Double blended americano? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by virgofilm
I wasnt making this drink, but I overheard a woman (who looked ripped AF) order a double blended americano. It’s only my second week at starbucks so I don’t know that much about drinks but even I questioned what a double blended americano was, but my coworker was the one who made it. I heard my coworker ask another coworker if she should put base in it to blend and the other coworker said yes since it was getting blended.

Well, moments later this woman storms back into the store asking if someone put syrup in her drink. My coworker who made it said yes and this woman start screaming/sobbing about how she can’t have any sugar or syrup because she had a body-building show in 2 days. She demanded to see the bottle so she could take a picture of it (?) and just kept yelling at my coworker for putting syrup into a drink when she did not ask for it. Like I understand the importance of watching what you put into your body especially as a body builder but this woman fr had one singular sip. Was my coworker in the wrong? What exactly would be the point of double blending an americano if it didn’t have the base in it? Like I said, I don’t know the most about drinks so does double blending an americano like…do anything?

when people ask for off-menu items, in any capacity, they need to be specific. it's not anybody's fault, necessarily, but i wouldn't be too upset about it. no one did it on purpose and it wasn't an allergy or anything, so no harm done really. if it was really just one sip i'm sure it didn't affect her show.

While I agree with this, I would say the customer probably wouldn’t expect us to put a frap base in there, so I feel like she couldn’t have been more specific…

i personally usually ask when people ask for stupid things like blended cold brews, to let them know that the texture will be god-awful if it's done without base. but i think it makes sense for a barista to put base in a blended beverage if it's an odd/unprecedented request. if the customer was going to be upset she could have politely asked the barista to walk her through what she was doing (once, a customer didnt know what a latte was, and i had no problem walking her through the steps while i made her iced white mocha. it was no problem bc she was polite.). half the time customers dont even know what's in items ON the menu (i.e. whip on the mochas and white mochas. cant tell you how many people get mad at me for making the drink as it's specified on our menu.). my point is, if youre making an odd or off menu request, you should be prepared to communicate with the baristas, and not be a karen when it comes out differently than expected.

I would say to never add things like that in a drink without asking. I always make it as the ticket reads to prevent situations like this. While it may not have been a very big deal here, it could be a big deal for someone diabetic if you had put a syrup in a drink without telling them and that person doesn’t calculate it into their medication dosing. I always say better safe than sorry.

Double blending is gonna crush up the ice, which I assume is what she wanted? But it's also gonna be chunky and gross-textured and separate almost immediately, which is what the base prevents.

HOWEVER, that said... never put frap base into a drink unless the customer asks for it. One because of stuff like this (standard wouldn't have it, so there's no reason a customer would feel the need to ask for "no base", it would be like asking for no whipped cream on an iced coffee), and two because it's using stock that isn't being accounted for. (A customer who DID want the base in a blended americano... probably ring it as an espresso frap, no frap roast, sub espresso, no milk, add water?)

(This isn't to say the customer's reaction was warranted; it was absolutely an overreaction to yell at your coworker for a mistake/miscommunication! But just a "for future reference" type thing)

No yeah that totally makes sense. As a lil green bean, I probably would’ve made the drink without base and just done exactly as the sticker said, but I understand why my coworker thought differently. But if I’m ever placed into a situation like this, now I know lol.

I would not have put base in it personally then it would be a type of frapp not an americano. They say 'double blended' because there is no 'blended' button. But, I would say no your coworker is not wrong, there was not really a right answer there.

No they weren’t, that drink wouldn’t have blended properly

whenever anyone orders things like a blended iced coffee , i never add the coffee base bc i don’t want them to get mad. but also it’s really gross and chunky without it
