Should I explain my feelings to my manager?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by RexFlex420
Today i was bar with another partner. We were working on drinks and having a conversation. During the conversation, my fellow partner casually swore. My ASM overheard it (she was on her computer in the cafe) and scolds the two of us harshly, "No more swearing from either of you, I mean it! Next time, it's corrective action!" and stormed off.
I feel upset because I got scolded (low key threatened imo) and I wasn't even talking. Not to mention that our cafe is closed and we weren't talking over the headsets, so there was no wayca customers could hear us.
Im asking if i should contact her on the fact that i wasn't swearing/talking. At the time, i just got quiet, apologized frantically, and tried to let it go but am now feeling frustrated. I don't want to risk getting in trouble, tho

Your asm needs to chill out. If she heard what we said over the headsets, she’d probably write all of us up. This job is too stressful to care that much about.

Honestly, it's the same at my store lol. She's never on the floor though, always just on her computer in the cafe

I can’t stand that.
I wouldn’t think too much of it. It sounds like she just has a stick up her ass.

That's what the shift on duty said (more or less lol)

ASM’s can either be the best or the freaking worst. I wouldn’t bring it up. You didn’t do anything wrong.

Oooo the temptation to reply "fuckin do it"

Honestly, but my bank account wouldn't be happy lol

I know some stores are more strict than others on swearing but at my store the general policy is no swearing around SM or customers, and avoid swearing TOO much. As a half joke/half way to protect ourselves we come up with alternate words. Most of which one of my ssv's use with her kids and now just transfer over to work xD

My favorite is we use "dodo" instead of something like dumbass. It gives a good laugh when one of us does something stupid and we get to tell them not to be a dodo

Honestly this sounds like a build a bridge over what happened and move on situation. I get needing to watch the language because kids are impressionable and it’s not professional. I get that there wasn’t anyone in the cafe but if there was someone at the window they may have heard. Customers can only hear when we talk outside via headsets not when we talk to each other. You will be fine as long as you keep the cursing on the floor to a minimum. In the back it’s not as big a deal but on the floor it’s a matter of professionalism.

Swearing on the floor can get you fired on the spot; it happened at my store twice. I’ve just started saying like “fudge” and “darn” instead of swearing as we can’t even swear in the back.

Honestly, nah. I told my shift (as our floors were being mopped) that if I busted my ass, I’m going home. I ended up throwing a rag on that and using it for traction. Rushes + wet floors = a bad situation. But honestly that’s not as bad as what my coworker said to a customer about the SFW (Called it Fetty WAP and that her order totaled 17.38…) (note we were all dying and the girl didn’t understand the joke…)

You can always talk to a supervisor you trust or get along with, or is at least less intimidating than your ASM lol. As a shift I feel like we're a good in between, we know the standards and we follow them but we also know when to just chill out. I have a lot of fun with my team on the floor, and it often feels like we are more productive because of it. Let a supervisor know what happened, and they'll have your back! Whether you want to bring it up with your ASM or just have someone aware in case it happens again.

I also vented to another supervisor about it. Later on the same day.

A shift supervisor was there when it happened, he was very supportive and explained that she probably was in a bad mood already because she left without saying goodbye to the team right afterwards.
