

They’re doing their job by protecting your feet!

yeah mine are destroyed from the fridge doors! they’re so comfy though i still wear them, they’re my work docs lol
moonsickangel24 points1y ago
My first pair got wrecked by the fridge doors constantly scraping them so watch out for that!

A lot of baristas wear the pascal ones but I *personally* think the patent leather ones are easier to wipe off. I just wipe them off before each shift but I think the fridge scrapes are inevitable):

A good wipe down when they get syrup and crap on them and about once a week a quick hit of dubbin to keep the leather moisturized and looking good. That’s about it. I pretty much only wear Docs, but I have one specific pair that’s for work so I don’t get bent out of shape if something happens to them :)

I never bothered to take care of them, they were work boots that got mocha, milk, all kinds of crud on them, scuffs like crazy, etc.
I would put those cedar things in them, otherwise, they'd get funky, especially in the summer.

i have the protectant and i also use an old cleaning toothbrush on the soles to get the fruit inclusions out 🤢 other than that there isnt much u can do, but i kind of like the busted look. it makes them look lived in.

I like the wear tbh it shows Im working you know. I usually just wipe them off if I get syrup in them and stuff

I regularly wipe off the syrup and stuff, and I replace my squishy insoles every few months. Also I wash the shoelaces in a mesh laundry bag. Makes a world of difference.

after every shift i wipe down the surface with a cloth warm water to get rid of syrup or any other junk. if theres a particularly stubborn spot, i scrub it with saddle soap and a toothbrush. once a month i do a deep clean and condition! remove the insoles and laces, swish them around in hot water and dish detergent, then scrub the insoles with a toothbrush or stiff bristle brush. cleaning the laces isnt that important, but i hate how grimy they look lol. i use bickmore 1, bickmore 4, and dubbin to clean the boots surface. even though it can be a hassle, its definitely worth it!

the sanitizer wipes work great on them! but yeah, the fridges will kill them lol.
cafeaulattee3 points1y ago
I got fake docs instead of using my real ones lol
CoffeeChesirecat1 points1y ago
Yeah, same. I go through about a pair every year, maybe less, while my real docs stay clean.
reginaldioz3 points1y ago
i don’t

I didn’t take the best care of them for a while so they’re not in great condition. I recommend getting steel toed docs if you’re looking for a new pair bc I’ve absolutely destroyed the toes on mine. Expect them to get super creased and destroyed considering how labor intense this job is but do what I didn’t do and keep up with it with doc martens care supplies regularly if you want them to look nicer for longer. At the end of the day though you gotta accept defeat and embrace how tattered they’re gonna look lol - that can be a good look though!
