So I’ve been working less than a month but recently my hands have been so dry they’re starting to crack. Has anyone else had this problem? And does anyone have any tips/best remedies for this?

Stay up on moisturizer for your hands. And they smell better!
szn2episode3 [OP]4 points1y ago
do you know a specific kind that works best?

O’keefe’s Working Hands. Especially at night with a pair of clean gloves or socks over them while I sleep.

ooooo great thank you!!!!

I second the o'keefes and gloves! You can also try, when drying your hands off after washing, pat them dry with the paper towels instead of wiping. The friction from wiping dries out your skin more than patting, or something like that 🤷

Thanks for posting this! I'm also new and suffering the same issues. I'll give this a try!

I like Cetaphil. I have eczema pretty bad (on back of my thighs, inner elbows, nose, hands, you pick an awkward spot and I probably have it there). I have to stay moisturized or I will break out, especially while doing dishes. It is fragrance free and keeps everything very moisturized.

Yes, I get eczema and my hands are so dry/cracked/wrinkled. I'm 26 but my hands look like they're older. Please, for the love of god, stop sticking your bare hands in the sanitizer. I've been working in food service for over 5 years and I'm convinced it has completely destroyed my hands. For the past year I've been wearing gloves every single time I'm going to wipe down anything. Yes it's annoying, but at least my hands don't crack and bleed as much. I'm very lucky too because once I started doing that, everybody started asking me why I was wearing gloves, all I had to do was show them my hands and now my shift leads try to not make me do dishes if they can help it and most other baristas will wipe down the counters for me. Although I never ask them to.
Daily I use either Gold Bond eczema relief, or O'Keefe's working hands hand cream. If I don't put on some kind of cream/lotion after I shower, my hands will be so dry I literally cannot stretch my fingers out all the way without my skin feeling like it's going to rip. Please please please, wear gloves when handling sanitizer, wear gloves when washing dishes. A few annoying moments of putting on gloves will save your hands for the rest of your life. This job is not worth destroying your hands over. I swear, my hands will never be the same.

I be dunking my hands in the sanitizer 😭
Red_Sweet_Tart2 points1y ago
Everyone does, and I used to do it because everyone does. Just start wearing gloves and you'll see an improvement :)

Dream cream from lush . The only thing that has helped me. 18 year partner here and I used to cry cause my hands would get so dry and cracked. The hand soap we have is brutal on the skin too, I bring my own and it helps .

thank you!!! i’ll try some out

So are we going to start a class action law suit against Kay 5 for the chemical burns, horrible hang nails, and fragile/brittle nails we receive from using this chemical after crafting every single hot drink or are we just gonna keep trying to find ways to lube up our hands just enough to where they don’t sting ?

I just wanted to post a "thank you" for asking this because I've been having the same issues and the tips from other users here are very insightful!
szn2episode3 [OP]1 points1y ago
of course!!

A good cheap moisturizer is working hands. It’s saved my knuckles after being so dry they were cracked and bleeding.

Hand balms or frequent use of lubriderm does the trick for me!!

Definitely get some good moisturizer! I personally use a goat milk based hand cream before I go to bed and in the mornings. It doesn't make my hands greasy and soothes any irritation. Hope you find what works best for you!
quartjarz2 points1y ago
use a moisturizing hand sanitizer if you can! I got some little ones from Walgreens that I keep in my pocket with my pens 😎

smart!

I don't wash the backs of my hands at work and I put lotion on them after work and before bed. I was also gifted some moisturizing gloves from a coworker for Secret Santa for this very reason and this was before the pandemic and the mandatory hand washes every thirty minutes!

I moisture my hands at night and wear a pair of gloves. It helps so much with the moisture! They’re soft, and best part, not dry when you wake up

Baby I understand I deal w this all year. But just WAIT for the colder months. It gets so so so much worse.

Great🥲

It’s recommended that you moisture your hands every time you wash them. Constantly moisturizing with water based moisturizers might eventually “burn” your hands so you’ll want to use a non-water based moisturizer too. Aquaphor is my go to.
Moisturizing with either water or oil based moisturizers works best when you apply the moisturizer on top of wet hands. This is because moisturizers can do some work on their own but they’re primarily designed to bind water to your skin to help absorption and retention.
