I literally hate that word.
It sounds so gross because I’m thinking it’s spelled undertoe, somehow related to 🐪toe.
croissantboyy 27 points 1y ago
it's more named after the undertow like in the ocean
alanameowmeow -7 points 1y ago
It’s still not ok
croissantboyy 5 points 1y ago
okay?
FfierceLaw 22 points 1y ago
I double dare you to say, “Was that a Camel Toe?” next time a customer orders an Under Tow

Yes!!

I’m a former partner and hate the awkward convo if the partner on register is a green bean or not a coffee drinker. It makes me feel bad like I’m not trying to do some weird TikTok drink or trick you! I’m ordering an uncommon but still in existence thing! I promise!
drinkliquidclocks 13 points 1y ago
It's not on the menu, how is that any different from any other secret menu drink? Pretty complicated to explain, too...
star_pants 7 points 1y ago
It's kind of like an old partner drink. A few years ago I could go to any store in my district and pretty much everyone knew it. A smoother way to get shots down quickly when opening
hecaete47 2 points 1y ago
Every partner at my store that had been there longer than me knew how to make it! I kinda assumed it was something eventually taught to all partners since they thought I was crazy for not already knowing how to make one lol. So then I kinda assumed other stores were all privy to its magic as well. It’s also not that complicated to explain once you’re used to it! “Do x pumps of vanilla, add a dash of cold cream, then put a spoon face-down in the cup & pour y amount of shots over the spoon so the shots sit on top”.
It_is_Katy 8 points 1y ago
okay, green bean here lmao, what's an undertow?
oddishmaster 9 points 1y ago
half and half sweetened with vanilla, with the espresso shots on top. you have to stand there with the spoon just over the milk so that the hot espresso sits on top of the cold milk. it’s delicious, try it! no ice, it’s kinda like a shot but dressed up
000ness000 2 points 1y ago
whats the ratio of half and half to espresso? i wanna try this tmr morning haha
oddishmaster 3 points 1y ago
umm not exactly sure, I usually fill a short cup about halfway, 1-2 pumps of vanilla:)
bootrick 3 points 1y ago
God yes! Not just the register but the partner on bar too.

I asked the girl on dto if she knew an undertow. She said yes! So I said I'd like an unsweet undertow and she paused and said she didn't know how to ring it in. I ordered it as a "doppio espresso with a light splash of heavy cream, upside down."

That makes sense right? Well it didn't make any sense to the poor girl on bar who made me a short breve espresso machiato, HOT!

I handed it back saying that it should be just an ounce of cold heavy cream with shots on top. The second time I got the drink, I just assumed it was correct and started driving off. Two seconds later I realize it's WAY too heavy and take off the top to see a full fucking short cup.

God! I felt like I was being a goddamned Karen, but I went in the store to say that it was still not correct....

I felt like I had become that which I hated but I just wanted an undertow!
FfierceLaw 18 points 1y ago
You are a Karen, coming in and expecting partners to know an off-menu beverage just for you! I don’t care if it’s a coffee house classic, it’s not on the menu!
star_pants 5 points 1y ago
Dude, she asked if they knew what it was and they said yes just that they didn't know how to ring it in. The bar partner was the one confused and at that point there should have been better communication, especially for the remake (that she did clarify further for).
FfierceLaw 2 points 1y ago
If I was that bar partner I would be like 😑. Afaic if something is not even on the menu and there’s no company standard, how can you make it wrong?
noone7483993 27 points 1y ago
i do a single with lite cream and write in undertow
ok_sure_iguess 16 points 1y ago
My SM says they get vanilla too?
noone7483993 8 points 1y ago
YES!! I totally forgot
sailorgrumpycat 16 points 1y ago
I like making them because it makes me think of the album of the same name by Tool.
bucksfan2009 6 points 1y ago
Came here to say exactly this. I always sing the main line in the song when the shots pour.
LilacFlores 10 points 1y ago
What is this?
lisarista 45 points 1y ago
Not even really a drink. It’s just a pump of vanilla and a little cream, with shots of espresso pulled over the back of a spoon so it cascades slowly on top. It’s supposed to go down hot and then finish cold and sweet. It’s literally not an official drink though, and I would not expect us to make them unless the customer knows what they want, or some barista knows how it’s made.
ok_sure_iguess 14 points 1y ago
Essentially cold cream and vanilla, with espresso shots poured over the back of a spoon. There are no standards to this drink at all, so it's made differently by each person.
kortette 9 points 1y ago
Undertow? Breve bomb? We call it a John Wayne! I don’t know why.
ThankfulWonderful 3 points 1y ago
My first SM called it a “cow shot” hahah
GinaMohundro 1 points 1y ago
John Wayne here too lol
bootrick 1 points 1y ago
Ha! I had a customer call it that once.
clumsycalico 6 points 1y ago
Wait I have only ever called this a breve bomb???
Coffeeaftersex 6 points 1y ago
Haha that's adorable, it sounds way better than undertow.
bootrick 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, but I always made them with heavy cream instead of breve.
Jessicap1400 5 points 1y ago
at my store in texas these are a called a john wayne lol
FfierceLaw 4 points 1y ago
As long as it’s not on the menu or in training, unless there’s someone on the floor that knows what the customer is talking about, they’re out of luck. Or if the customer can instruct, but when we do that there is usually a menu item that it is based on. Go to a cafe that has it on the menu. Otherwise you may as well order a “My Aunt Fanny”
jazzysoranio 9 points 1y ago
Yeah, I just started pretending I don’t know what it is. If you know what you want you can describe it to me. Otherwise, I’m not guessing. I’m just so tired of these secret menu drinks, we already have more than enough recipes to memorize, the least you can do is know what you want if you’re gonna ask for some secret thing. It’s like going to a new store where no one has ever met you before and asking for your “usual” and then not being able to even tell them what your usual is.
thechamelioncircuit 1 points 1y ago
A John Wayne is 3 or more shots in a coffee at my store
No_Introduction8689 1 points 1y ago
wait what is this
clumsycalico 1 points 1y ago
Wait I have only ever heard this called a breve bomb???
